John: Hi Dr. Jill! I’m in New York City!
Dr. J: I know that street. There are so many wonderful restaurants there.
John: Which restaurant do you recommend?
Dr. J: I recommend the Japanese place up the street because it has great Japanese food and live jazz in the evenings.
John: Thank you for the recommendation!
Dr. J: Today we explore recommendations - helpful pieces of information that we give to others to help them choose or decide.
John: We can ask for recommendations and we can give recommendations.
Dr. J: John asked me for a recommendation. He said:
John: Which restaurant do you recommend?
Dr. J: The general structure is this:
Which + noun + do + subject + main verb
John: We can use the same structure to ask for recommendations when we are in a restaurant. For example, we might ask the server about the dishes on the menu. You might ask:
Which dish do you recommend?
Dr. J: In the examples we have explored, the question word “which” has played a central role. The word is often used to ask questions when we have many choices.
John: But you should know that you can also use question words such as “what” or “where” when asking for recommendations.
John: Let’s end with a quiz. Imagine you want to get a new phone. Ask for a recommendation by using the question word “which.”
Here is one possible answer:
Which phone do you recommend?
Dr. J: In a future lesson, we will explore how to give recommendations. And that’s Everyday Grammar TV.
