Justin, how about a review of ultralight rain jackets? EE and the Timmermade jackets have been sold out for a year, and I hear the Helium isn't that waterproof. So what's good under 8 ounces?

Love my Di-Pole 1 Li and it's huge for 1 person. The Di-Pole Li 2 can handle two 25 inch pads. Not sure I'd say Tarptent Di-Pole Li copied Durston X-Mid. It came out before the X-Mid 1 Pro. Also, I believe Tarptent has had the magnetic door fastener mechanism for a long time. Others are now starting to offer it.

I personally feel like tarptent has been coming up with new features and designs for years. They have several different tent designs have been using dyneema for awhile. The stratospire 2p has been out a long time. Sierra designs made a tent very similar to the x-mid over 10 years ago.

You're right, Tarptent has been putting out some cool designs and has experimented with a lot of features. I think where the X-Mid series is different is that its design and features resonate with a lot of backpackers out there - to the point where it's disrupting the market a bit. I don't want to take anything away from what Tarptent has done with tent design, but I don't think they have been as disruptive and haven't pushed other companies as much as the X-Mid has.

I got the X-mid 2 and love it. It's a bit of a squeeze, but it will accommodate two 25 inch pads. It only weighs about 12-13 ounces more than the Pro version, so it's a good way to save a bunch of money if you're not concerned with saving every ounce you can. Plus it's double walled, so you can potentially leave the rain fly at home or split up the tent between two people for carrying. The quality of the stitching, clips, etc. is outstanding. It stands a lot sturdier than I expected and requires minimal staking. This should be the industry standard.

Great Video Justin! When I reviewed this tent In April, my number one wish was Dan adding two more inches to the floor width. Maybe not so much so you could fit heavier rectangular 25" pads ( still a plus for some ) but at the very least so you don't have to stagger tapered wide pads and you don't risk any stresses to the floor and tent body mating seams or bottom zipper. Im so happy to hear Dan is considering this and I cant wait to see what is on the Plus model. This is looking like the Iphone model naming scheme of tents... Will there be a X Mid Pro 2 Plus Max.. ? JK but awesome to see Dan innovating. Now to keep the tents in stock...Dan is doing a great job disrupting the tend industry, the demand is here for now, and maybe some more risk should be taken on larger batches in his supply chain. Awesome vid, cheers

@durstongear
@durstongear 11 ай бұрын
The High Route has offset poles (diagonal ridgeline) but it doesn't have the double diagonal design of the X-Mid where the floor is diagonal as well. The X-Mid widens the fly so it can rotate the floor and create vestibules inside the rectangular base. It also moves the poles and peaks inwards, so the sidewalls aren't flat and guylines aren't required.

@skids62 - Sierra-Designs always seems to start with good ideas, but then either abandons them or fails to refine them sufficiently. And while the two look similar at first-glance with offset sleeping-angle, they really aren't in the same league. Owners of Durston are happy to own the best-in-class, rugged, lightweight performer, while Sierra-Designs owners have a heavy, clunky prototype tent. It was the same with Cagoule rain-jacket/poncho. Revolutionary design, made heavy and clunky. Then before designer's could iterate and perfect Cagoule, SD dropped it altogether.

Sierra Designs High Route designed by Andrew Skurka was the first trekking pole tent that I saw on KZbin with the off set pole design. The one thing Zpacks has going for it aside from the tent is company size. While both are cottage sized, Zpacks is big enough to have inventory in stock and staff for repairs. Long trail hikers want to know they can get a replacement shipped in the next town not next year's batch. Durstin is at that awkward phase of growth that requires gambling a bigger chunk of change on their future or deciding that they're content with the size they are. You have to be pretty confident in your trajectory to increase staff and facilities, and you're making a big commitment.

I dont like the word "copy". More of an evolution as the Xmid borrows heavily from other designs like the Sierra Designs Hight Route (2015/16) and the Tarptent Stratospire (2011). As someone else said its also not fair to compare prices of an all DCF tent with the Xmid Pros since only the fly is DCF. In the case of the Dipole 2 the inner is also substantially larger (width 50-58").
@Pisunisse
@Pisunisse 11 ай бұрын
Cost savings of not having DCF floor are used in hot bonding of the seams which is more expensive to produce. Personally I like the smaller pack size vs DCF floor.
@natea1042
@natea1042 11 ай бұрын
@@Pisunisse You can parrot any talking point of Dans if it makes you feel better. At the end of the day Dan will still tell you the expected life of his DCF tent is only a thru to a thru and a half which is the same as any stitched and taped DCF tent. What fails is generally not the seams but the material itself. As far as packability, if I remove the struts from the stuff sack my Dipole 2 packs down to the same as an Xmid standard. DCF floors pack larger but not by a lot. This isnt a problem unless you're trying to squeeze into small packs. At the end of the day he saved a fair bit of material cost by using 15d nylon instead of 1oz DCF but the tent cost 85-90% as much as the competition and you get a weak floor that eventually saturates in wet environments if you dont have the luxury of good site selection. You also dont slide down DCF floors near to the extent as the sil coated nylon/poly ones.
@Pisunisse
@Pisunisse 11 ай бұрын
@@natea1042 Okay, you do you. I have no ill will towards any tent producer or need to be tad bit toxic like you are being right now. Pro packs down smaller than standard version so I don't know why you are talking about those. Personally I do appreciate the small packing size as I can fit Pro 2 horizontally both in my main pack of 40L but also in my 25L running pack. Less space my gear takes = longer trips I can do with one food carry. Btw it certainly is fair to compare prices of tents that are considered to be in same category. If you require DCF floor then you simple take X-Mid out of your personal comparison.
@slipperysalmon13
@slipperysalmon13 11 ай бұрын
@Pisunisse , doesn't seem toxic to me. X-mid is a truly great all round tent design but it's true that is an evolution or distillation of the TT Stratospire and SD High Route. If I was Henry Shires of Tarptent, I'd be a little annoyed with the use of the word copy given his use of magnetic closures and offset pole design way in advance of the x-mid although the release of the dipole is certainly a response to the popularity of the x-mid with its 4 stake minimum pitch.

I’ve been following the rise of Durston tents and I’m happy for Dan. His tent is light weight, relatively affordable, and relatively easy to setup. I hope he’s hugely successful! I’ve been looking at his tents for some time. I really wanted a trekking pole tent to shave some oz/lbs and was quick and easy to setup in inclement weather. The kind of backpacking I do requires a tent with a much smaller footprint. The Xmid has a humongous footprint IMO. I’ve seen many through-hikers comment on the difficulties in getting a good pitch especially on uneven terrain. Could that be user error or product design issues? Not sure. I’ve got an older Marmot Tungsten UL 1p freestanding, double walled tent that is bomb proof and has a much smaller footprint that fits anywhere. The only drawback is that it’s a pound or so heavier than a single walled tent. Due to some extreme routes where weight matters I have purchased a single walled, trekking pole type tent. I love the weight but it has drawbacks. The worst being condensation issues and still the footprint is large compared to my Marmot. Choosing the right tent is very personal based on a whole slew of preferences. That is why I own 3 tents. My go to is the Marmot Tungsten. For saving weight it’s the Plex Solo and for space to share with a mate it’s the REI QuarterDome 3p. Happy trails…

Yes, the size of the tent is an issue. I have a non-pro 2P and we hike with friends in the mountains, so there’s often not enough space to get a good pitch with such a big tent. However, I have found that it’ll still stand (even with a little wind and rain) if I can’t get all the corners taut. I’ve had some pretty ugly pitches that stilled worked out okay.

Roomy tents with good vestibules are going to have a footprint. People will have to decide if they rather a small tent with a small footprint or a roomy tent with a bigger footprint (until we're able to modify the laws of physics).

The X-Mid 2 is a larger tent/larger footprint, but I did make it smaller for the second gen that was launched last year, so about 10% was trimmed off the footprint. It is still a larger tent since it's more spacious, but it's still one of the most popular tents on the AT and PCT so I think it generally fits fine into sites. Occasionally there could be a time when you have to hunt around more, but the upside is that you get more space every night.

The current pro 2 is in fact 44 inches wide. Even the length of the diagonal is only 46 inches. Perhaps the first release version of the Pro 2 was wider. But mine is 44". How do I know this? I measured it before replacing the Nylon floor in my pro 2 with 1oz/sqrd DCF. Compared to Nylon; DCF is dryer, quieter under your inflatable mat, slightly lighter and after many years I've had no wear problems with the duplex 1oz/sqrd floor. And I've never used a groundsheet with it. But I was using a groundsheet with the Nylon floor. 15denier 1.3oz/sqrd Nylon is stretchy thin! You might gather that I don't much like Nylon for tents. Something to speculate about is knowing that the width of a roll of 1oz sqrd DCF is 54 inches. The sides of the DD pro are 5" tall. The Pro 2 is 44" wide. That's no coincidence. We may yet see a DCF floor pro from the factory. Mind you, DCF is about twice as expensive as high quality Nylon so it would cost a little more. A useful trick is that the pro is much easier to set up with longer guys. Platforms, rocky ground. My corner guy cords are about a yard long. 1.3mm spectra. This also lets you set your poles to anything from 210 to 227cm.

Good video bro! I'm glad competition is driving evolution. However, calling the pro a DCF tent is not accurate. It's about 60% DCF yet costs almost as much as a 100% DCF tent from Zpacks. Using a sil nylon floor is a nope for me. I think I understand why he did it, but why would I buy a premium tent with a basic floor. I would use a Big Agnes if I wanted sil nylon or sil poly. Having had both, not sure DCF-floor is better. Durston is such a leap in design, it's hard to look back at Zpacks and Tarptent. Sure DCF-floor may be ever so slightly lighter, but DCF isn't all unicorns and rainbows. Was particularly annoyed with DCF-floor(s) catching every slight-breeze. How much of that was material vs design? Difficult to say. Have found Mr Durston's design choices impeccable and unassailable. Having backpacked since the early 1960's, it's an honor to be living through Mr Durston's design revolution.

I recently bought the $300 Xmid2 non pro version, took it out last weekend up on Mt Hood. The only issue I had was there weren't any instructions online or off on how to attach the inside to the fly, which you only need to do the first time you set it up. So it took a couple tries to get it configured correctly. I should have set it up at home first for sure but I had just gotten it the day before and hadn't had time. Other than that, love the tent!

I want a realisticly fair priced tent for 2.5. The zpack triplex doesn't fit for 2x 25" pad +1. My wife and I backpack with our daughter since she was 1. She sleeps between us. All these silly 2 person but not even 50 inch wide tents are a joke. We added a dog to the family. Six moon design lunar duo is best bet without the triplex cost. But heavier. @frstesiste7670
@frstesiste7670 11 ай бұрын
I certainly see your point, but it's also what I meant with priorities. I know that a 48 inch tent will fit in places where a larger one wont. A 20" pad is kind of narrow for me too but I know that after a week or two on the trail I'll have no problem at all sleeping on a slightly narrow pad. For me the advantages of a smaller and lighter tent and pad outweighs the advantages of a larger one and more comfort. That doesn't mean I'd never use a larger tent or larger pad (I have both), but there are many types of hikes where many (including me) sacrifices some comfort for other properties and the smaller tents are good options for those situations.

I can see why the X-Mid is causing disruption in the tent market. Hits a lot of the check boxes. Seems most tents are either about 19 sq feet or around 30. My North Face O2 is 25. Perfect one person space. It's more livable than Nemo Hornet for example because the roof is 22 inches wide and the walls are almost vertical. Weighs about 36 ounces. Also it's symmetrical so even though it has one door I can sleep with my head at either end. I love this tent! Sadly NF discontinued it after only a couple years. They marketed it as two person tent; it's not. But a great one person shelter. Wish they would release a DCF version. TomLovesDIY.

What isn’t mentioned is how the TarpTent DiPole has the best ventilation by far and the most usable interior space. I say that as someone with a Duplex, Xmid 1 pro, and a DiPole 2. Each one is nice for its own reasons but the DiPole has the most innovative features easily.
@durstongear
@durstongear 11 ай бұрын
In general the X-Mid tents have more headroom because they put the two poles quite a bit further apart. Some of the Dipole models have more useable length due to the end struts, but this depends a lot on what models are being compared. The Dipole 2 Li is more spacious than the X-Mid Pro 2, but also far heavier (19 vs 26oz). The X-Mid Pro 2+ will be similarly spacious while still being a lot lighter. In the 1P size class, the X-Mid Pro 1 is substantially more spacious than the Dipole 1 Li now. The Dipole 1 Li has a very usable 84" floor length due to the end struts, but the X-Mid Pro 1 has a genuine 90" of fully useable floor length (e.g. at 12" off the ground it is still 90" long) and it has quite a bit more headroom because the two poles are much further apart.

What tent companies need to be terrified of, at least the so-called premium brands, are these Chinese companies that are really coming out strong with very good quality nylon tents that cost the same as the so-called premium brand's line up in polyester, if not less. If you ask me I think Durston should be terrified of what's going to happen when some Chinese tent factory gets its hands on a truckload of dyneema and starts cranking out tents for $350 - $400. It's only a matter of time before that happens.
@Im_With_Stupid

@@helpfulcommenter I imagine they'd get it the same way everybody else who uses it gets it - buy it and have it shipped. Or, you know, Chinese manufacturers aren't exactly known for respecting other country's trademark and patent laws. If they can copy it and name it Chyneema they will do it.

@@Im_With_Stupid A factory in China has been assembling all the popular DCF tents for years except for Zpacks. The hangup is the manufacturing process. There is no truckload of fabric as there is only one company bothering to manufacture it and the dyneema strands are hand placed. Its labor intensive and the UL (at the expensive of durability) tent market is far too niche to bother trying to rip it off and automate it.
@Im_With_Stupid
@Im_With_Stupid 11 ай бұрын
@@natea1042 That's pretty much it, yeah. The market for dyneema tents is extremely small and not worth the effort, especially when you're already making money hand over fist by selling nylon tents at premium brand polyester prices. They will eventually start making their own dyneema (or Chyneema) tents and when they do the price is going to be very low by comparison. I'm not sure why such an issue is being made over the term "truckload of dyneema", though. The point is simply what a Chinese company can do with it if they have a mind to, not how it got to the factory or in what form or quantity. But then all of this misses the main point of who needs to be terrified of what and why, and I think other uber niche tent makers have a lot less to fear from the Durston Xmid than premium brands in general have to fear from Chinese companies like Naturehike.

This a somewhat petty criticism I know but whilst the dyneema tents may not absorb water and cause sagging, the material is pretty darn ugly and very wrinkly from the beginning. Of course the performance is paramount but the aestethics sure leave a lot to be desired.
