Market Street is a major artery in San Francisco, California. It had all kinds of shops, malls, bars, restaurants, and stores that are now closed, It begins at The Embarcadero in front of the Ferry Building and runs southwest through downtown, passing the Civic Center and the Castro District, to the intersection with Portola Drive in the Twin Peaks

It's really sad to see such a beautiful city run into the ground, literally. The mayor, London Breed, and the city board are DIRECTLY RESPONSIBLE for the decline of San Francisco. I grew up in SF in the 60s & 70s. It was such a groovy place then. Sometimes, a littlee liberalism can be like a seasoning, making society better....like the 40 hour work week, ending the draft, ect. So sad. I moved to Hawaii from San Francisco in 1988 because the homeless problem was starting to get out of hand at the end of Powell St. where the trolley car turns around. It was a tourist hub so naturally panhandlers were drawn to the area to take advantage of it. People with money. Needless to say, most tourists were repulsed and violent incidents were just getting started. I thought it was time to move. Amazed that it took a full 35 years for it to come to this. IMHO...The BIGGEST problem was that SF depended on technology-related businesses way too much, and that made its business model fragile. When Covid came in; many corporations and their employees canceled their leases and moved out When the rent is too high; it increases homelessness, crime plus less tax revenues. The key is to diversify

Incredibly high rental prices, rampant homelessness, people working from home rather than in offices, and leadership who refuses to acknowledge the real situation has killed downtown. Why would businesses stay. It’s a shame. Other parts of the City (where the money lives) remain as beautiful as ever. There is WAY more to SF than this downtown area. But downtown is rotting no doubt.

So with major suburbs and rural areas being food deserts, you are now pointing out that a major metropolitan is now a food desert as well. No supermarkets or restaurants of any kind. That's a lot of rent to pay for zero amenities, because the amenities are what drives the rent.

I first visited San Francisco in the 80s it was a vibrant busy place full of tourists and locals, all busily riding street cars and patronising a vast aray of shops ad rest, restaurants . As an Australian tourist I was amazed how like Sydney SF was . I have to say my last visit of six days was five days to long, don't get me wrong the hotel down town was fantastic both for its friendly staff and its cleanliness but a hudrebd yards from the front door the street turned into something from a apocalyptic disaster movie , homless people, human waste, discarded drug paraphernalia and tons of garbage . It was a business trip so I didn't get to any touristy things so I can't comment on those but I can only imagine they can't be much better . I've told my business partners that if they want further meetings with me they have to be in Australia ,its safer , cleaner, and no one is going to accost you for money ,I'm sorry America I love your people but your making it very hard for me to want to visit again

I hate how people blame progressive politics on the issues in sf. Of course the city has been mismanaged but the core issue is nimbyism which is an apolitical topic. Not building enough housing got sf into this mess and the high cost living that resulted from low housing supply caused cost of living to surge. Tech workers became the main demographic the city tried to attract pushing out everyday people. When COVID hit and wfh happened they left because of said high cost of living. This is literally because they didn’t build enough housing and that’s not conservative or liberal that’s just bad governance.

These massive corporate entities sucked brick and mortar businesses right out of their offices and storefronts. And the Covid lockdowns were the last straw. Can people connect the dots? In SF, predatory capitalism has consumed all the available prey. San Francisco's problems result NOT from an excess of socialism, but from an excess of CAPITALISM. Perhaps, in the long run, this "correction" is necessary and healthy. San Francisco's long period of euphoria is over. Maybe in the future, people will be able to afford to live there again.

From the UK, we toured the US in 2005 and spent a lot of time in San Francisco, we love it. So busy, people everywhere, so friendly, so many shops and attractions. We always said we would go back one day but seeing the streets we used to walk down looking like this breaks my heart. I don't recognise the city we used to love. :-(

History has not been kind to towns and cities that have lost their ability to generate wealth. Be it coal towns in the Appalachians, port towns on the Mississippi River or Detroit, once the potential to realize income dries up, it's a long way down from there. San Francisco has hope due to the weather, the bay and as a gateway to the Pacific, but it's only hope. Time will tell.

It's not the Democrats, the Governor, or 'California policies that did this. This is very clearly the end of the middle class & a death spiral for the common working man. It is the work of the 'Haves' against the 'Have Nots'. You can either afford to live in luxury, or you sleep on the street. Those are your options. It's not R v D or Black v White. It's Rich v Poor & Americans in every major cities on both coasts have already lost the battle. Because they won't throw these wealthy money grubbing criminals out of office. The people & talking heads on TV are too busy arguing about Hunter Biden's laptop.

Whoa! That was an eye-opener! I lived in San Francisco in the early 1970's, when they built the BART system and laid the cobblestone sidewalks. It was a beautiful, thriving cultural center then. It is shocking to see how far it has fallen. The political, social and environmental degradation is mind-boggling. Every local and state politician for the past 50 years should be held accountable. Also: Why haven't I seen videos of San Francisco like this until now? I watch the news all the time. I'm a news junkie. I've seen short clips of the Tenderloin, but nothing like this. Our news media is failing us, as well as every other institution. We live in a very weird time. A social apocalypse.

My father grew up in SF. He lived right on El Camino Del Mar, within a single block of where the Presidio starts. From his bedroom window, he looked down the shoreline of Baker Beach and could see the Golden Gate Bridge clearly. He attended the language school at the Presidio and could have walked home for lunch if that was allowed. He left for the military and then worked his whole life in the intelligence field. He went back to visit friends and relatives in SF, many times since he graduated high school in the mid 1950s (from George Washington HS). He said he started to notice major changes as far back as the 80s, but it wasn't until the late 2000s that the city really went to hell in a handbasket. These days he wouldn't visit if you gave him free airfare. It's too painful to see what the city has become.
