From the Walter Lantz cartoon released in 1941, his new character just recently introduced in "Knock Knock" gets his own namesake film, "Woody Woodpecker". READ ON....
This is the opening sequence of that film, where jazz/swing-influenced music conductor/composer Darrell Calker introduces Woody in song, "Everybody Thinks I'm Crazy!", a familiar tune to many Woody-watchers, also used as a music cue in some films following this film.
But I went the extra step to show you how Mel Blanc performed Woody in regular voice. Keep in mind I kept sync and this is pitch-shifted electronically and time-corrected. Mel would have sung this MUCH slower during the recording session.
TECH HEADS: The pitch shift is -5 semitones down from middle C (which is considerable!) and rhythm corrected using the Pitch II tool in Avid Media Composer. The DYNA-STEREO is not a plug-in :-)
Mel Blanc was still a freelancer during this point in his career, very busy on radio, so you might find it curious why he'd voice Woody at Lantz and the majority of the classic Warner Brothers Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies cartoon characters.... well, Leon Schlesinger didn't sign that incredible contract Mel Blanc cooked up yet - to be listed EXCLUSIVELY on-screen - an invaluable feat - only to be outdone by actor Jonathan Harris in "Lost In Space", when he demanded to be credited on-screen as "Special Guest Star"!
As for Woody Woodpecker, once that contract was signed, Ben "Bugs" Hardaway also voices Woody - and ultimately led to money-saver Lantz' wife, 'actress' "Grace Stafford" - whom I personally believe 'cutened' and ruined Woody. Worse was when Grace got older in the late 60s and 70s and Woody got a little deeper in tone. Don't worry, I'll spare you the same example with Grace singing.
The entire Walter Lantz story is fascinating.
