I love the fact the pier has its own rail station to make the connection to the ferry much easier! And the line using former Tube stock makes it so unique! This reminds me of another small island rail line that uses a subway system's rolling stock that goes from one end of the island to another and connects with an important ferry, the Staten Island Railway in NYC! It goes between St. George on the North Shore and Tottenville on the South Shore of Staten Island for 14 miles, connecting with the Staten Island Ferry to South Ferry in Manhattan at St. George terminal which is also a bus hub. Its trains are timed to connect with the ferry, and the ferry has been free since 1997! When you transfer from the SIR to the ferry and enter a subway station when you arrive in Manhattan, it counts as a free transfer! It used to have two other branches, the North Shore Branch and the South Beach Branch, which both closed in the 1950s. The railroad was first incorporated in 1851 and was originally financed thanks to Cornelius Vanderbilt. The line was first completed between Stapleton and Tottenville in 1860, it wasn't extended to Tompkinsville until 1884, and finally St. George in 1886. Most of the former North Shore Branch stations opened in 1886 as well, while the South Beach Branch opened in 1888. Erastus Wiman organized the Staten Island Rapid Transit Company in 1880 and partnered with the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad to build a large rail and ferry terminal to centralize all the ferry landings. St George got its name from developer George Law, whom Erastus Wiman promised to "canonize" in exchange for relinquishing the land rights for the terminal. The reason the SIR is electrified is because the SIRT did so under the B&O in anticipation of a tunnel to Brooklyn that would connect with the NYC Subway. This tunnel between SI and Brooklyn was never completed, it was only constructed between 1923 and 1925, and lies dormant under Owl's Head Park in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. This ambition to connect the NYC Subway directly with SI is why Bay Ridge has subway stations, served by the R! In 1889, construction began on the Baltimore and New York Railway between Arthur Kill and the Jersey Central at Cranford, thus passenger trains used to go to New Jersey from Staten Island using the North Shore Branch. Today, CSX freight trains do so. The North Shore Branch closed in 1953 (South Beach Branch also closed that same year) but in 1957, Elizabeth II used the North Shore Branch as part of her journey from DC to NYC and took the Staten Island Ferry! Between 1925 and 1973, the SIRT used ME-1s made exclusively for it, though they were also used on the NYC Subway as the NYCTA (now both are under the MTA) bought 25 of them from Staten Island. In 1973, these were replaced with modified R44s built by the former St. Louis Car Company. The R44 operated on the NYC Subway from 1971 to 2010, but the SIRT has used them up until the 2020s when they're finally replaced by the R211S.

Great to see you guys in my area, shame I didn’t know you were here. I live about 100 yards from Ryde Esplanade. The Island line is unique but is beset with problems mostly concerning the pier. You are correct that the height restriction in the tunnel is the reason for using old tube stock. The 38 stock was crazy to ride, it was like a fairground ride. The “new” ex District Line stock is so smooth in comparison. Last year the line was out of action for weeks when Ryde tunnel was flooded, and I mean proper flooded. The water was almost at the top of the tunnel roof. Smallbrook Junction is only used when the steam railway is running. There is no access out to the road. Hope you enjoyed the Island.

@@tonycook603 I'm from London, so even the 484s seem familiar in the fact they bounce around a lot (needless to say I have spent a lot of time on the Metropolitan Line), although one thing I did note was the very loud doors on the new Island Line trains! Interesting to find out about the tunnel restrictions, didn't know that's why old tube stock was used, as well as Smallbrook Junction being closed for most of the year, it's cool to think I visited when it was open. I absolutely loved your island, I spent my nights at St Catherine's Lighthouse if you know where that is, stunning location, you have an absolutely beautiful island!

There are other stations around the world that also don't have any exits/entrances! Like the eBART section of BART's Yellow Line in the Bay Area of California! The e in eBART stands for "East Contra Costa County", and it acts as an extension for Yellow Line riders. The Yellow Line, like the rest of BART, is 5 ft 6 in gauge (used on the Indian subcontinent) that's electrified with third-rail, except for the eBART section that is a diesel light-rail running on standard-gauge. To connect to eBART, riders get off at a special platform for cross-platform transfers just east of Pittsburg/Bay Point station. Meaning the electric Yellow Line train first drops off passengers at the electric-only Pittsburg/Bay Point for those not transferring, before continuing .6 miles east to the eBART platform without exits/entrances. There's a station in Japan called Seiryu Miharashi-eki (for those who don't know: it translates to "Clear Stream Viewing Platform Station") that opened in 2019 and the platform simply exists to admire the views! Not every train on the Nishikigawa Seiryū Line stops there as it's only special trains that do. In County Mayo, Ireland, Manulla Junction station also acts only as a transfer station without exists/entrances, it's only for passengers travelling to or from Foxford or Ballina on the Commuter service, who transfer to or from Dublin-Westport trains on the InterCity service. The station actually originally opened in 1868 with entrances! Their original signal cabin was destroyed during the Irish Civil War! The station closed their entrances/exits in 1963. A famous example is the former Manhattan Transfer station in New Jersey. The background for it is the corridor between Philly and NYC wasn't always electrified. And before 1910, no railroad that crossed NJ went to NYC, they opted to build their terminals on the NJ waterfront. The Pennsylvania RR built theirs at Exchange Place. But in November 1910, they opened the New York Tunnel Extension, a line that ran through a pair of tunnels under the Hudson River to New York Penn Station. This new line branched off the original line two miles east of Newark, then ran northeast across the Meadowlands to the tunnels. Just west of the split, the PRR built the Manhattan Transfer station. Passenger trains bound for New York Penn paused there so that their steam locomotives could be replaced by electric locomotives that could run through the tunnel under the river. The station also allowed passengers to change trains, which riders on the main line could transfer to local trains to Exchange Place. The H&M, the precursor to the PATH, started operating to Newark in 1911, with a stop at Manhattan Transfer. The station closed in 1937, so what happened? The PRR chose to electrify to Philadelphia, making the need to switch locomotives obsolete, and the PRR and Newark government chose to build Newark Penn Station. Manhattan Transfer was so famous, it became the name of an acclaimed novel in 1925 by John Dos Passos, and in turn a 1969 jazz vocal group named themselves Manhattan Transfer after the novel!

I was there just last week, went for a train drivers interview, sadly didn't get the job. I would recommend going back to Brading during the summer, it's a hidden gem. The station has a community cafe, a railway museum and tours of the old signal box. Not sure if it survived lock down but about a 15 minute walk away is a chocolate cafe. As for Smallbrook Jnc, if you miss the last island line train, you need to call SWR customer service team and the next train will stop there. It happens about twice a year during special IOWSR events. A help point is being installed alongside RTI screens. There is a footpath for emergency evacuation going up to Smallbrook Lane but it's never been used. Loved the video, keep it up! ❤

Thank you both for this reminder of the enchanting Isle of Wight Railway. In 1993, I was living in Bournemouth and took the mainline to Brockenhurst to take the branch line to Lymington Pier. From there I went by bus to Shanklin, by the train to Ryde Pier Head and then to Smallbrook Junction for the steam train, meeting someone who had worked on the line in 1923! I then did the whole lot in reverse to get back to Bournemouth. A lovely day all round. What a shame that the other lines on the island were shut. Even leaving Ventnor open would have made a difference.

I first went there in 1966 when I was only 8 years old. They were still running steam trains then! The next time I went to the Island, they were rather ropy old London Underground stock, which were really ancient. The track seemed rough and uneven, and the trains rocked about a lot. Seeing this video, it's looking a bit better now.
@shaunhouse84692 ай бұрын
Ryde pier is really three piers attached to each other, there's the one with the road vehicle road, the one for the trains and the footpath you guys walked down that was recently converted from the Ryde tramway (although the tramway hadn't been in use for many many years)
@DavidShepheardАй бұрын
I've been on the previous Underground trains on the Isle of Wight. It wasn't very comfortable (compared to deep level tube trains in London) as the trains used to be very bouncy. I found out recently that the track was put on top of round pebbles, instead of ballast. They removed all the pebbles and replaced them with ballast in the lead up to the D-Trains being put into operation. Also, I'm not entirely sure where that "they can only run tube trains on the Isle of Wight" thing came from, but they ran a test train before the D-Trains were ordered, because the District Line trains are the same height as normal British Rail trains. I think the problem might have been related to the chimneys in steam trains, being slightly too high after the trackbed was raised slightly to avoid a problem with flooding.
@neilturner3658Ай бұрын
It is the Esplanade tunnel. Before they raised the trackbed it would flood regularly. Even now it's below high water sea level, so it can still happen. The new D stock LU trains are taller than the old 1928 and 1936 stock they replaced, but still a lot lower than standard National Rail loading gauge. Even the original trackbed level was a bit restrictive. Some of the steam engines transferred here from the mainland needed replacement chimneys, which were designed at Ryde Works and cast by Hursts, the Island blacksmith and ironmongers.
@mcollier45662 ай бұрын
If you think the 78 stock is bouncy, you really needed to experience the line before the upgrade in the rear most longitudinal seats of a 38 stock set! That would have been interesting filming! They were worse than pacers but great fun and wonderfully antiquated. The jointed track which probably wasn’t in the best condition at the time probably didn’t help either. For a passenger they were awful. As a theme park ride they were great! The bogie stock on the steam railway used to be the smoothest ride on the island, albeit at lower speeds. Would be interesting to do a 38 stock drag on the heritage railway to do a proper comparison!

Islanders hated them, noisy and run down (specially towards the end) but if you want to see how it would have been / looked in service the Isle of Wight Steam Railway has one restored and preserved in their Rail museum. Fun fact , the track bed of the stations and the tunnel actually had to be lowered for the new stock which is why it took so long to reopen the line when the 38 stock finally went.
