They didn’t explain much details about what happened 10 years ago when he played as an amateur at Masters so allow me to share this story for those of you who don’t know. It was only a month after the tragedy of earthquake/tsunami hitting northern part of Japan. Hideki, as a student going to college there, wasn’t sure if he should participate in Masters leaving the people under such distraught circumstances. His life was also not back to normal, only eating cup noodles everyday and losing weights. Finding out his hesitation, people in Sendai had started sending him letters with encouragement to participate in Masters and go after his dream and not worry about them. They also told him watching him pursue his dream would give them hope and courage they need to strive for the future. They say the letters amounted to be about 4-inch thick. With that, he decided to play at Masters for those people who pushed his back, so he wore the shirt with 🇯🇵 embroidered and brought all of the letters to Augusta National. The result was the top finish as an amateur. He responded to their voices and their hopes with his clubs. Many people had lost houses so they watched him play at the shelter or even in a car. This year was the 10-year anniversary of 3-11 in Tohoku. That’s why it was even more meaningful for the people in Tohoku area and for Hidemi to win at this time. He said he was able to change (step up as a golfer) because of those people pushing his back to get there 10 years ago. Anyway, thank you for reading this much if you are still reading it.😅 Also, thank you so much for all of those kind, heartfelt comments towards him and Japan🇯🇵. While Asian hate exists, it’s so nice that we can all take a break from those non-sense on the golf course. You guys rock!!!😘❤️💕 Also, Japan thank you for your support you have shown us towards 3-11 tragedy. 🥰 Wishing you all the best and happiness from a Japanese golf fan.🇯🇵💕❤️🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

Tekmateak mate come on, he was an underdog. He was definitely not a favourite. I think he was paying @$56 to take it out before the tournament began. No japanese man had ever won a major and this guy had been out there for 10 years. Not many saw this coming and you can’t sit here and say he wasn’t an underdog.
@jl86983 жыл бұрын
I wouldnt say he was a favourite to win, but I also wouldnt call him an underdog. Yeah he hasnt won in 4 years, but hes shot 61 at firestone on a sunday, tied sawgrass record of 63 before tourny was called out last year. I've been following his career since his low am, and hes been one of my favourite players, so maybe thats why i think this way.

3 bogeys out of the last 4 holes. Matsuyama was doing his best to choke the tournament away. That's what frickin' intense pressure can do to a player. Fortunately he played great the first three rounds and built up a nice big lead to have a bit of cushion for when the 'chokies' took hold.

My first PGA tournament I went to, I wanted to follow a Japanese golfer. Because they have great swings. I sat around until the first one came along "Hideki Matsuyami"! and I followed him for 18 holes. Seeing him drive was just something else. His drive is out of this world organized, mechanical, just a piece of beauty. At the end of the day I thought "Well that was fun and educational. But this guy probably won't ever win anything."

This was great to see and huge for Japanese golf. The pressure alone of trying to win a Masters on Sunday is massive and then add in carrying the weight of an entire country pulling for their guy to do something no other Japanese man has ever done is just crazy. Really handled that like a champion and even held it together after some missteps on the back 9 where it got really close with Xander pushing. Congrats to Hideki on a much deserved win!
