What I love about the Elise (and Miata, MR-2, etc) is that you can 8/10ths it on public roads - really wring it out in 2nd and 3rd gear - without fear of prison time or killing everyone within a block radius. You can push it to its limit, yet still be within a rate of speed that'll see you avoid a ticket by just showing a little bit of charm and cordiality.

I wouldn't even say you can drive it that hard on the road. The Elise is very quick on twisty roads and it's not forgiving if you get it wrong. The diffusor doesn't even start to produce much downforce until around 100mph

As the industry has gone more and more corporate, and consumers have started comparing sports cars to iPads and smart refrigerators, unfortunately we’ve lost what cars originally were - which is a machine/human interface. Now cars have become a human/computer interface. Old Lotus (pre Emira) was one of the last makers of that type of machine. So while many people will say “finally, Lotus is making modern cars”, a lot of us are saying “Lotus is making modern cars…that’s a shame”.

About 25 years ago, when I was 13, I saw a guy in his 90's on about a 0 degree fahrenheit morning at 7 am at a freeway rest stop with a topless 30's or 40's roadster he probably bought brand new. Early sports cars killed a very many people for very minor mistakes, and 60+ years into skillfully driving his later he bundled up and had it out on the freeway on a blistering cold day with supreme confidence. I get goose bumps just thinking about him. I would agree about the value of mechanical interface, and suggest computer gismo fans should at least respect and seek to understand the origins of our modern sports cars and the details different generations found important enough to bet their lives on, and risk their lives to have fun with.

I was going to wait for the weekend to watch this review but I just couldn't wait-nice job guys. Although the drivetrain layout is different, I think the Elise's spiritual successor is the original Elan for its lightweight ethos and driving feel. Everything(almost) you mentioned about the Elise applies to the Elan esp the light weight , steering response and relatively modest power. My 69 Elan weighs 1550lb and has about 150hp(slightly modded comp to stock) with such great steering and road feel. I like to joke that you can runover a coin in one of these and not only figure out the denomination but whether its heads or tails. Of these cars, I would like an Elise to go with my Elan since I don't see them as everyday type cars and don't need the comfort and convenience features of the Evora/Emira. Looking forward to future videos-thanks.

I have a GT86 and an Emira, although the Emira is a better GT car and sounds and looks amazing one thing it has made me appreciate is what an absolutely brilliant car the GT86/BRZ is for the money. that's also what I love about my gt86. It's safe "at the limit", both for the license and the driver and other road users. Considering a used Evora S IPS (no manual where I live), to replace my '14 gt86 manual. I'm worried about giving away some practicality (trunk, keyless, door sills) that make the gt both very radical but livable, without the Evora making up for it in additional thrill. I don't like maintaining two cars so that would be my only car. Interested in your feedback on this 🙏

Absolutely. 100%. I'm 53 and I think I am youthful enough to get onboard with certain trends/directions that make sense, but I never could get the black wheel. The tire and the wheel morph together into a sphere of inconsequential darkness and I think, in many cases, that the wheels make or break a car. Meaning, a beautiful car can be destroyed by unfortunate wheel choices while benign/irrelevant cars can "rank up" nicely with solid wheel changes/choices.

Great points made all the way through. As a former Elise owner, I related quite a bit with all these cars. A huge point of all 3 of these is that the Toyota based drivetrain took away the Lots and Serious in the Lotus fun making. Add to that the great online forum, LotusTalk and all the mistakes are identified and a reasonable fix given. And look at the Lotus aftermarket. Holy cow! I bet it's far more than the aftermarket for Camrys, that use the same base engine as the Evora and Emira. I mean a day of Camry production is more than all of Lotus production from the beginning of time. Take just superchargers for the Elise. I can think of 4 companies making them. How many target Camrys? I only wish I could actually buy an Emira. All I ever see is 3 year wait lists.

While I would agree that the Elise wins and the Emira comes second in styling, I must say that the color combinations on that Evora are not ideal. The 'split-wing' of the Evora 400 is also (to my mind) a detriment to the rear styling of the 400. (I have a 2011 Evora S in British Racing Green that I do feel is 'style-superior' to the 400). Great video, as always, and a fine comparison of three great cars.

Excellent points about each… after seat time in all three, I chose the Emira. My license plate… ERA NDNG.

Thank you for a great video and the history of the evolution of these cars. I own a red car, and silver wheels are the way to go. I love the Emira, but I also have other plans in life.

Great video. Well done gentleman. Is it just me, or is the Evora, particularly the 400/GT models, more special after the Emira arrived? Harder edge, anticipated to be much rarer (one of the rarest cars period actually), slightly better power-to-weight ratio, and although clearly not as beautiful, I think the Evora's design has become unique over time. The prices are still around $90-$95k for a clean GT versus an MSRP of $100k, so while the values have held up extraordinarily well, particularly given the release of the more modern Emira, it's quite an expensive car. I still need to drive one to really gauge that shifter.

An old friend swapped a K24 into his Elise. He would correct me and call it an Exige, but he puts 290 to the wheels. It's insanely quick.

The Amira is a pretty car. The red and silver wheels looks great!

This reminds me of your comparison videos back in the day. Love it guys! It would be great if you guys can bring back the S2000 for a comparison with the modern RWD sports cars, such as the ND3. The S2000 continues to be a benchmark. I remember your original S2000 comparison video---seems like ages ago and you guys haven't aged a bit. What's the secret? :)

Bronze wheels might be my choice 🤔. I definitely like the silver more than the black though and I know that wasn’t an option but... I’m trying to decide a new wheel and colour on my similarly coloured red GR Corolla right now.

Loving my Osmium silver Emira with the black pack. Gets attention whenever I drive it. I also did the cat delete with a valve controller, I know they said the car is loud enough, it’s decent, but this makes it sound aftermarket! I love it. Sounds like an exotic, unlike my Supra.
