the thing people missed about this is that like a solid dozen of these are just regular old "we're down by a crap late in the 4th we have to go for it" like multiple against the ravens, if you actually just look at scenarios where they faked or ""couldve just taken the points"" it was actually 18/27, 67% completion.

I’d love to see the results of a team going for it on every 4th down past the 50 or on any 4th and short, regardless of field position. As well as going for 2 every time. You could even free up a valuable roster spot by not carrying a kicker. For the Lions, Fox handles both punting and kickoffs, they could feasibly not have a kicker. Worst case scenario, Fox can kick too…or even let Melifonwu kick if it’s short enough, he’s done it before. There are still times where kicking would make sense, like a 4th and long from inside the 25.

Just from my take watching this, most of these were good calls or if not good, gutsy and some of them would’ve been bad had they not converted. And apart from the 4th down they went for against the Seahawks up 4 in their own territory, none of the regular season games were lost because the team went for it on 4th down, they were already down big in the Ravens/Packers/Bears games and the Cowboys game was lost on the blown 2-PT conversion But the costliest one came against the 49ers when they went for it up 14 instead of kicking the FG to go up 3 scores… and honestly that wasn’t even Dan’s fault, it was a good play call, the receiver just dropped the ball Then after a TD, fumble, TD, punt, and FG, the Lions were suddenly down 3 and I understand why they were aggressive the rest of the game since their defense was giving way, but that 4th down up 14 was the biggest momentum shifter and caused the largest consequence, but drops and missed opportunities like that are what you have to live with when you go all out like that It’s working out alright for Dan so far but it could easily go haywire and backfire like it did with Brandon Staley if it’s mishandled
@RedHotWopАй бұрын
No, the packers game could’ve been close. 4th down from own 30. Two plays later packers scored and opened it up. You can win and lose by the knife. I get the 4th down is lions identity. If youre up by a few scores like the niners game…just take fgs, it would’ve put the game away

4th and goal at the one makes sense, 4th and a few from just outside your kickers range I can live with, 4th and a few on your side of the 50 DUMB, 4th and goal at the 3 with your team trailing by 10 late in the game extra DUMB. The thing is, even on some of those what is the reward for the gamble. A new set of downs? Ok so you still have to do something with that. You took a 50/50 gamble just to keep a drive alive but aren't guaranteed points. Man I would love to play poker against this guy.

Going for it when you are up 24 10 in field goal range in the 3rd quarter of the NFC Championship is by far the dumbest decision I've ever seen a coach make
@hagamapama2 ай бұрын
Then you must have been an embryo when Pete Carroll called a pass play iin SB49 That was way, way worse. I don't think what Campbell did is all that bad. He knows that the 9ers have a strong offense and his defense isn't fantastic. He's going to have to score often to win, so that's what he tries to do. this time it didn't work. But it worked to get him that far, and for a team as starved for postseason success as Detroit, even getting this far was huge.
@mfv5332 ай бұрын
@@hagamapama Thinking getting this far was huge is a terrible way to look at it. He blew a 14 point lead by using analytics aggressively. Having a 17 point lead halfway through the 3rd quarter puts alot of pressure on San Fran and would have allowed his defense to play aggressively up 3 scores. He literally set his team to fail by letting San Fran take all the momentum.
