I just finished season 8 so your channel came up just in time! Love the content style and your deep analysis shows a very great understanding of the series. I only have 2 issues: 1. I think you missed a kill during season 5, when Dexter had to kill Liddy. You could argue that rule one, "Don't get caught" takes higher priority so that was his only choice in the moment was correct and thus did not break the rule, but I think It Is still worth mentioning cause it's the same situation as Doakes and LaGuerta where it's a conflict between the two rules, and Dexter did eventually chose to kill for LaGuerta case. 2. The video only mentioned kills that broke the 2nd rule "Never kill an innocent", while there has been moments where Dexter had intentionally broke the first one, "Don't get caught" as well. A great example would be at season 8 when he confronts Oliver Saxon after the arrest, or during season 4 when he intentionally hold back killing Arthur Mitchell multiple times to see if he can learn anything from him. "Don't get caught" is very vague in meaning so there's alot of grey area left for viewer's interpretation, so there are alot of moments when It's easy to think that Dexter broke the code but It might not be the case. An example is during season 7, The moment he decided to not kill Hannah Mckay is when he broke the first rule, cause there is nothing certain that she won't report him. Other than those two, It's a very solid videos that showcase the meaning behind Dexter's rouge kill and I hope to hear what are your opinion on what would qualify to be following or breaking the first code.

@@g0odnite "caught" doesn't have to mean "arrested". If OP would have meant "arrested", he would have used that specific word. The word "Caught" is much more ambiguous. If you were caught sneaking candy as a kid, you were not arrested. If you were caught cheating, you might be in trouble with your partner, but you wont be arrested. Etc That being said, Doakes doesn't count. Dexter didn't kill him, Dexter only planned on framing Doakes as the Bay Harbour Butcher, when Lila swooped in burned Doakes.

I can make a case for two more violations: 1. Dan the Dentist (member of the Barrel Girl Gang): Dexter did not sufficiently vet him, only going by the words of Lumen. Dan was also killed too quickly. 2. Nick (the member of Brother Sam's congregation [season 6[): Nick was guilty of killing Brother Sam, but the reappearance of Brian Moser as Dexter's Dark Passenger indicates that this killing was more of a revenge or anger deed than a variation of "justice."

Honestly by now i think most of the dexter fandom sees dexter as a much more moral person than he “really” is. In so many situations he justifies murdering people when there were 10,000 other ways to resolve situations. In life-deciding situations, Dexter has always chosen himself over values such as honesty, justice, selflessness or the true well-being of others. There were so many situations of Dexter acting annoyingly shitty that led to Deborah getting worse and worse and ultimately dying. She was everything he wasn't and when she died and he just never went to jail I was just disappointed in the character Dexter, the writing, the show and the poor undifferentiated view of moral dilemmas on the show

Oscar Prado is a difficult one for me but I do agree with you. Yes, he didn’t fit the code originally, but Dexter killed him in self defense and also needed to kill him to not get caught. So it could be either inside or outside the code. However, it shook Dexter to his core, and he considered that kill to be outside of the code. And that’s what counts most. Debra is a weird one. Dexter technically killed her by unplugging her, but was only honoring her wishes. What makes it weird is that he didn’t really follow the code after she caught him in the church, and later found out that he’s a serial killer. He didn’t run, didn’t kill her. He had no reason to believe that she wouldn’t turn him in, but he still waited around to find out. Which goes against rule number one, don’t get caught. And Camilla didn’t deserve to die, but Dexter also thought she didn’t deserve to suffer anymore. So even though he questioned his actions for a moment, this was mercy, not murder in his book. Love these overviews btw, really makes me think about the show in a different manner ❤

Why did so few people notice that Debra was Dexter's half sister and also the ice truck killer was only his half brother.

He did break the code once more in Dexter: New Blood when he killed Logan, who didn't fit the code.

Something i noticed after a certain point when dexter returns to killing he gets super sloppy toward the end. Like not chopping up bodies before dumping and even leaving some walls or ceilings un wrapped in plastic among a couple other things that stood out towards the ladder half. I guess u could blame it on the pressure he was being put under

I think you have fallen for Dexter's self-delusion when you ask "Did Dexter's dark passenger take over?". It was always there, always front and center. Even during the ten years or so he didn't kill before the white buck incident, he never was free of his urges and his demons (just like an alcoholic is never not an addict anymore just because he stops drinking). Whether he kills bad people in a meticulous way or innocent people spontaneously or doesn't kill at all, the "dark passenger" is a big and important part of him. He tries to create a distance between "Dexter" and "the passenger" because it helps him keep up the facade of respectability and normalcy. But there is no distance. The guy who could be loving towards his sister is the same guy who needs to murder people.
