It's crazy that in 2011, the Ravens lose in the AFC Championship to the Patriots because their kicker missed a chip shot field goal - and that's their most heartbreaking loss on this list. The next summer, they get Justin Tucker, who has been (at least on pace to be) the greatest kicker in NFL history. And he makes the kick in the 2012 AFC Divisional to hand the Broncos their most heartbreaking loss.

I remember that! The week earlier they went into Buffalo and shocked everyone by beating the Bills. I was really wanting to see a final Bills-Broncos Kelly in his last chance at a championship vs Elway who looked like he was going to get another chance at a championship playoff game. I was feeling ok before the Jags-Bills game. Afterwards,I was upset and having headaches. Then, when they shocked the Broncos,I was so angry. Fortunately, Elway and the Broncos won Super Bowl XXXII a year later. In fact,in the 1997-98 season, there was a Broncos at Bills game which the Broncos won in OT. Imagine if that would've been a playoff game. That's what we missed out because of the Jaguars. Man,I was so ticked off about that!

@@dukes1993724 the Broncos faced the Jaguars again a year later in a wild card game. The Broncos opened up a 21-0 lead, the Jaguars scored 17 unanswered points then turned the ball over on a fumble in Denver territory and threw an interception on the following drive, all in the 3rd qtr. When the 4th qtr began, the Broncos had enough and stared pounding the Jaguars with the run game and scored, I think 3 more tds. They were so focused on beating the Jaguars and that focus and determination really helped them as they then beat the Chiefs and Steelers, both on the road,to get to and win Super Bowl XXXII.

I'd argue for the Jets that their loss to the Steelers in the 2010 AFC Championship Game was the most heartbreaking. They had just come off a huge upset against the rival Patriots and were one drive away from completing the comeback. The Steelers 3rd and 6 conversion still haunts me to this day, and as of this writing, that is the most recent Jets playoff appearance. Also the AFC Championship Game loss to the Colts the year prior was pretty rough.

Doug briens two misses were also soul destroying. Herm purposely choosing to end a drive with tons of time left after they had just gotten a huge run and 1st down from lamont jordan is one if the single stupidest coaching decisions I've ever seen. Why on earth would you not try and get closer after Brien had JUST missed a FG? And of course the salt in the wound...Brien's first miss was a miss on what would've been the longest FG ever at HEinz. The Broncos most heartbreaking playoffs loss, I gotta say, would still have to be the 1996 Divisional loss to the Jaguars. The reason being that, despite Peyton Manning being a beloved part of Broncos history, John Elway was always The Man in Denver. 1996 looked like it was going to be their last, best chance at him winning a Super Bowl. Denver was far and away the best team in the AFC, and Jacksonville didn't look like they were going to be any serious competition. They were a 2nd year expansion franchise that barely squeezed into the playoffs. The Broncos were up 12-0 after the 1st Quarter and were rolling. And lost. The 2012 Ravens had been to the AFC Championship Game the previous season and were still a solid team that we knew could pull things off. The Jags came out of nowhere to win in 1996. Our jaws were wide open after the Broncos failed to convert that last onside kick. We all were like, "How could this happen?!?" That's the difference. Oh, and The Ice Bowl. People all over the area had trouble starting their cars that morning, and there were reports that at least one person died in the stands due to exposure. It was so cold that they canceled the marching band performance at halftime and the referees got rid of their whistles because they were sticking to their lips. What was it, -15* in Green Bay that afternoon? I still love hearing Vince's admonishment to Bart Starr before that final QB sneak. "Okay, run it, then let's get the Hell out of here."

You really think the Raiders loss in the "Tuck Rule" game was more heartbreaking than the "Immaculate Reception" game? Raiders' fans and ex-players are still grousing about that game 50 years later. Also, as a Colts fan I think the '95 PO loss to the Steelers ending a true "Cinderella season" on a missed last second hail Mary was a lot more heartbreaking than the '05 loss to those same Steelers, who outplayed us for the whole damn game. I also think blaming Gary Andersen for "losing" the '98 PO game is pure BS. The Vikings still had a 7-point lead, and the D lost the game, not Andersen.

Lots of recency bias in some of these picks. Chargers’ loss to a depleted Oilers team in ‘79 or the loss to the Raiders in ‘80 were at least as bad as the Patriots game. Washington’s shellacking in Super Bowl XVIII to the Raiders was worse than RGIII getting hurt. Older Cowboys fans have always told me the loss to the Colts in Super Bowl V was way worse than the Packers NFL title losses. And speaking of the Colts, Super Bowl III????! Anyway… Hard disagree on the Steelers toughest playoff loss. Super Bowl XXX was frustrating, but the loss the year before to the Chargers in the AFC Championship Game was worse. 2001 AFC Championship against the Patriots was bad too. Way tougher to lose as a big home favorite than to lose in a game you weren’t necessarily expected to win. Even if it is the Super Bowl. How about the loss to the Raiders without Harris and Bleier in ‘76? Any older fans remember that one?

Agreed. Getting embarrassed in the Super Bowl as the record-breaking defending champions is way worse than a Wild Card loss. Same with the Colts; they completely shat the bed as enormous favorites on the biggest stage. It's such a historic loss that it is inextricably woven into the fabric of the league's history. Also, the Broncos being upset by the Jaguars in 1996 and suffering the worst ass-kicking in Super Bowl history had to be worse or at least on par with the Mile High Miracle

'66 was heartbreaking in that they were right there on the 2-yard line to tie, send the game into OT with all the momentum and they ran into those big game screwups Landry never seemed to get blamed for (one referenced in North Dallas Forty) -- Bob Hayes, who wasn't usually in that package, was in and required to block the D-lineman who engulfed Meredith. I'd say the Super Bowl V loss was worse. Colts scores came on a 75-yard double-tipped pass, a 2-yard TD drive after an INT and the game-winning FG after an INT. Dallas led 13-6 when Thomas fumbled near the goal line and Dave Manders actually recovered, but refs gave Colts the ball.

Pre-Mahomes in the playoffs the Chiefs were 9-18 (over 55 years). With Mahomes, they are 8-3 (in 4 years). Although I hate to assume, it is likely that Mahomes will have the same or more playoff wins in 5 years than the rest of the 55 year team history. The same amount of playoff wins in 9.1% of the time. Or just the exact reason people are still mad about it today...because he had the best RB in the NFL. Everyone in the stadium thought it was going to Lynch. If that play worked, then people would still be talking about how brilliant Carroll was. And I hate the Seachickens. I like that they lost. But to me it was very smart to use Lynch as a decoy. There are 28 or 29 seconds left in the game when the ball is snapped and its second down. IF Lynch gets stuffed, there is a LOT of time to get lined up and spike the ball on third down. You still have one more shot from the 1, so I dont see the Lendale play in the 05 Nat Title game being a reason why Carroll would do what he did. They basically had 2 shots to score from the 1 if they run the ball...I like those odds.
