Disclaimer: This is missing a lot of stations. I only went off the NMSA list at the time of making this video. I haven't been able to re-edit this due to losing the original file. My apologies.
Charlie Van Dyke is one of the most well known television and radio announcers throughout the United States. He has been the voice of many stations' opens to their newscasts for nearly 40 years. As a special video, here is a compilation of an open from every station he has announced for.
Information for this video as well as the audio only recordings were sourced from the News Music Search Archive (NMSA) website. You can find it here: www.southernmed...
A big thanks goes to everyone who uploaded any of the featured opens.
No content from this compilation is owned by me, they are all owned by their own respective owners.
I might possibly do more announcer compilations in the future, stay tuned!

you were on the right track though, NC isn’t too far off from the area, cause you got cities like Naggshead, Elizabeth City, Moyock, then you got the Winston-Salem/Greensboro/High Point area about an hour off, as well as the triangle too.

Wow! Charlie Van Dyke! I was a student at the University of Dallas in 1966. Charlie Van Dyke was in the seminary studying to be a priest. He was working at the Dallas radio station using his world class voice. Lost track of him. So nice to see him here.

In the early 80’s he did the intros for KDFW. When I was little and he would say “KDFW TV, Channel 4, Dallas-Fort Worth” it scared the hell out of me. I thought it was Darth Vader.

I work for WAPT-TV 16 (ABC affiliate) here in Jackson MS and what I’ve heard, he only did voiceover for a year and a half at WAPT, I’ve called him once before to do some voiceover liners for my college station I made graphics for and he blandly decline it because he said that he had a bad experience in the Mississippi market (money wise) and he only work in the Jackson DMA which was said as WAPT.

this man had an equal share of both radio and tv. still sort of does. shows here on the tv side, but on radio, he was a big voice of top 40, but he also dabbled on radio in the country field, I think he did do a little bit on the rock side of things, but in the 90’s and early 2000s, even the 10s, you couldn’t go one state without hearing Charlie on an oldies outlet. KRTH here in LA, 2 PA oldies outlets, 98.1 WOGL in Philadelphia, and 3ws, WWSW in Pittsburgh, PA. WTRG oldies 100.7 in Raleigh, NC. that would make a great compilation itself.

I wonder if Charlie is or was a smoker at one time? His voice just doesn’t have that power it once did. I’d chalk it up to age (pretty sure the guy is about 73 now,) if it weren’t for the fact that his voice has been declining for probably about the last decade and it really got bad about five years ago.
@blind_t2
@blind_t2 2 жыл бұрын
right. like, back when he was doing VO for radio, mainly oldies/classic hits, he was a master, IDK what happened, I knew age kinda got that factor.
@scottvaldes70
@scottvaldes70 2 жыл бұрын
His voice is a lot more bassy than it was back in the 70s and 80s. That comes with age, smoker or not. Compare Al Michaels voice from 40 years ago to now. Its astonishing.
@DorvellTStewart
@DorvellTStewart 2 жыл бұрын
I wouldn’t call Charlie’s voice “basy“ now; raspy, sure, but that smooth, booming bass was what he had back in the 70s, 80s, 90s and 2000s. I know the voice changes with age, but I’ve heard broadcasters and other people older than he is now who, if you heard them talk, you’d never know they were in their mid-/late 70s.
