As someone who didn't have social media for 3 months because I felt like I wasting too much time on it, you kinda do. It's part of culture, people are always talking about that one clip or that one trend or that one meme or that one piece of news or whatever. Not having social media takes that away and now that you aren't in the loop you become into a boomer so fucking fast It's crazy. It also makes it just a bit more harder to socialize with people in the real world because they will make a reference to something big that happened on social media which you aren't aware of. Also, a lot of people socialize/text people through these social media so if you don't have social media then your friends or acquaintances don't reach out as much because they don't want to go through the extra effort to go through a different way of communicating to you even though it's just as easy.

It kind of sucks people feel like they need to fill the void of a social media site. When I left Facebook I felt no need to replace it. Same with Tumblr afterwards and then Twitter just last year. Yup. Decentralized and open-source ones are the only social media that can realistically last, since there's no concern about a company ruining them. Imo Mastodon, Lemmy etc just need to reach a level of userbase that'll bring them into mainstream, and they'll start growing exponentially without stopping. Mastodon's already at 10mil users, which is insane because there's no advertising for it because of how it works.

I've seen people say it before and I'll repeat it: if someone wants to take a good chunk of twitter's (remaining) users all they have to do is allow porn on their site. That's one of the few things twitter has left going for it. Don't think I can see Threads ever allowing porn since it's a Meta-owned site and they're pretty anti-porn. Tumblr's sort of in an America-during-prohibition-type porn landscape. You can find porn, it's there, but you can't be too open about it.
