Everyone Knows That / Ulterior Motives by Matthew Sykes, original version by Christopher David Booth
Lyrics:
I let it happen again
I thought we had something together but it came to an end
I should've known from the start
That your love would just leave me with a broken heart
I tried to make it better
We could be forever
I thought that you would always be there
Never trust a liar
Our love turned into fire
I know that it was all just pretend
Cause you're counting all the sheep in the skies
Caught up in a world of lies
Everyone knows that you've got
Ulterior motives tell me the truth
Every move shows that you've got
Ulterior motives what can I do
I heard the things that you said
Told your friends that you would leave me when you found him again
I should've known from the start
When you told me that you loved me you were playing a part
I tried to make it better
Couldn't last forever
I know that you will never be there
Now you're both together
Happier than ever
I never want to see you again
Cause you're counting all the sheep in the skies
Caught up in a world of lies
Everyone knows that you've got
Ulterior motives tell me the truth
Every move shows that you've got
Ulterior motives what can I do
Everyone knows that you've got
Ulterior motives tell me the truth
Every move shows that you've got
Ulterior motives what can I do
Info:
Like a lot of you I'm really obsessed with this one little piece of unknown media. Especially because of how good that chorus is. I hope it's found, because it would be a shame to have something with that good of a melody lost to time.
Because of that, I just had to go and do my own version. This isn't an attempt to write what I think the song actually sounds like, it's just an interpolation of the clip we have into a bigger song and what I think the song would be structurally.
For the recording I used a few of the stems that were made available by @Prod.Rookieboi39 from his video here: • Video
I used those isolated drum machine and bass parts to get the overall structure of the track and then started adding my own parts and doing some editing of the current clip.
I tired my best to keep it pretty lo-fi. I think a lot of the charm of this little clip is how it sounds. The nostalgia comes from that grainy sounding audio and I really wanted to make sure that was present, even in the new parts. I do think it makes this version sound a little like a modern artist trying to sound like their from the 80s instead of an actual 80s track. I wanted The Squeeze, but wound up with something a little closer to Tame Impala.
Lyrically, I wanted to try my best to write parts that framed well with what was available. I wrote the song from the perspective of a guy who gets his heart broken and was ultimately used to make anther guy jealous.
Thanks for checking this out. Best of luck to everyone out there on their search!
