Yes, it was still cruel to keep going once he realized the mic was on instead of going somewhere private to reject her. Lots of people make terrible decisions when they are super upset and not thinking straight. When he finds out, though, he not only regrets it, but wants to tell her the truth at once. I’m glad they were realistic that the relationship had to be rebuilt and wasn’t instantly fixed. But isn’t the whole point of forgiveness that someone wronged you first? If they did nothing wrong, there would be nothing to forgive.
