This gag was referenced in an episode of Robot Chicken. In the episode, Ernie moves out of his and Bert's apartment and Bert gets a new roommate named Sam, whom he met on Craigslist, only to discover that Sam is worse than Ernie. When Ernie comes to check on Bert, only to find him depressed, he tries to cheer Bert up by removing his (Ernie's) nose. Sam then cuts off his own nose with a knife and bleeds, much to Ernie and Bert's horror.

Biographer Brian Jay Jones said Jim Henson had the duo appear in the Connie Stevens episode because, except Kermit, all the other characters on The Muppet Show were new. Sesame Street was the show most associated with Muppets, and if viewers didn't see any of the usual Sesame Street characters, they might not watch it. The duo appearing was to show viewers they were tuned in to the right show.
