During the Horus Heresy, there was a rebellious planet known as Istvaan III. At this point, Horus was fully turned traitor, along with his brothers, but the plan hadn’t gone into motion yet. There were also several Astartes among the soon to be traitor legions that were appalled by the proposal, and showed their disapproval of potentially betraying the Emperor. So when the Luna Wolves/Sons of Horus, Death Guard, Emperor’s Children, and World Eaters landed to conquer the planet, the Traitors opened fire on their Loyalist brothers, and the first battle of the Horus Heresy had begun. However, the battle was short lived. When he saw he couldn’t take care of the Loyalists quickly enough, Horus ordered the virus bombing of the planet, annihilating all ground forces on the ground, both Traitor and Loyalist. Nathaniel Garro, battle-captain of the Death Guard’s 7th Great Company, managed to escape the massacre aboard the frigate Einstein alongside 70 of his Loyalist brothers, who would become known as, funnily enough, The Seventy. They retreated to Terra to warn the Emperor that Horus had turned Traitor. Without his escape, the Heresy may have gone unnoticed for who knows how long, and the Imperium would’ve been caught completely off guard. When he got to the Sol system, he was brought to Luna(the moon) to see if he was truthful or not. When it was confirmed he was, Malcador the Sigilite, the most power unaugmented human psyker to ever exist and advisor to the Emperor, summoned him and several other members of The Seventy. With other marines, they would become the founding members of the Grey Knights, a secret Inquisitorial group of all-psyker Astartes that specialize in the battle against daemons and Chaos. Edit: I typed this out before reading the first trilogy. Apologies for any slight differences like the exact timeline of the virus bombing. People in the replies have pointed them out.
@americankid77822 жыл бұрын
My one nitpick is that the Virus Bombing happened before the land battle against the remaining loyalist forces. Someone got the word down to the Loyalist forces before the Shells were launched (can’t remember who) allowing for some to take shelter and provide a proper defense against the Tractors.

little nitpick by me: Horus "picked" marines personally from every chapter which seemed "loyal" and were sent for attack on Istvaan III (people not part of the "Lodges" mostly.) Then the bombings happened, but many survived thanks to Saul Tarvitz warning them (He should have originally gone to Istvaan but The venerable ancient dreadnought Rylanor switched with him since he suspected something) You are very correct about the Seventy and not at the same time. They were founding yes. But the original "grey Knights" would be the Space marines from ALL legions (yes also traitor) which Nathaniel Garro (Now Knight Errant, no longer Deathguard) found and brought to command of Malcador the Sigillite (first was tylos Rubio. I have always believed chapters have different attitudes about civilians based on how they interpret the order to 'safeguard the imperium' A chapter may assume that means to safeguard it's lore and relics, preserve its technology, fortify it's territory, remove the corruption of it's enemies etc. The salamanders are the kindest because they believe it is the imperium OF MAN- and so safeguarding the imperium is to safeguard the emperor's subjects.

Funfact: All Astartes can get as dark as the Salamanders to adapt to the radiation on battlefields. The Salamanders are just permanently as such.
@darkflame94102 жыл бұрын
Indeed. All Space Marines have an organ that converts harmful radiation into excess melanin (similar to how natural Melanin is created using radiation from sunlight), which causes Space Marines to "tan" in high-radioactive areas. The Salamanders have a genetic flaw which causes this organ to malfunction and never turn off, so they just continually build up the melanin over time until their skin is a charcoal black (although it seems salamnder successor chapters, being primaris, don't have this issue as much thanks to Kawl "tinkering" a bit, similar to how he stabilized Space Wolves geneseed). Nocturne being an extremely high-radiation world (the locals even had a similar genetic defect they evolved over millenium to be able to survive on the deathworld) speeds the proces up drastically (although most Salamander recruits come from nocturne anyways). Ironically the Raven Guard have the OPPOSITE problem, their organ functions too well, to the point it drains all melanin from their system, leaving them with the extremely pale, deathly skin.

Though if you spread out that number of marines as advisors, liaisons and bodyguards over the whole of imperial governing body...

For those wondering about the 2nd and 11th legions, we know very little about them, and for what we can only assume is good reason. Apparently, what they did was so absolutely bad and a danger to the Imperium, they were put down without mercy, and all mention and memory of their existence was thoroughly erased from the galaxy. Even the primarchs themselves mention them briefly and extraordinarily rarely in hushed whispers. The Emperor even had Malcador the Sigilite, the founder of the Inquisition and the most powerful human psyker in the galaxy, wipe their minds of what exactly happened to the two legions and their primarchs. However, there was one who was allowed to remember, only for a moment. When the Horus Heresy was in full swing and the Imperial Fists were preparing for the largest siege in history, surveyors of the surrounding area stumbled across the rooms of the two lost primarchs, which were moved from the Imperial Palace into the maze of towering spires that is Terra, and were instantly killed by the psychic wards surrounding them. Rogal Dorn confronted Malcador about still keeping secrets from him, but Malcador reveals Dorn wanted it that way. He just doesn’t remember. He even was in favor of letting the marines of the chapters spared, their minds wiped, sent to serve elsewhere since they were too great a resource. Malcador reveals it was Guilliman and Dorn himself who devised the plan to erase the memories of the primarchs. But Malcador lets him remember, if only for an instant, what happened and why. When the moment passes, Rogal obviously doesn’t remember. And yet, the feeling of the memory stays with him. “There was still much that the psyker had said and done which the Imperial Fist did not accept, and although Malcador had professed to have been truthful with him, Dorn had doubts that would never ebb. But not in this matter. In this, he was certain. The lost were gone, and it was well that they were. The grand misfortunes that befell them crumbled in Dorn's mind, but they left behind certainty. What came to pass could overshadow everything. Dorn knew that now. 'The raw, hateful truth is clear to me. If they were here with us now…This war would already have been lost.'” TL;DR The legions and their primarchs did things so unbelievably terrible, they were put down, and all memory of them was scrubbed from record, including the psychic mind wiping of the primarchs themselves.

In a recent interview Ricky Priestly (one of, if not THE, original writers of 40k for GW) said that his original idea behind the two lost legions - which GW has not kept - was that they indeed had committed some horrid atrocity; however their erasure from history was not a punishment but a reward - as so not to exist in a state of tarnished reputation like the traitor legions currently do. Priestly wrote the legions with the intention of them and their primarchs having redeemed themselves somehow, and were destroyed either as a mercy killing or a result of self sacrifice. Super interesting for theory crafting, but Priestley’s admission creates more questions than it answered. Still cool though!

As the saying goes "No army marches on an empty stomach.". The downside is that if he really is the Primarch of Bureaucracy and Administration like he's supposed to be, there goes the setting because that will make the Imperium be able to go on a proper crusade (and the only thing that stopped that was Horus and Big E's ego).

Some things that I'd like to be mentioned, but uderstand why they weren't: 1. The reason why Perturabo was so bitter was that he was essentially the Imperium's janitor during its expansion. Iron Warriors were given the worst tasks: heavy sieges, garrison duty, pacifications, all those thankless but necessary jobs. And they got zero respect for it. They were doing stuff other legions didn't want to do and did so flawlessly, only to be never thanked. Also, it's heavily hinted that Perturabo's true calling was architecture (and he was damn good at it) and he only wanted to be a builder, while he was saddled with grindest and most destructive warfare, only for Rogal Dorn (who was about as good in the gruntwork and architecture, but much more respected) to be given the task of building the Imperial Palace. Most other Primarchs disliked Perturabo (truth be told, he was quite moody and bitter after all that happened to him) and Horus was pretty much his only friend. Which was the other big reason for their betreyal. 2. Konrad Curze has a lot more to him than terror and warped moral core. When he landed on Nostromo, it was a criminal hellhole. After he grew up, he tried to clean this place up, which he did by killing most of crime lords and letting the rest know that they would behave OR ELSE. Then he was called by the Emperor to fight for Imperium. So he went. And when he came back, Nostromo was a criminal hellhole again, the surviving crime lords rebuilding their power without the boogeyman. So he snapped and murdered all of them, no exception. He also was known to have visions of the future and the terrible rotten corpse of a state that the Imperium would become. So he went even more mad. The story goes that when Imperial assasins found him after Horus Heresy, he told them to just get on with it and lterally allowed them to kill him. So big yikes. 3. Alpha Legion is... complicated. And that's why everybody loves them. They're so secretive and so good at espionage that even their own lore is considered to be partially manipulated by them. How much, no one knows. They're also not exactly heretical, as they've been seen fighting for both sides. The current fan consensus is that 1/4 of them is traitor and occasionally spy on Imperium, 1/4 is loyal and occasionally spy for Chaos, 1/4 is traitor but is really a deep-cover loyalist cell and 1/4 is loyal but is really a deep-cover traitor cell. The funny thing is no one knows which one is which, not even Alpha Legionnaries themselves. They're also masters at redundancy, every single marine trained in normal fighting, heavy weapon fighting, light weapon fighting, spying, scouting and commanding. In an Alpha Legion warband, every marine can do anything. That all together means that their tactics and strategies are a shell game within shell game within shell game, with multiple levels of secret plans feeding off each other, with long term goals so inscrutable that probably most of the legion don't know them. They're playing the "I know they know I know they know I know..." game on the level that is to Imperial counterespionage like 4d chess is to tic tac toe. What's not to love?

For those wondering about the lost legions: The emperor of mankind sanctioned them for an unknown reason, and decreed the edict of obliteration, which saw all traces of them aside from a rare few erased from history. At the very least Rogal Dorn and Rouboute Guilleman had their memories of the primarchs altered by malcador. It’s highly likely that all primarchs who came into contact with the lost legions had their memories altered in some way, whether they know about it or not. This makes all clues about their fate untrustworthy at best. As for what the primarchs did, it’s never explicitly mentioned but in order for the emperor to delete a primarch, whatever they did had to be HUGE, but not necessarily bad. If the lost legions truly were as dangerous as some theorize them to be, it would make more sense to delete all memory of them, so their existence, or lack thereof cannot sow doubt in the emperor. The fact that despite conflicting hints at what happened to the primarchs, all accounts share one thing in common: The lost primarchs were missed and their loss seen as tragic by all the other primarchs that reference them. Horus even confronts malcadore about destroying their statues. This leads me to believe that the fate of the lost primarchs was closer to a tragedy than a betrayal. Perhaps it wasn’t an action taken by the primarchs that lead to their sanction. Maybe the erasure of the lost primarchs was some measure of forgiveness or kindness. If they were to be remembered, it would only be in shame. If they were to be forgotten, so too is their failure. One theory suggests that one of the primarchs suffered a geneseed flaw that could not be tolerated. We know that each primarch has a unique fate so it’s likely this isn’t the case for both primarchs. Here’s my personal theories. 11th primarch- The 11th primarch has a severe geneseed flaw and is kept in the vaults below the imperial palace. This is hinted at in a custode codex, with a being known as “subject 11” is imprisoned in the dark cells. 2nd primarch- The second primarch had a more tragic fate than his brother, and likely committed suicide. While I’d never Shame someone for it, in the 40k universe, a primarch taking their own life is perhaps one of the most shameful things they could do, and would in fact threaten the stability of the crusade as malcadore told Horus before the force choked the shit out of him. Lmk y’all’s theories I wanna hear em

This reminds me of the 40k fanfic "Imperium Ascendant", where God E sends a psychic message to his past self, after chaos tried killing/corrupting the still gestating primarchs, only to be stopped by the legion of the damned. The aforementioned message boils down to: "Hello past me! Half of our sons betrayed us, and humanity worships me. Learn from my mistakes, lest you'll end up like me. Here are the profiles of every primarch from my timeline." These profiles included that of the 2nd and 11th primarchs. The 2nd ended upon a planet where humans coexisted with xenos. This lead to him becoming a good diplomat, but also guillible, which was less than favourable during the Rangdan Xenocide. The 11th, one the other hand, got stranded on a daemon-infested space hulk. This made him immune to chaos (iirc) at the expense of his sanity. During the great crusade, him and his sons became cannibalistic monsters, which lead to their execution.

The Iron Warriors are my favorite space marine legion because, in my opinion, they're the only faction who really GET it. And they got it right from the beginning. All the legions, Loyalist and Traitor, went into the Horus Heresy thinking that their war was going to be glorious, and their enemies would be washed away by their might. Not the Iron Warriors. I think the perfect explanation of the alpha legion is in a short story later in the Horus heresy where *spoiler* The alpha legion sends the alpha legion to attack their own spy installation to convince other parts of the alpha legion that it was attacked by a different legion. The campaign to attack the alpha legion base was lead by the primarch who, at the very end, when waiting on their shuttle out of the small exploding meteor, takes off their helmet and isn’t the primarch. The assault team dies during the mission to leave no evidence lead by a close friend of omegon who lied to the attacking squad about leaving alive. So even the leader of the squad lied to his own men as a promise to omegon so none would be able to say what happened there. That’s like 5 different double crosses. There is more to it. But go read it. If someone has the short story tell me. I can’t remember it but it’s great.

By the time you get to Perturabo's argument with his father he's a completely different person. As he mentions when asked why he doesn't build all these amazing buildings he's planned out, Perturabo replies with something along the lines of 'Why? I already know exactly how to make it and how it will be received.' Which to me says he's been corrupted by the Warp like Konrad. Plus if you know how everything you build will turn out and everyone's reactions, where's the enthusiasm to build it? Routine is monotonous and boring, especially if you're a Primarch who thrives on problem-solving.

I'm pretty sure the Raven Guard actually all have a bit of psychic power that makes everyone else's eyes just sort of glide over them. It doesn't work in a brightly lit room if they're in the center of it, but any kind of shadow or gloom just sort of takes them in and they become near unnoticeable. They also all have something like the Blood Angel's Black Rage, but instead it's either inconsolable depression or straight up disdain for every other chapter's tactics.

Which seems like a very imperial thing to do.

I feel like the best way to describe the Night Lords is the the legion went traitor while the primarch ultimately didn't. When he saw what had happened and he knew it had gone too far, he let himself be killed. There's a lot of nature vs nurture in the primarch's backgrounds, and I think Konrad is the most explicit.
@JimGordon Жыл бұрын
Konrad’s ideals left his legion because he had no diplomatic tools in his arsenal aside from fear due to his nature… this does not allow him to lead a legion of super soldiers that “know no fear” very well. He lacked the ability to teach or nurture. And due to his own shattered psyche, he was unaware of the evil that was taking hold of his legion. Meanwhile his sons could never learn his ideals because his sons only respected him but could never learn. I agree with you about nature and nurture
@Stolanis Жыл бұрын
@@JimGordon I believe that there was something binding together the earlier generations of the Night Lords more than just fear: a sense of justice. That might sound weird for the Night Lords, but given that Curze was a vigilante who succeeded in completely destroying the crime rate of his home planet, it's likely that his followers were just as zealous as him in that regard. They probably believed that all the horrible things they did in the name of the Emperor were still in the service of a higher cause. But of course, after Curze left his planet, without him there to keep crime down it shot back up again, so the later generations didn't have that sense of justice and it all fell apart from there.

They are generally morose about the whole ordeal. Typhus sold them out. >The Alpha Legion is arguably not even a Space Marine Legion anymore. They don't just use cultists extensively - they integrate unaugmented humans into the legion's command structure, to the point that it is entirely possible for a human legionnaire to outrank (and relay orders to) a space marine legionairre.
