John: Hi, Dr. Jill. I heard you got a new phone. Do you like it?
Jill: Yes, it has three cameras!
John: I need another phone - my screen is cracked. But I can’t afford a new one right now.
Jill: Hey, would you like to buy my old phone?
John: Possibly. Maybe we can negotiate a price?
Jill: When we negotiate a price, we are trying to reach an agreement about a price.
John: We use a few common expressions to negotiate prices: “How much do you want?” “Would you take…?” and “How about…?”
Jill: Watch how John and I use these expressions to negotiate a price for the phone.
John: How much do you want for the phone?
Jill: I’d like $100 for it.
John: Wait, how old is it?
Jill: I’ve had it about three years.
John: I don’t know if it’s worth $100. Would you take $50 for it?
Jill: Gee, that’s not much. I’d like to get $70. You’d pay more than that to get your screen fixed.
John: Well, maybe. How about $60?
Jill: Ok, it’s a deal. Let's shake on it!
JR: Another useful expression!
John: Today we explored a few ways to negotiate a price. There are, of course, many other ways to do so.
Jill: Another word for negotiation is bargaining. Next time you are at a market or buying something from someone on a street, remember these English expressions!.
And that’s Everyday Grammar TV.
