That last part really hits home for me. Family members were doubting me and offering to let me return their pop bottles for money. Then my mom got cancer and I was able to financially and emotionally support her for eight months, and buy a new (to me) car in that time. My uncle asked me how I was going to pay back the loan and I said " I didn't take it a loan. I made $80,000 this year after taxes." Now they think I'm doing something illegal.

I've been reselling full time for 4ish years and people in my family STILL don't believe this is a "real" job. I sell mostly on eBay but I also do Posh and Mercari, plus I sell at a flea market 3 days a week. One aunt tried to bring up taxes to me and my other aunt replied "oh she doesn't make enough to pay taxes" (I definitely do but who even brings up taxes??). They've mentioned on several occasions that they know someone looking for an employee. Uh, I make more in 1-2 days online than I'd make in a week at some of their suggested jobs lol.
@HairyTornado4 жыл бұрын
Yep. I've got family like that. They say, "you should look for something with benefits" or "what about PTO?" Meanwhile, I'm making 3 times as much as they are. Live your life, run your business, make your money. Let them doubt. They will look up and see your success one day.

Sounds familiar, and pre Covid I would also get from mom a phone call saying, “we just decided to leave town for a few days (or a week), so come over tonight and stay so you can take care of the animals” since she had decided I had nothing else to do for the week since I didn’t have a “job” 🙄. And I’ve only been eBaying since the 90s 😂

I just want to remind everyone not to overlook the small thrift stores. I am in NY and most small church/hospital thrifts are run by volunteer elderly women who don’t really know much about how to price things. I’ve purchased some really nice things...most recently a 50 cent plate (with a chip) that I sold for $100...SCORE! I have built relationships with them and always say “keep the change” even if it’s a few dollars....last week it was 16.40 and I handed her a $20 and said keep the change (and taking a page out of Josh’s book) said “I appreciate what you do”. I swear she had tears in her eyes...Never hurts to be nice ;)

I learned to make money to survive and the that gave me the smarts to know how to supplement my income for my family ❤️

I agree with the sentiment of let people know what you do. At first I was gifted little bits of inventory by some family and once they saw I was a little more established ended up doing some fantastic consignment on vintage silverware and camping gear. They were so happy because they knew it would go for next to nothing at an estate sale someday, instead we both got some money to use now! Business with family can certainly be tricky but as long as your both reasonable and very very clear with expectations it can be a win for both of you.

Nice finds. Bread and butter, can't go wrong. And I am all about the "making friends" aspect. I have had folks just send me things since they don't trust the thrift stores in their area to NOT throw away vintage sewing patterns. They know that with me they will be taken care of and new safe homes will eventually be found.

Can't wait to watch this. I literally JUST posted on social media what I do and how I partnered with my County to be a resource to pick up items from households if they are unable to bring them to donation centers. I've been so on the fence being open about it because of some discouraging and mean comments I've received in the past...but I just decided if I want to grow and have access to more inventory/sourcing opportunities and I need to put myself out there. Since then, I've had an outpouring of support and people reaching out to donate items. CAN'T WAIT FOR THIS VIDEO :)

All the items are shipped off island to Oahu for processing. They only do pickups at thrift stores so I asked if I could be considered to do home pickups for individuals that can’t make it, don’t want to drive, or would just like to donate to my business. So they added my business info to the website, and will add to future news releases and refer households to me for pickup. It’s been 2 days, 5 pickups, and now I’m nervous I won’t have enough space in my Home 😅😜 SUCH GOOD responses and support 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

@phxjaguar52074 жыл бұрын
When others find out about being a reseller... “oh I have this and that, sell it for me” , maybe they would even be generous enough to share in the sale to maybe cover the fees or taxes incurred. They see you save a box to repurpose and then they will save every other one with the packing material for the next year or two and hand it all over at once or say to please come and pick it up. Plus those gathered piles of well read magazines or those shoes They had to replace because they were just so worn 🙄. Great to have those care for you even if your poor situation may not be as much even if they will NEVER understand completely. That’s where the business cards helped. Something clicks as a real business, especially if something like quality used items is on it
