This has been explained well elsewhere but here goes: On Rogue One the director would just grab shots that looked cool between takes that required little set-up. Like Jyn with the lights coming on in the dark hallway and Krenic in the white cape "pondering his life choices". The shots turned out so cool that they used them in the trailer. This, as this video explains, happens a lot but on Rogue One people chose to call it a conspiracy to hide what the original movie was about. They did change some major things in the third act for the final cut but most of those shots weren't a part of the changes.

The Revenge Of The Sith Trailers Do contain extended shots of some of the film's clips and show a different colour/scheme for some of the clips, such as the yellow windows in Palpys office that were later black as night.

With Rogue One, a lot of things were re-shot, which explains why so much from the early trailers were not in the final movie. The movie that was released is phenomenal, but it is one of those movies that I would love to see the cut that was made that has all those missing scenes in it though as it is my favorite of the Disney produced films...

The tie fighter was the only think intentionally faked. The movie went through major reshoots. The biggest change was almost the entirety of act 3 was changed. How the battle played out, Jinn and Casians fates, and every Vader scene was changed. There was also a good chunk of stuff before that

The shot of lando going up through the millenium falcon blast doors was enhanced digitally in the special editions. IIRC the original movie version of the shot looked the same as the trailer version.

I know there were a few changes in the Clone Wars season 5 trailer specifically. Anakin is shown dual wielding a green and blue lightsaber while in the episode they’re both blue. It also includes footage from the Clovis arc that was delayed till season 6.

The empire scence with lando going out of the hatch of the Falcon, that's a Special Special Edition Change. So the trailer didn't exactly lie. It's just a Lucas Edit. Doesn't really count.

Except the trailer showed a bright blue sky instead of the white void in the theatrical cut of Empire. The trailer also shows Lando going even further out from that angle than in the movie.

A few parts resulting from the rogue one trailer ended up in the final movie such as the pilots being escorted. There is a freshly crashed X-wing during the scene when the StormTroopers are taught that blind doesn’t mean unseeing. There must have been a scene where rebels were trying to take the city but failed, which then Saw tries his hand

Luke having a blue light saber in Return of the Jedi's trailer wasn't originally a lie. His new light saber was meant to have the same blade color as his previous one, but it was later suggested to make it green to make it stand out more. Also, the Death Star receiving that dish in Rogue One does happen in the actual movie; even if a different version was used instead.

Well done for pointing all these differences out. So many trailers out there, as well as Star Wars, that emits or show alternative footage. It gives the film an interesting direction and it is slightly annoying when it decieves the audience. I have always loved the shot of the X-Wings coming into frame in The Force Awakens teaser trailer that wasn't used.

I actually went to a screening of Attack of the Clones when I was a kid. There was a moment I recall in the screening that wasn't in the Final Cut. It was outside the bar, near the "this lightsaber is your life" bit. Can't remember the exact line though. It was like a comedy bit, it actually made some of the screening crowd laugh.. Maybe that's why Lucas cut it 🤣 I also recall the screening audience laughing when Yoda pulled out the lightsaber. None of my friends at school believed me about that part. "You're making that up, thats so stupid there's no way thats real." etc.. etc..

You’ve done great work here. I work on features and their trailers- when something gets earmarked to be a trailer shot, all the vfx is rushed to completion as it’s release in the trailer will predate its release in the film. Often times the shot is revisited after the trailer, the vfx completed more thoroughly and as is often the case, the shot ends up being ultimately different.

Very first 1970's Star Wars trailer has alternate audio for a lot of the scenes. Han shouts 'Kid!' instead of 'Luke!' as Luke goes underwater in the garbage chute. C-3PO's introduction of himself to Luke in the garage is a different voice over take and a slightly fast speed.

The background in the scene with Anakin walking wasn't finished so the trailer used the temp background. Some of the shots from the Rogue One trailer weren't made for the movie such as the TIE Fighter and Jyn in the narrow space.

I think with some of these were from original versions of the film but they got changed during reshoots. Because I think I heard with Rogue One some of the scenes of Jyn running on the beach were from an original version as well as the Tie Fighter bit. Both were from before reshoots. So I think its just leftover footage. I also think with Luke's blue lightsaber in Return of the Jedi was because it was original going to be blue but due to them cutting the scene of him constructing the New Lightsaber they had to switch it to green to show it was a new Lightsaber.

In ROTS, Vader definitely had this arms strapped up in the theatrical version. It was “fixed” (because he looked ridiculous) when it came to either DVD or BD.

The "lies" from Disney/Lucasfilm that I find most curious are their explanations as to why some of these aren't in the movies. The tie fighter scene in Rogue One for example is claimed to be a trailer-only shot on purpose. I mean there's just no way that's true, it's a fully completed VFX shot that had to cost a lot, they wouldn't have shot that specifically for a trailer. It's also pretty obvious that Jin and Cassian running on the beach with her carrying the drive taken from the archives and both dressed as they were *after* the tower scene came from the earlier cut where they most likely survived (they're likely running to the ship); again, Disney/Lucasfilm claims that ending was never shot and this cut was just them trimming the third act... which makes no sense, because by that point in the movie they wouldn't have left the tower. It's like they want to hide the fact that there were reshoots and changes, but why? We already know that much. All I can think of is that the director and/or others at Disney/Lucasfilm really hated the initial cut and they want to avoid the prospect of any of this being released as deleted scenes or an alternate ending.

Not everything in a movie trailer has to be in the movie itself. Filmmakers use alternate takes, and sometimes deleted footage, for the trailers to avoid spoilers. Teaser trailers are shown first for a reason. I remember seeing the teaser for The Force Awakens back in 2015. Luke's monologue about the force made everyone think Rey had a connection to him. I really did think she was Luke's daughter, or maybe even Obi-Wan's granddaughter. After the movie ended with Rey handing Luke's lightsaber over to him, I made several predictions about how The Last Jedi would begin. None of them actually happened, but I wasn't upset or anything.

I think that newer movies never match the trailers at all, whereas in the old days there were only a couple pieces that were different, shows that movies are no longer written by a writer, and directed by a director. @ why are you getting so worked up by this? It’s a completely harmless video. I know exactly how the film industry works, I’ve been making movie related videos for years. Yes, the title was to draw in viewers, but I say within the first ten seconds exactly what the video is about. It seems like most people interpreted it the way I intended which was a curious look at the shots and lines of dialogue used in trailers not seen in the final edit of the movies. It was made out of pure curiosity, and based on the views and retention, many people also seem to be interested in this too
