Right now where we/I am the Temp is about -30°F / Windchill's factor almost 45°F and we/I don't see any Teslas around us driving... Based on reports the Range of Battery would cut down to 40% of the Original 90% and in some instances; The Teslas could not even start... Don't even think of getting out of the ❄ ❄ easily with Teslas where we live. Cheers,, Happy New Year 2024.

I live in Minnesota and have a 2022 Model Y long range dual motor. The car works very well in the winter. Cabin heats up faster than any ICE car I have driven, even at minus 22 degrees. While the cold reduces my range, nightly charging at home makes the issue moot. Traction is exceptional. My favorite feature is the scheduled departure time so the car is warm and ready when I leave work or home.

2023 Model 3 long range owner here, i live at 11-12k feet up in the Colorado Rockies my car is parked outside all night all winter i do have some issues getting into the car when its really bad ice covered by snow or just ice and -40/-50 the battery range loss is noticeable but i dont drive too much when its bad outside since you shouldn't be on the road anyway as little as possible. the AWD system is amazing i have and still drive my 07 subaru impreza with 280k miles and that is the gold standard for AWD for me and the model 3 AWD is right there with it the weight plays a big part from what ive noticed in helping winter tires really grip. overall if you dont plan on driving over maybe 175 miles in a day things work great. PSA/tip buy a $30 windshield ice cover and shut it in the drivers side door and let it drape down over the door handle and shut it in the door by the handle and that will prevent 99% of the door handle freezing issues if you have any to begin with.

Love that door unlatch feature. When I was first researching Model 3, I was seeing stuff about frozen handles and it made me nervous even though I have pretty short parts of Winter that are bad enough to worry about that. Still don't have an M3, hopefully soon, but good to know this feature! I am going to try for a reasonably priced M3LR, though, just to be sure I can get that AWD. Better safe than sorry, plus it means more range (and fog lights and better sound system?).

Interesting. Currently I have a 2017 Subaru Forester which has 8.7 inches of ground clearance which is about as good as it gets going through the snow. It has no door handles to freeze or frameless door seals to rip out with frozen windows. But the Tesla certainly has big advantages such as preheating while inside a closed garage. And there is no motor to turn over and warm up when it 23 below zero.

The last thing I want to do when I'm on vacation is "calculate all my charging stops." If you have an accident and are trapped in that how long do you have until the batteries are empty and you are in a life threatening situation? An ICE car will idle for 48+ hours with a full tank of gas and keep you warm the whole time. This was a legitimate concern in my area not too far back due to a highway closure. Locals were bringing supplies to those stranded on the highway with snowmobiles.

I don't own a Tesla (yet) so I can't test this idea, but what if you made a second fake profile and named it "Winter" or something and you used that? I don't know if the profiles are only saving seat/window positions or also saving all your settings, and I also don't know how easy it is for you to swap between them. Curious to know if there's an answer to this one, so I thought I'd comment my idea.

Hey guys! LOTS of comments on whether to OVER inflate or UNDER inflate tires in snow. I was in the same boat. I thought UNDER inflating gives better traction in the snow and more control. However, every google search proves that you SHOULD keep tires Inflated or slightly OVER inflated due to the cold weather. Biggest is rolling resistance which will decrease your range in your Tesla like crazy. What do you guys think? Trust experience or all the articles on google? haha. When in doubt, double socks on all tires.. and stay safe!

In normal cold conditions on roads you should slightly overinflat it because it doesn`t warm up and inflat as much as in summer. But if you`re stuck in snow(or sand) you should under inflate it for more grip. But you shouldn`t drive like that regularly

Driving from Irvine CA to LV, about 280 miles, to attend CES 2024; with not that cold weather, 50°F and windy, speed between 75-85 mph, I had to supercharge my Tesla 3 times at Victorville, Baker and Primm. Took 5 hours or so before checking in my hotel. On the way back, supercharged at Baker and Victorville before back in Irvine. My thought after this trip, cold temperature and driving speed really affect the range of a EV.

Most of these problems are the same with ice and EVs. Ice vehicles lose about 15-20% efficiency plus you will have problems with frozen doors and engine not even being able to start because of frozen fluids. At least with an ev you can start it. Door handles easy get a hair dryer or my friend uses a torch lighter but be careful with that one.

I do not need to change drive mode in my car, because i have a Volvo, and they have fitted the car with computers, that handle stuff for me. So during winter and slippery, it just work. Living in Sweden so, yes, i have a lot experience of slippery conditions. You forgot to mention the windows that can also freeze and this makes it even more difficult to get into your car since the window must go down a little bit to open the door without damaging anything.

I know how to manage an Electric car in the winter. Run it on Hydrogen. Hydrogen powered cars are a way better option in the long term. Review Toyota’s Hydrogen car. It is very good. The only challenge with H is filling stations. But, this is true with EV’s too. And if needed a Car could carry enough H to travel 1000 km’s no problem.

People that live near me think 80F is warm. Meanwhile people I know in Alaska think negative temps are warm. Different people acclimatize to different things. Trying to gatekeep what "cold" means is pretty silly.

charging this, range that. my petrol powered car went from 5.5l/100km on economically driven long trips to 8.5l/100km during my daily commute during the winter(without snow). how about tell the people the real down side of an EV while its snowing? let me do it for you: the now sticks to the car quite a bit more since the car isn't a furnace on wheels. also, you will need to clear your headlamps. also, there is no gears or clutch whih are sometimes helpful in taming the car in slippery conditions. but the upside is that the gradual power delivery(along with extra weight and relatively slim tires) means the car is quite a bit less likely to not be able to get moving at all.

...as someone that owns an EV that's absolute garbage for cold weather (Nissan Leaf), I can say I made it through my first Winter with zero issues. I don't live in some extreme place like Sweden or Alaska or something, but I live on a hill where it does snow. I put winter tires on and did what I normally do for a car. It was fine. My headlamps were fine. Heating the car wasn't an issue. It literally felt the same as my previous car which is gas-powered. Also quite sure, based on what I've researched of Teslas, that the AWD Teslas will adjust their power output for the ice/snow as needed, just like your gearbox helps you. Sounds like a made-up issue from someone that doesn't own an EV to me.

@@kyleb8117 but did u try driving in an actual snow storm? I did and the lights bearly did anything since they were cowered in snow(cleaned up on departure) and it was harder to drive since there is no way to coast(wo the car breaking or accelerating) unless the driver is very accurate with the throttle. Yes, traction control will cut off power if it catches the wheel slipping and drive modes will reduce power and throttle response if the cars has them. Some rwd models actually needed to add a snow mode so the rear didn't dance around as much. Also, if the Leaf did fine why is it garbage for snow? Most people where I am from drive fwd hatchbacks and did so even when it snowed quite a bit more some 20 years ago. The notion that everyone who has ever encountered snow or gravel needs 4WD of some sort is a recent thing.
@kyleb8117
@kyleb8117 11 ай бұрын
@@yvs6663 I say it's garbage for snow as a comparison to something like a Tesla with more actual tech designed for it. My car is literally just a RWD. There's nothing built in to help me. I managed driving ice and snow alright, but I sure wouldn't be comfortable in heavy snow or black ice across a street where you'd need studded tires/4WD/AWD/etc. I haven't tried driving in a snow storm with my Leaf because that'd be stupid, and I'm a safe driver. I'm sure an AWD Tesla can handle it, and I've seen people managing in various parts of the world here on KZbin. One video I saw was a RWD Tesla caught in heavy snow and that's just being an idiot. You should know RWD/FWD isn't going to mange extreme situations, good tires or not. I doubt the notion is recent, but I do understand that FWD and RWD cars can handle off-road or bad winters (especially since my car did as well as my old gas car that's a 4WD, but defaults to RWD).

"1/3 the cost" only takes the retail upfront cost into account. What's the actual lifetime cost per mile to own your Subaru? A Model 3 works out to $0.49/mile. (The average cost of cars is apparently $0.58/mile.) I tried to figure it out with Google (great method, I know 🤡) and it says a '22 Subaru Impreza is the most economical Subaru, which has a lifetime cost of ownership of $33,919 and 75,000 miles which works to $0.45/mile. That is 92% the cost of a Tesla Model 3. A bit off 1/3.
