A West German television report from 1987 shows scenes from everyday life in the capital of the GDR. In Berlin-Friedrichshagen, we see a butcher's shop, a hat salon, the volunteer fire department and the lively Friedrichshagen open-air swimming pool.
A queue forms in front of the Krause butcher's shop. "A familiar picture from the GDR. A signal that shopping could be worthwhile," announces the voiceover. There is no shortage of goods here. The sales assistants serve the many customers in a friendly manner and offer them a large selection of meat and sausage products.
The hat salon in Bölschestraße is very popular with customers from all over the city. Hats are all the rage at the moment and business is booming. The Hutsalon is a meeting place for fashion-conscious women who follow the latest trends and like to treat themselves.
A tracking shot across what was then Bölschestraße brings us to the next feature on the volunteer fire department. A burning vehicle is quickly extinguished in a fire drill. "We extinguish every fire" is the slogan of the volunteer fire department, which has now been in existence for over 100 years.
There is also a lot going on at the Friedrichshagen outdoor pool. The swimming supervisor there is not to be trifled with. He keeps a strict eye on order on the premises and the discipline of the bathers who bravely jump into the water from the 5-meter diving tower.
