Garrett won at least 2 Emmys for the show, so he was recognized, compared to poor Peter Boyle with none. Garrett was great, but so was Peter.

It occurs to me that of everyone in the show, Robert struggled the most with his identity. This isn't necessarily a bad thing but it made him the subject of ridicule and hurt his relationships with basically everyone.

Yes of course when a man does not know how to great himself in a healthy way, to forgive himself and heal his wounds and progress in his journey of recovery he tend to be a subject of ridicule and hurt because he does not know how he has to love himself.

I still don't believe that Robert was making a conscious effort of trying to act “Black”; I think that after hanging out with his police partner Judy and all of her friends, it had a clear influence on him after awhile considering the way they talk and the type of slang they used.

In the episode "Diamonds", it's really something, that Debra was worried about how her parents would react, to the Diamond that Ray gave Debra, because it wasn't expensive enough. To me, that would be an indication of what their marriage was going to be like. 😏
