Fish and chips is one of the most popular meals in the UK along with a full english breakfast, but which UK supermarket chain/department store makes the best version? I head inside 2 of the biggest UK supermarket chains/department stores Sainsbury's and John Lewis & Partners to try out their fish and chips to see who is best!

John Lewis for me if only for the pea's, although I prefer mushy peas. The only criticism I have is I prefer everything on the plate! I'm not a fan of food in small bowls or chip baskets etc. But that's just me.

Obviously can’t comment on the taste, but the Sainsbury’s one looked like a frozen fish and chips ready-meal. The John Lewis one looked superb, I’m sure it was delicious, and the matching tea set was an added bonus. Excellent video!

Of course they're both frozen, anyone that thinks it's fresh fish is off their rocker. 90% of chip shops too use frozen unless they're on the coast. Nothing wrong with that at all, I'd say the second one looked a tad under fried looking at the meat.

Glad you tried out my tip with salt and vinegar😊🥰 Id love to see you trying out other takeaways... or even a mixed grill... because around us (Fareham) we cant find a pub that does it anymore?! The sainsbury's fish had a look of frozen fish,the skin on the chips,not a good thing,and garden peas over mushy peas was wrong,the John Lewis version was the absolute winner for me,cheers for another quality food review.

Excellent review. As soon as I saw Sainsbury's fish and chips I was disappointed straightaway. The peas looked like they had dried out and the fish looked like one you would buy from the supermarket and the chips were disappointing as well. On looks I would give it a 4 out of 10. The only good thing about it was the price but looking at what you got it was a waste of money. Onto the John Lewis serving, as soon as I saw it i could see the difference straightaway. It was well presented and one of the main things was it was well presented. Obviously the other main thing being the taste which i think it passed. 10 out of 10. It was also a good price. John Lewis wins hands down for me. It was funny when you were getting the water for your tea. That would happen to me

most foods sold in the supermarket cafes do come off the shelves. Morrisons do the same while you watch the cheapest chips from the savers range go to the kitchens and be sold for over a £1 a portion. you easy see huge profits.

Ok this is my verdict. I would 100% agree with John Lewis. It has the moisture from the mushy peas and to ur likings tarta sauce. The batter looks oily and looked a lot crispier and looks fantastic, the fish is stunning by looks it’s very flaky and thankfully isn’t polout which is another type of fish. The chips there was nice and chunky and great for dipping the sauces in. The Sainsbury’s however did look nice and the beer battered fish looks good but apart from that it’s kinda school dinner ish from the garden peas and chips what I saw at my school. John Lewis hands down!

The skin on the chips was far from traditional, and the peas did look manky. John Lewis looked spot on; they were a little bit tight with their chips, and it was expensive but by far the better meal 👍

The John Lewis meal looked fab, much better than Sainsbury's but I guess you have to take into account the price difference? I'll stick with Morrisons for my supermarket fish and chips; it's much nicer than the Sainsbury's one. 😎

The John Lewis F&C looked like I get fresh cooked from my local chippy, the Sainsbury's like a breaded F&C from any freezer cabinet. One question, aren't you comparing salt with salt and vinegar with vinegar?

you have to take cost into the equation the Salisbury's one was supper cheap. But fish looked gray to me in both. I go to 2 chippies one is down south and the other is the south west and the prices are different both are cheaper that the Johns Lewis. I'm odd though i dont have vinegar with my fish and chips as it makes everything soggy! I might dip the odd chip in a bit of ketchup!

John Lewis all the way! Everything looked superior. I've got a cake voucher for their cafe, you could've used it for dessert! Sainsbury's looked awful! Those peas looked like marrowfat processed not garden peas at all. The chips looked straight out of a frozen ovenchip bag, and the fish looked breaded not beer battered. Mind you I've just had a cornbeef sandwich and mug of tea so feeling jealous. 😅 Also I love how you show all these swish shopping centres up North. The way the news reports you'd think there was nothing. 😊

Frozen peas were displaying signs of Freezer Burn & to be honest, by the way the light was it has also happened to the fish. I am disappointed with Sainsbury’s, the fish was frozen & the batter looked flat & bored, there seems to have been no flakes of flesh when we looked inside. Chips looked raw in places. In all there was no competition - John Lewis. The brew you had in Sainsbury’s looked stronger than previous brews you have had. I hate insipid tea - builders strength for me every time. Looking fwd to next vlog. Thank you for posting this.

the John Lewis fish did look better, but all the pots with thing in more items to wash and with a £14 price tag. vs £8,10 just does not seem a fair vs challenge. still not sure if you are getting more chips since in the pot. and not sure it compares to buying fish and chips at a takeaway for value and portion size. may be that would be a better review a supermarket vs a real fish and chip shop but try to match the price and then see which gives better value. may be do review on the scampi or a roast dinner since so many fish and chips getting reviewed.

Sainsbury's is hardly upmarket unlike waitrose and m&s. John Lewis for me as Sainsburys was frozen meal!!

I don't think you have any taste. The peas are dry, the fish look like its frozen so is not fresh its definitely not fresh. The JL one looks the business but is not. Chips, peas and sauce served in little stainless steel buckets and that fish was frozen not fresh. The batter wasn't cooked you could see it wasn't crisp when you cut into it. All in all you had frozen fish from both shops and thought it was fresh!!! Sainsburys was the winner because it cost significantly less and you got what you paid for.
