It's really hard to get a comment from me but you deserve me to say this: I am not a photographer neither a videographer but an influencer (on instagram), and i have to say that this is the most complete video that can educate a pro and a debutant about lighting at the same time. That's pretty clear, simple and she use easy and simple words for those who don't have english as a mother language. I will be follow your work for more education. Thank you

In case you want to imitate sunlight, placing the light outside of a window, maybe with some haze in the room, best would be a reflector or a fresnel? Thank you

Love the video, thank you so much. Just one suggestion: if you could have included the readings of the same light without any modifiers, that would have been great. It would help in understanding the comparison and evaluating how much of a difference or improvement there is with and without the modifier.

Exactly the video I needed. thank you very much!! It's so hard to make a choice tho... I think I will go for the Fresnel plus some kind of cardboard with creative cuts in it to use them as gobos. I think that may be the cheapest option and you can do almost everything. Obviously, a spotlight would take less space but you can't have everything for cheap
@FellowFilmmaker
@FellowFilmmaker 2 жыл бұрын
If you want creative effects at a decent price you could do an optical snoot, I linked a cheap one Or if you want intensity you can use what they call cookies (cucoloris)

That's Really good. After looking at the comparison table of the modifiers, looks like the snoot looses a lot of light (no reflection parts inside). Would it be still useful to create hair light from somthing like Amaron 60d (60W led) from a distance of 1-2 meter? I need to avoid light spill as I have only a room with white walls, white ceiling.

So glad you found the channel! :D Happy to have you. I've seen folks use these modifiers on strobes, so that shouldn't be a problem at all. And for a small home studio a 60w light does just fine if you have the sunlight blocked out of the room. For medium or larger OR if you have sunlight to combat, you'll need a minimum of 100w, 200w would be better.

Hi fellow filmmakers, I saw you put Fresnel in front of the Amaran 60x that was the answer I was trying to find out on the internet for last 2weeks. No one confirms it will work with Amaran or not, only LS60 series. Do you think it just functions normal when using with amaran 60x? Is Aputure fresnel new version best choice for amaran 60x light? There are nanlite and Godox Fresnel too
@FellowFilmmaker
@FellowFilmmaker 2 жыл бұрын
I just tested it for you with the Aputure fresnel 2x and the Godox FLS10. The Godox performed better and looked more like a fresnel should. While the aputure had barely any affect on it at all and did not behave like a fresnel should. So, for that, I'd say the godox fresnel is better based on my quick testing: amzn.to/3dKSAQA

I don't recall what they are, but they are significantly less since the light is not controlled and spills everywhere. For standard reflector you can find those readings usually on B&H under the Specs section of the light. They tend to be fairly accurate

Thank you a lot for this video!!! Really helped me to understand the different light modifiers. Currently I am filming many stand-up comedy shows in different locations and what I have found out is that most of the venues have terrible lighting (Some random RGB party lights pointing to the stage) and my footage is not consistent because of this. I was thinking of buying SmallRig RC120D COB light and Fresnel to simulate spotlight in any place. Do you think that this is good idea? What I need is portable COB (easy to travel with) and some modifier to concentrate the beam to the stage but wide enough to not require an operator. Another option i guess is 2 led panels right on the stage lighting the performer from both sides Again, thank you a lot for what you are doing. Really big fan here : ) P.S. Searching for a budget options because I am working on a self-invested documentary
@FellowFilmmaker
@FellowFilmmaker 2 жыл бұрын
Both of those are good ideas. It's hard to say which will work best because distance to the subject will always matter and what kind of look it is you're wanting. The fresnel option might make alot of sense as it could be placed a bit further of a distance to get the look you're after.

I'd say you might need to upgrade your light to a brighter one if you feel you don't have alot of power. 60w can be great for some things, but if you need really bright stuff you'll want a brighter light. But as explained in the video, the projection will detract intensity, so if you don't want to buy a new light AND a spotlight mount, I'd go with spotlight mount as you'll get more out of it all around.

Why doesn’t a manufacturer make a unit that will use standard Kodak slide projection lenses? There are hundreds of thousands of these out there waiting for a new use. I’d buy that unit since I have a large collection of Navitar, Isco and Tamron projector lenses. It’s obscene that video projector manufacturers haven’t offered this option as well…

Thanks so much for your response to my other comment. I would love to see a video comparing the different optical snoot models like Sonopho Optical Snoot vs Strobe Pro Optical Snoot Kit || vs Pixar Pro EEF mount vs AMBITFUL AL-16 Focalize Conical Snoot etc. there is so many of these optical snoots so it would be good to see a video on just this category in itself. Thanks so much and love your work.

They do, but I've melted some doing that, so it's not advised on the the projection unit

If that is a bowens mount unit, then yes if not you can see if there is an adapter that exists

Loved this video! I'm just thinking of getting an optical snoot and would love to hear what is the difference between the Wellmaking optical snoot vs the Lindsay Adler optical spot?

One problem with the snoot shown here is that the grid is visible in the spot or projection when using an LED light like a 60x.
