This video is beyond bizarre, but that won’t stop us from finding all Selena symbolism it has to offer…
The video for “Call Out My Name” starts off with The Weeknd walking alone along a dark, deserted street, and the moment his mouth opens to sing the chorus, bats come flying out of it.
Bats tend to symbolize death and rebirth, so perhaps this is showing the “death” of his relationship with Selena?
Shortly after, The Weeknd sings in front of a blank screen in an empty movie theatre. The screen then shows a scene of a desert, which The Weeknd enters into from the theatre stage. Suddenly, he is walking through a barren and dare I say, broken looking place.
So this might represent the part of the song where The Weeknd sings QUOTE, “We found each other / I helped you out of a broken place”.
Later in the desert scene, a super creepy looking white bird-woman hybrid appears on the ground next to The Weeknd, and many fans think THIS figure actually represents Selena, herself.
Later, she appears again, only this time she’s sitting on a tree looking much more defiant than in the previous scene.
One KZbinr’s theory on this figure is pretty compelling, as they explained QUOTE, “‘The Birds' by Weeknd featured him as a bird cause he broke girls hearts, but now a girl is the bird cause she's the one breaking his heart.”
It seems pretty obvious from the lyrics that Selena really broke his heart, so that’s a fan theory we’re putting our stamp of approval on.
The bird-woman appears again at the end of the video, as the camera zooms in on her standing on the balcony of an indistinct apartment building.
Maybe that represents Selena leaving the “broken” place where she and The Weeknd “found each other” -- symbolized by the desert -- to opt for the more “basic” comforts of a boring old apartment building -- which could represent Selena leaving The Weeknd for her ex, Justin Bieber?! Guys I know it’s crazy but I could do this all day.
While all of the symbolism in the video is pretty vague and abstract, the lyrics to the song itself are a lot more clear. At one point, The Weeknd sings QUOTE, “I put you on top / I claimed you so proud and openly”, and we all know how much The Weeknd loved to show off his love for SelGo on social media.
Another clue that the song is about Selena comes from the fact that he MAY have referenced her kidney transplant. He sings QUOTE, “I said I didn’t feel nothing, baby, but I lied / I almost cut a piece of myself for your life.” Many fans speculated that The Weeknd was implying that he at one point offered to donate HIS kidney to Selena.
And of course, there’s that cutting line where The Weeknd disses the subject of the song, singing QUOTE, “Guess I was just another pit stop / 'Til you made up your mind”. You KNOW that line has to be about Justin.
