This the all new BMW all electric i7 and today I’m going to show you the 5 things that I think that make it one of the best EVs in the world.
The looks. Styling is always subjective and I have to admit, at first I was like meh, for over 150K, it doesn’t scream look at me but maybe I’m just around too many cars as others around me have commented on it’s premium looks, even one passer by asked if it was a Rolls Royce. The polished chrome throughout do give it a very stately effect. The grill , whether you like it or not is sure an eye please when the sun goes down and will look like nothing else coming down the road.
2. The Doors. This seems to becoming a thing , automatic doors. You can control them with buttons, though the drive system or program a button on the fob. It is smart enough to sense if something is blocking and will give you a warning and stop. Not long ago we tested its main competitor which would be the Mercedes EQS and EQS SUV and we commented on how it seems odd that for a top of the line premium vehicle that it didn’t or doesn’t even offer soft close doors. This one of course does.
3. Interior Fit and Finish. Once you close those automatic doors you're in a whole different world. 2 14” screens provide you with your drivers info as well as the latest drive system. The leather seats coddle you with heat, ventilation and massage and the side boaters will tighten up around you when using a sportier drive mode. The crystal finish is next level but its what’s behind that bring it to life. There are multiple lighting options and animations that happen and along with the screens, it can provide you with that just perfect mood. The glass roof been has embedded lighting in it!
The upgraded NEAR 2000 W Bowers and Wilkins 4D Diamond audio system not only has 35 speakers strategically placed throughout the cabin but the 4 main seat backs have special actuators that give you a kick allowing you to be really immersed regardless of volume level. We had this with the BMW iX and still I’ve never experienced any audio system like it, oh and the speaker grills are insane and have lights behind them.
4. The Theatre screen. Sitting at 31” this is the largest single screen I’ve every seen in a car. Throw it into theatre mode and the 8k screen folds down and slides forward while all the shades in the car close. Each door has their own 5.5” touchscreen for controlling seats, climate and of course the amazon fire stick app running though the built in 5G connection. Pair this with the heated, ventilated massaging seats on this model. In this i7, you’ll seldomly hear anyone trying to call shotgun for the front, in fact I was showing the car to the neighbours and people were fighting for the back.
5. Drivetrain. Lets run through the numbers first. Dual motor, 536hp 549 lb.ft 0-100 4,7 sec. DC fast charging up to 195 kW for the just over 100 kWh battery. Fully charged up will get you up to 512 kms or 318 miles. What I love is that this Is still a 7 series and drives like one. The dynamic dampers are so accurate and precise whether at speed or going for slow big speed bumps, perfect for carrying passengers. You get whisked up to speed without snapping your neck, its just smooth, what luxury should feel like and I love that for some you may want to use full regen braking but you have an option and I love the automatic regen so you can easily just coast which once again adds to the luxury experience. When you do use the brakes, they feel very linear and easy to modulate unlike the brakes on the Mercedes EQS which really were much harder to use. Like the EQS though, the i7 is equipped with 4ws, although only 3,5 degrees compared to the max 10 degrees on the Mercedes it’s still very welcome for maneuvering this large luxury sled in tighter areas. This i7b is also equipped with the drive assist plus feature which allows you to drive hands free on certain mapped roads. On these roads it works perfect although its not on all r
Final thoughts. The BMW 7 Series has always been known for performance and comfort and the addition of the i7 seems like a perfect fit to the family. Before you go and say oh too and its so expensive, I say yes it is, this is not a grocery getter and most of us will never be able to afford one however think of this as a look into the future of the vehicles we will drive. All of this tech will eventually make its way down too the more affordable mainstream cars so with this I say, go i7 go!
