It’s really hard as a new reefer not to freak out about the brown stuff appearing all over your beautiful new tank, but for the most part it’s best not to intervene with chemicals and media reactors and UV sterilisers etc. I just run carbon, add copepods, and wait it out. If I STILL have an ugly tank in a few months, then I’ll begin investigating other solutions. The gross looking algae/slime is the building block on which all other parts of the ecosystem you’re creating rely. It’s normal, so just be as patient as you can be.

Great vid and advice for a newbie to Saltwater keeping, although I had one in the 90's underfloor filtration strip tube lights etc etc Triggerfish Ich bad advice, but wasn't successful gave up. If you focus on your water quality and know how to act then you may often skip the ugly stages. And if you don't have a DSB you should always stir your sand IMO to restrain build ups that usually leads to old tank syndrome.

I have a 5 year old 125 gallon FOWLR with snails and conches. I used to have coraline then it crashed about a year ago. I noticed my calcium and phosphorus levels are elevated. All my other water conditions are good. No fish loses from disease ever. Also, I started to get kind of a green algae that sticks to my sand...very hard to get off the sand. Thoughts?

I found amphipods in middle of cycling my tank. Now, I’m having algae and diatom. I also had tiny bryopsis growing on my rock so I removed it. During cycling, I’ve seen a bristle worms, asterinas, snails and sponges.

In the midle if cycling, I found neomeris sp that I confused for bryopsis because it looked like foliage. I gound snails, asterinas, bristleworms, spaghetti worms, snails, copepods and amphipods. After I added my 2 clowns, I’ve found a macro algae rizome that I think is cheato.

Water changes are basically to keep nitrates in check. When you start a tank you want to cycle and build up the biological system at the start. So the fish waste becomes ammonia, which then becomes nitrite and then to nitrate. Nitrates build up over time and you want to change the water to bring that down. After awhile your biological load can handle the waste and even keep it in check where you won't need to change the water but once every 6 months or even longer.

Once you add a few items from a fish shop such as corals etc they Will however just adding dry rock, water and sand they will not for obvious reasons

Im sorry, but I disagree with most of what you're saying. Yes algae is important, but if you put in just a tiny bit more effort you can VERY easily keep a reef aquarium without all that algae looking bad. There's nothing wrong with your tanks they're unique and different from a lot of other people and I really appreciate that! But I do think it is very easy to have reef tanks that look a bit 'cleaner', even without supplements or dosing schemes. Even without a skimmer 😎

And another thing, sorry. Water changes are 100% unnecessary if you keep your parameters OK with supplements. So much cheaper, so much more time efficient!! Look into DSR method. It's great. Also having a dosing pump dosing a carbon/glucose source on your tanks with a lot of fish would make a day and night difference regarding water quality. With that carbon/glucose your basically feeding the bacteria directly and therefore greatly increasing their capabilities! Just some tips. Look into DSR your whole view of reefkeeping/ the necessity of water changes will change :)

In 5 years, I have done one or two 20 gallon water changes in a 125 gallon tank just because I wanted to use some of the water for a quarantine tank. Just do top offs. My water quality is great although my calcium and phosphorus are a little elevated due to too much food. I think the idea that frequent water changes are necessary if a myth if you have the right balance of fish and filtration (biological, mechanical).

This video could not be more stupid or wrong. Man’s is just pointing out the biodiversity in his tank and saying “when this starts APEARING then your tank is mature”…… 90% of the species he lists will not simply “apear” on their own, they need to be intruded either intentionally or as a hitchhiker on something that was inntentionally introduced. If the species isn’t placed into your tank from an outside source it’s not like it is going to apear out of thin air. I hope that this guy isnt trying to imply that all these species are independently evolving in every single new fish tank during its early stages. The mere presence of these species does not mean that your tank has matured, it simply means they hitchhiked on a fish or coral that you added. When you see these species start to thrive and take over your tank is the sign of maturity.

This is accurate, I’d also be cautious in your approach of “just leave it alone” as there is strong link between tank quality and maintenance frequency. Leaving it alone may be great for creating an ecosystem but is it an ecosystem of animals you want. I prefer fish and corals not worms, algae and so on.
