NASA Astronauts encounter a deadly meteorite, crashing into Space Shuttle 911 killing entire crew and leaving Lead Hank Henshaw at death's door. At the same time, a mysterious being, later dubbed "Doomsday," attacks Metropolis, leaving the Justice League unconscious.
Superman reveals his identity to Lois before going to battle the unkillable Doomsday. Despite initial setbacks, Superman defeats Doomsday but dies in Lois' arms. A state funeral is held, and Lois learns Superman's coffin is empty, hinting at his possible return as a figure resembling Superman flies away.

Let's be honest, this version of the story was a bit better on the matter of body count than the original comic... In the comic, the formation of the JL of the time was actually BUTCHERED by Doomsday, and Cyborg Superman was allied with Mongul rather than Darkseid - Mongul is a deranged sociopath, and demonstrated that by destroying the entirety of Coast City, Green Lantern's hometown, killing MILLIONS (and, incidentally, causing Hal to turn into Parallax and kill almost the entirety of the Green Lantern Corps in a futile attempt to resurrect his home city). So, yeah - kind of lighter on the body count here.
