Wrath of Khan is excellent indeed, one of the most underrated Sci-Fi films out there. Sad that both Star franchises in Trek and Wars are so mediocre and inconsistent today when they were both capable of incredible filmmaking.

Hi Sean. If you haven't seen it, you should check out the Director's Edition of "Star Trek The Motion Picture." It's edited to flow a lot better so the story moves faster and the effects are completed the way they'd meant to do, but ran out of time because of the deadline for screening.

I disagree with you on the jj ones. They take place in a different universe that is changed. I dont really see the point in judging the movies for making characters different when they are vey open with the fact that they are very different characters.I think its unfair to judge a movie for it being different when its opening telling you "yeah this film is different"

I am pleasantly surprised at how much I agree! If I nitpick, I do genuinely love Search for Spock and would put it as classic Trek. But I can't argue with your placement. And I really want to dislike the Abrams movies, because they really aren't Trek. But the first and third arguably are kinda fun.

As a lifelong Trekkie, Star Trek The Motion Picture is a guilty pleasure movie. It felt like the kind of story Gene wanted to tell. Not a dumbed down story about revenge or a super weapon. But a story of space exploration and of self discovery Is it flawed? Absolutely. But I've always been a big fan Undiscovered Country is still my favorite though. Search for Spock is a great movie that has the misfortune of being sandwiched between Wrath of Khan and Voyage Home

Star Trek 2009 3.5/5 - I've always felt like the JJ movies are more of 21st century action movies rather than true Star trek stories thus I've never liked them as much as I wish I did 8. Star Trek Beyond 3/5 9. Star Trek Insurrection 2.5/5 10. Star Trek Into Darkness 2/5 11. Star Trek 5 The Final Frontier 1.5/5 12. Star Trek Generations 1.5/5 13. The interesting thing to me about Nemesis (Stuart Baird) is that it if you look at this IMDb page, you will see that he is not really a director at all, he was an editor. In fact, he was the editor for some great movies, like Superman the Movie, some of the Daniel Craig Bond films. (And funny enough Demolition Man, which if I remember right is a movie Sean likes). So I'm sure he's good at that job. But he is NOT cut out to be a director.

My Tier List: *Have not seen Section 31, was going to then I saw your reaction video. A- Voyage Home, First Contact, Galaxy Quest, Into Darkness *Just going to touch on a few points. I will always defend Into Darkness because I do see payoffs. I always appreciated the mentoring Pike would give Kirk. To me, that's an interesting concept. That opening sequence was set up to have that argument with Pike and Kirk and also to evolve the relationship with Kirk and Spock. The other payoff is when Khan mocks Spock with him being a Vulcan and that he can't even think break a rule and thinks he can't break bone. Sets up a great fight sequence between the two of them. B- Wrath of Khan, Undiscovered County, Generations, Nemesis, Beyond * Soran is very underrated villian. It's an interesting concept to reach a realm where you can have everything you want but at the cost of so much destruction. That's an interesting to me. I like this film. I was satisfied with the plot points. *Even though Data dies, I still enjoy Nemesis. I guess it's because it's the Trek I grew up with. So I'm a more forgiving audience. *Beyond- one thing I really appreciated in this film is the banter between Bones and Spock because we didn't see that too much in the other Kelvin films. C- The Search for Spock, I love the first half of the movie where the characters are dealing with the loss of Spock and Bones psychotic break and they still the Excelsior. D- The Final Frontier, 2009 *I really enjoy the beginning of this film between the Big Three but other than that the whole premise of this film is off. We find out Spock has a brother who we never knew about to this point. And then this idea of reaching the center of the universe so we don't feel pain seems off to me. E- Motion Picture, Insurrection *When I first saw Insurrection in theatres, I really enjoyed it. But, when I rewatched it, the whole romantic notion that Picard was having with the Baku lady but she was married and had a child and yet he somehow was trying to get involved with her, I mean....litterally shrugging my shoulders in disbelief. Everything esle about this film I enjoy. The comedy, Data learning to be a kid with Mike Welch, I mean that was cool but Picard....smh.

My biggest hot take is that STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS is one of the most entertaining movies in the franchise but also most of the movies are fine at best. TWOK is definitely the best, but it did ruin all future Star Trek movies (except for TVH.) Because now every movie has to include some big-bad villain usually out for revenge. This is why I hold TMP in such high regard because it explores deeper themes.

Hey Sean, I love your videos and always watch because I respect your perspective on films though our tastes don’t always match up. However, in this case, regarding Star Trek movies, I am in lockstep with all your rankings. Even Star Trek V, which I remember seeing in theater . . . knowing William Shatner directed so adjusting my expectations . . . and still leaving the theater pissed off. Yet, with time and the TNG movie misfires (except “First Contact”), J.J. Abrams’ fun but soulless caricatures of Trek (granted “Into Darkness” was totally out of bounds), and Paramount’s nearly 7 year mission to suck the wonder and hopefulness out of the Star Trek TV universe (with the exception of “Strange New Worlds” which is making an effort) I think Star Trek V now is a mediocre, messy production that has some nugget of story merit and decent character interaction. It’s like the franchise’s Warp engine just ran out of gas because the dilithium crystals all cracked. So, I have no interest in seeing “Section 31” at all. Thank you for your big role in waving me off from watching. You did me a solid! 😉

It's great to hear Sean talking about Star Trek, something he obviously enjoys. I hope he doesn't have to mention the Sony Spider-Man adjacent movies, the Razzies or Emilia Perez again anytime soon. I agree with nearly everything he said about the ST movies. TWOK is occasionally re-released in theaters and it makes an unforgettable impression. It captures the feeling of being in space as well as any sci-fi movie that I can remember. Nick Meyer should have earned a best director nom. I like Generations more than Sean because the actors (most notably McDowell and Goldberg) sold me on the concept of the Nexus. Into Darkness is probably the worst movie rip-off I've ever seen. The homage to TWOK lacks authenticity and any depth of emotion. It is all surface level.

I was 9 years old when T.O.S. premiered. I been a fan since then. Except for Star Trek 5 ,I've liked all of those films. The TNG films I've liked except for the first half of Nemesis. The Kelvin-verse films while not perfect were an entertaining variant . What I can't abide is Alex Kurtzman's Discovery verse. With the exception of Picard season 3, which was done by Terry Matalas, everything that he's done is dreadful with Section 31 being the absolute worst. I'm hoping that they will sack him soon and replace him with someone who actually loves and has knowledge of what Trek is.

You wouldn't include Spaceballs with a Star Wars ranking. I will never understand why Into Darkness gets so much hate. It's a film about Kirk gaining humility, a film where his arrogance almost cost him the lives of his crew. It's not mean spirited, and it's not ripping off Wrath of Khan. The themes are different. Khan is about mortality. Into Darkness completes Kirk's arc from the 2009 film and explains why Kirk is more mature in Beyond.

I get so tired of people following trends for not only movies, but just whatever’s trending like “if you don’t think this way, you’re a loser and you’re wrong.” What most people try to do is fit in, but it’s even cooler if you simply have your own thoughts. If you think Saving Private Ryan is a terrible movie if that’s how you feel, that’s more respect from me than if you were to say it’s good just because it’s widely regarded as one of Spielberg’s best. If you have an opinion that happens to match other people’s opinions, that’s cool too. I really enjoyed it. Better actors. Grant it, I'm not a trecky .
