I absolutely do not see the “restricted access to the open world” until towards the end of the game as a downside of the classic formula. I think not immediately being able to go to every place on the map at the beginning of the game is actually a good thing. It makes for some really great moments when you obtain a new method of traversal. In A Link to the Past when you get the power glove that allows you to move rocks, suddenly you remember all sorts of places around the map where you saw rocks you couldn’t move, and you see the whole world in a new light. That kinda thing makes getting a new and useful item or ability exciting! In BotW and TotK (I love them both, I really do) there’s nothing like that. You can reach any part of the map at any point, go anywhere…it’s boring. There’s never a moment in those games where you suddenly see the whole overworld in a completely new light. Increasing health and stamina isn’t really as exciting as getting a hookshot, for instance, and cooking meals to brave cold environments etc. just doesn’t hit the same. I do love both games, but there’s absolutely something missing with a “true” open world. Aonuma is so, so wrong about this. It baffles me that he can’t see it.

This is the same reason why I love Metroid and why A Link to the Past is my favorite game. It feels awesome when you get the next item or upgrade and you suddenly remember the heart pieces, chests, collectibles, or areas you couldn't get before, but now have the power to do so.

I prefer when games don't give me access to the entire world right from the get-go, because when they do, I immediately get lost. I once played a game that VERY strictly limited where I could go based on what stage of the main quest I was on, and I still managed to wander around in the same forest trying to figure out which way was east for several months. Of real time, not game time. Of course, most people aren't nearly as directionally challenged as I am. ("Where's the castle? That NPC said it was to the west...! Oh, wait. West is _behind_ me. Skyward is my 3rd favorite Zelda after Ocarina and Majora. But I love all the 3D Zeldas, except Twilight, which I don't love but I like and it's growing on me. They each have things that stand out and things they could improve, it's just that Skyward's shortcomings are a little easier for folks to separate and bandwagon on. I'm glad to hear that younger fans are coming around on this game. It's like the Star Wars prequels. When you don't have the bagged of failed expectations you can enjoy a thing for what it is. I think we're seeing some of that dynamic play out with Tears right now. What's so weird today is hearing folks complain about TotK/BotW and say they wanted deeper lore, better dungeons, more enemy variety, a stronger linear story, traditional dungeon items, and then hearing them say they don't like Skyward Sword. I don't understand how you can feel both of these things at the same time.

As a person that considers SS a disgrace to the series and my first ever bad game: I think that SS was a complete downgrade from TP. Mind you, I didn't feel the "Zelda fatigue" (nor did any fan I've ever met in person), to me the open world stuff should have been integrated with a linear plot. This being said if Ocarina or Twilight are a textbook definition of good linearity in games, SS is why everyone at the time hated linear games. With the exeption of a small hub, the whole game is made of linear dungeons, even when you are outside it still feels cramped. The only areas that opened up were the sky, which barely had anything to offer, and the time-travel ocean, which honestly could have been a concept for a better game. Combat revolves around the wiimote gimmick, making it frustrating at worst and repetitive at best. On the topic of the "deep story" SS suffers from Nintendo's need to murder any sort of story or continuity, so we got memorable characters like Fi, who exists only to be a sentinent tutorial set on "the player is 3 y.o." you're supposed to bond with Fi, at least I think that was what the game was trying to comunicate to me, it's hard to say until the ending, when Fi explains to you that she can't come back and that you are supposed to feel sad for it, like she had a personality or something. Grouse is the only good character, which is why he appears for something like 15 minutes, of course we wouldn't want our players to interact with something resembling an actual person, we need to lower the bar so that Fi can pass. The game has a lot of cool mechanics, I will concede that.

Tbh the calibration and motion control issues was mainly a switch exclusive. Everything was accurate on the Wii. If it wasn't working that's because your nunchuck wasn't connecting, which would be a system issue, not game.
@amandaslough1255 ай бұрын
The biggest thing I've noticed is players never figured out that it's not actually 1 to 1 motion controls. It has to deal with the remote being the center point, not the player. So in reality, you only need wrist flicks to swing. The real concern is not twisting your wrist. Because if you swing left but your wrist is twisted 90°, the game will register swinging up. I bet most players taking note of this would dramatically reduce their motion control issues; unless there's too many bluetooth devices in the room etc.

Great video! Loved the editing! The Zelda series is what got me into gaming as a little kid. I started with Ocarina of Time, and grew with the series from there, playing every major 3D title more or less as they came out. And I *loved* Skyward Sword. The game has always had flaws, but I think people have largely misidentified them. The flaws were things like the mandatory motion controls, Fi never shutting up, and having to re-learn what an Amber Relic is about 140 times across a single playthrough (all of which were fixed in the HD remaster). A tightly-designed world focused on dungeon-exploration and combat isn't an objectively bad thing, and I don't think it was fair of people to claim the game was bad simply because it wasn't trying to be the thing they wanted. And Skyward Sword executed this formula just as well--if not moreso-as past titles. But people weren't really looking at what the game actually was, only at what they personally wanted it to be. SS was a more-than-worthy celebration of the Zelda series, and it stands equal with OoT, Twilight Princess, and Wind Waker in my heart.

I’m an OG NES Zelda player. I played the games all in their times up to the GameCube. I didn’t play Skyward Sword, however, until the HD release on the Switch, which fixed the worst of the motion controls by allowing standard inputs. It made the game playable. The motion controls, at least with the Switch version, were / are terrible. I thought the story was great. I found the Silent Realms both challenging to the point of frustration, but also so rewarding to complete. I liked that you had to revisit areas with new abilities to find new secrets. I disliked the linearity of it. Twilight Princess, as great as that game was, had the same issue: you were on rails from the start. It lacked the freedom to explore and discover of earlier games. I’m so glad for the Wild era of games. I hope the next generation of Zelda games is as open as this one.

While I understand the frustrations on the gameplay and control mechanics on the Wii, Skyward Sword served as an amazing origin story of how everything began. The details of how the Master Sword is forged. The romantic dynamics between Link and Zelda. Both are the reincarnations of the Goddess Hylia and her first hero. Zelda finds out her true calling and she is reluctantly forced to give up her desires for the benefit of safeguarding the world. Fi being an amazing companion. Groose had an amazing character development of the course of the game. Impa has an amazing design as the Agent of the Goddess. The Triforce. Demise place a curse on them of death and reincarnations. And how the land of Hyrule is built. I really like this concept of the game. And if weren’t for the commercials Robin Williams is in, I wouldn’t got involved with this. RIP legend.

I also love the twist that the Goddess Sword is the original form of the Master Sword & the implication in BotW that as its spirit, Fi is responsible for choosing each incarnation of the Hero, which is fitting given she was created by Hylia! Then again I had no trouble tolerating Navi in OoT! Skyward Sword also adds to the series lore, revealing the true origins of the Master Sword & Royal Family of Hyrule (as Zelda in this isn't a princess but the mortal reincarnation of the Goddess Hylia who's descendants are believed to be the Royal Family thus explaining why in BotW, the Royal Family rules Hyrulr via divine right due to the various Zelda's carrying the Goddess' bloodline as they are presumably descendants of her mortal reincarnation who had since passed on which is why Hylia returns to being a Goddess in BotW as the implication is that she is the spirit of the original Zelda from Skyward Sword! Demise and his connections to Ganondorf/Ganon as well as the curse of the Demon Clan which notes the Demon King's hatred will torment Link & Zelda's descendants adds explanation why Ganon/Ganondorf keep resurrecting or new evils come to plague Hyrule's Princess & Hero such as the Demon King in Spirit Tracks! It also adds to the background to the Sheikah & establishes their devotion to Hylia, thus explaining why they serve the Royal Family of Hyrule! The Crimson Loftwing and Goddess Crest are obviously the inspiration for the Hyrulean bird crest seen on the crest that adorns the Hylian Shield! Yes, it does have some experimental elements like the Wii Remote controls & isn't as revolutionary as other titles (Twilight Princess had Wii Remote controls first)! Still Skyward Sword did help mess realistic graphics with a more light hearted colorful atmosphere (rather than being dark like Twilight Princess)! Sure some enemy designs don't work as well (I for one dislike how fat the Moblins are in the game & think BotW went with a far superior design by have them be lean & muscular even though I prefer the OoT 3D design as I love the armored bulldog look they have which matches their original artwork) though the Bokoblin designs work just fine (also Fi's comments about their obsession with leopard print undergarments adds some personality to them)!

For their 25th anniversary, Zelda created the perfection of Ocarina's formula.
@AnthonyDGreen6 ай бұрын
That's how I felt. It was the most refined expression of that particular formula. A perfect-ish capstone (in terms of narrative) before moving to the open-air style. You get to see the Master Sword forged, Link gets Zelda AND the Triforce. It's like the 3D Zelda bucket list game.
@traviscunningham70626 ай бұрын
Agreed! It’s the Sonic Generations of Zelda.(funny because both games came out the same year!)
@hist150project56 ай бұрын
I wouldn't say that. It does have flaws like the linearity and lack of interconnectedness. I'd say Twilight Princess is the perfection of the Ocarina formula.
@AnthonyDGreen6 ай бұрын
@@hist150project5 fair. Honestly none of them does everything Ocarina does as well or better. Majora is like perfect side quests. All of the pre-BotW 3D Zeldas have good dungeons. I actually felt exploration was best in Wind Waker. Twilight felt vast but sparse. I wanted it to be OoT HD but so much of the charm of ocarina was just missing for me. Didn't care for the art style, missed my Kokiri and Gerudo. But both Twilight and Skyward failed to get me really invested in the races like Ocarina did. I really think the childhood part of the game that introduces you to each of the races in peace-ish with a problem, made me feel so much more for them in the adult era when each race is truly terrorized by Ganon. The races were already under twilight when you encounter them in Twilight and I never really felt bonded to them. Because you're a wolf or they're in spirit form the Hylians barely know you're there. And Skyward was as bad or worse. Those jellyfish were nothing compared to the Zora. I didn't like the narrative of TP or villains as much as in Skyward and I thought the bosses were too easy but I appreciate it more over time. It added a lot of environmental diversity. I wish the dungeon items were as multipurpose as they were in WW or SS. I guess I really wanted TotK to be my perfect 3D Zelda balancing all the things I love about Ocarina but alas my search continues!

BOTW was my first Zelda game and I really enjoyed age of calamity so when I saw that skyward sword got an HD remaster I got it immediately. I really liked it. I actually thought it was better than BOTW in some aspects and the story really connected to me, because I imagined Zelda as my mutual crush at the time and I’ve always been a fan of Moshi controls and I’m really good at using them (probably because I am standing up and actually pointing the remote at the screen seriously the amount of people I hear complaining about the Wii and switches motion controls being bad yet simultaneously using them incorrectly baffles me)

I just love this game so much, the story has so much emotion to it!! When I was very little I remember watching my dad play this game and then, when I finally wasn’t terrified of bokoblins…I finally picked up the Wii controller and started playing, this game did not disappoint

So... I will admit, I am one of those who absolutely hates what Skyward Sword represents, in that while simultaneously being an (arguably worse) departure from the rest of the series in terms of lore and aesthetic, Skyward Sword also embraces the worst aspects of its predecessors: its overbearing linearity, its over-reliance on cinematics to drive the events of the game, and the reliance on one-use gimmick to determine item utility. In contrast, I think that Breath of the Wild, while a solid base to begin anew from, still has problems that were expected to be resolved in the sequel but were rather exacerbated by the addition of NEW mechanics... potentially indicating a rather disappointing trend I see moving forward for the series where open-air sandbox "FREEDOM" is the name of the game. In my opinion, Zelda has always been best when you could go into potentially dangerous areas, but those areas would make navigating hell until you found that one item that makes movment easier, or enemies much easier to deal with. 2D Zelda does this a lot, and I think the Metroid series has something similar with its stackable suit upgrades. I've always thought that Zelda and Metroid are sibling series that can borrow a lot from each other, and even moreso now.

I just finished it and it was great. The story and characters were top tier and puzzles and combat were challenging but fun. Literally the only issue I can find is the overly basic motion control scheme (which still works really well in the over world and dungeons), and Fi getting intrusive at some points (which never was a major issue and could be said about Navi). Still an amazing celebration of 25 years of Zelda and deserves more respect

I love Skyward Sword and the new open air Zelda games, but people are right in their criticisms for the game. People are now grouping "traditional" Zeldas altogether, but Skyward Sword does not have the same formula as Ocarina of Time. The latter has a lot more real freedom that has consequences for progression while Skyward Sword has no real freedom at all. For me, I found Skyward Sword to be a breath of fresh air as I felt that with Wind Waker and Twilight Princess, that freedom became an aesthetic only, disguising very linear games that did not want to admit they were linear. Skyward Sword, on the other hand, was unashamedly linear and leaned into it with every facet of its design. It may not be what fans wanted, but it was a considered choice that enhanced many aspects of the game, particularly its inventory. Skyward Sword uses its full inventory throughout the full runtime of the game, while Twilight Princess often restricted item usage to the dungeons they were obtained. I think that particular idea of making the inventory relevant for the whole game has been well integrated into the open air Zelda games, so I don't see Nintendo returning to the well of Skyward Sword ideas. I think they would benefit only by looking at those dungeons again and seeing how to implement those kind of designs in the open air format.

Your points are spot on. The inventory, crafting and stamina… when I plaued Btow, it reminded me of Skyward. 😂 They took what worked and expanded upon it in a new way.

I had already played Skyward Sword before the two newest Zelda games, but after the massive disappointments that Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom were for me, the re-release of Skyward Sword HD on Switch without motion controls has made it one of my favorite games in the series. The focused dungeon design and structured gameplay remind me of what I love most about the series. While the newer titles moved away from that, Skyward Sword HD has only reinforced my appreciation for the traditional Zelda experience.

This being my sixth Zelda game (after OOT, BOTW, LA, TOTK & EOW), I can say this is the game where I've felt the most frustrated so far, and I've only completed the third temple. The dungeons are great but I'll have to concede the controls make a difficult experience. And I think the problem (at least with the HD version that lets you choose) is that some movements are better with the motion and some with the controller. Swordfighting and maneuvering the beetle are incredible waving the control, but bomb throwing, the slingshot and the wind device are very cumbersome, with the motion being over-sensitive.

I’ve just completed breath of the wild along with the DLC and most of tears of the kingdom in the last 2 1/2 months and have recently just started skyward sword in the last couple days. I will say that people are complaining about nothing. While the game does have its quirks and the motion controls can be a little annoying at times, the game is beautiful and very fun. If you’re looking for an open world experience, then it’s definitely not the game for you, but if you want to play something that Harkins back to many of the pastel games that we love and bridges us to the modern Zelda games that we love, play, skyward sword.

Then SS came out yes it drags but everything else about the game makes up for it. SS was a story type game just learning the origin of everything we've experienced before and after
