JR : In our last lesson we were talking about aliens and expressing belief or disbelief about them. We continue in this lesson with some adverbs of possibility.
Dr. J: You said you believe in fairies, John. How certain are you that they exist?
JR: I’ve seen some photographs of fairies, so I say, fairies certainly do exist.
Dr. J: What if those photos were fake? I read they definitely were not real.
JR: How sure are you about aliens?
Dr. J: I’ve seen so many reports on them, I certainly believe there is other intelligent life in the universe.
JR: Thanks for giving us another adverb of possibility there- you use two. You said fairies were definitely not real, and you certainly believe aliens exist.
Dr. J: Those show there is a stronger chance of something happening or being true. How about when we want to say there is less chance of something happening?
JR: I could say, there is probably another explanation for UAPs - those strange things your neighbor saw in the sky. Maybe we just do not know about the natural causes for them.
Dr. J: Good - you used “probably” and “maybe,” both adverbs that show less certainty.
JR: Now, let’s talk about that hat - do you really think aliens want to read your mind?
Dr. J: Perhaps they are friendly, so I won’t have to worry. (takes off the foil hat)
JR: Aha! Another adverb of possibility - perhaps! Here’s your assignment: make a sentence with one of these adverbs to show how sure you are about alien life:
certainly
definitely
probably
maybe
perhaps
Dr.j: Here is one possible answer: The aliens are probably afraid to talk with us.
Dr. J: And that’s Everyday Grammar TV
