Mumei is referring to a type of red dye made from crushed up beetles. Red #4, or otherwise known as Carmine, or cochineal. It's not banned across the board in the US, at least I don't think, but I do think it's banned in certain parts. Sour patch kids do not have it, rather they have dyes like Red #40, and Yellow #6 and #5, and Blue 1, these are likely banned outside of the US because they're basically made from petroleum and can possibly be carcinogenic.
@beemoh
@beemoh Жыл бұрын
Beetle-based cochineal also isn't vegetarian-friendly, so it's more likely that in lots of places it's just fallen out of favour rather than been formally 'banned'.

It's mostly the gelatin. We used to use horse bones in our gelatin in the 40's, and becuase we medicate and use steroids on our horses, it contaminated the bone marrow and caused a ban on American gelatin products. We stopped doing it in the 90's and no trace has been found in any gelatin since 2007. The ban still remains though, because it reduces competition.

No worries, they're only banned because they are a gelatin product. Amarican gelatin used to be made with horse bones and the marrow was contaminated because we heavily medicate our horses. We stopped using horse bones in the 90's and they have been safe since 2007. So the only reason some places still have the ban is because they're afraid of the competition. Which is understandable, sour patch gummies are great.

@@TheAllcreatorLiveArchives Sour patch kids don't contain gelatin. They're made of modified corn starch (basically mix corn starch with water and boil it). @@thegreatbeaverssugar vs dairy. There’s bad chocolate in Europe as well (much of the fancy stuff can be super overrated due to their sugary content/texture or fillings) but compare cadburys or Lindt (super common U.K. brands) with hersheys and it’s the difference between a soft bite of heaven and a brick of grainy sugar laden brown stuff. The climate and storage expectations of both are vastly different from each other tho.
@NJAR31298

@@IRMentatI think the big flavor difference has something to do with the production process. Like hershey’s involves butyric acid, which is why some associate the taste with vomit
@drpibisback7680
@drpibisback7680 Жыл бұрын
@@NJAR31298Correct. Butyric Acid is used to simulate the process of aging the cocoa beans, which takes longer and is much more expensive than breaking them down with acid, but it adds a noticeable tang to the flavor. Personally, as someone who grew up eating Hershey's chocolate I find it weird when other varieties of chocolate _don't_ taste like that.

Crushed bugs, flowers, gelatine. The gelatin is the main thing and why they are band. Becuase in the 40's we used to use horse hoofes and bones as a basic ingredient in gelatin snacks. But becuase we have horse racing in america and we use horses mostly for labor, we have no problems with giving them steroids and medication to make them stronger and heal faster. But becuase those chemicals were also found in our gelatin, we had to stop. In the 90's we stopped making gelatin with horse bones, but becuase we were exporting them still, a bunch of countries banned any food that used American gelatin. All horse based gelatine hasn't been seen in any gelatin products since 2007 however. It's been safe to distribute. But many countries overseas still keep the ban in place, MOSTLY to reduce competition.

There are lots and lots of different types of common foods or food items that are legal in one country and not another for reasons silly to serious and they're not always clear so don't read a whole lot into it. For example currants are almost non existant in the US as growing them was until recently illegal in the US due to a fungal blight that tended to be on currants that would kill a particular species of tree that was important to logging in the USA. As such you really don't see as many currant or currant flavored items in the US as you do in Europe.

when it comes to a LOT of food/snacks/candy. The majour reason it is generaly banned everywhere else, other than the US. a lot of the time, comes down to the food colouring used, like red 40 and yellow 5, bouth wich has high links with cancer and adhd. Tho red 40 is less so linked with cancer, and more linked with skinn allergy development and adhd. you also have the old general use blue food colouring die, that was so strongly linked with cancer development, that is is close to not found anywhere, other than in the us^^

It's because America is some free trade libertarian dystopia where companies can do whatever they want and people consume anything. On the one hand you get to have everything ever and usually before everybody else, on the other most of your food is full of insane amounts of sugar and probably dangerous chemicals banned in other countries XD.

1:08 Because Politicians need campaign money for election. Companies and their owners have the most. So the Politicians tend to do whatever the Companies say. Or the Companies just cut out the middle man and have their CEO's and minions run for office themselves, often winning in a landslide simply because they had plenty of money to advertise themselves. Meaning they can do things like write up new laws that benefit themselves and break any of the smaller companies. It's one of the reasons big companies love high taxes, it eliminates their smaller competitors that they absorb along with any innovations or inventions they have control of and get a de-facto monopoly, allowing them to eat the higher taxes like it's nothing, whether or not they actually pay them. Thats why possibly toxic dyes are used in US foods, because the companies want to use cheaper more colorful stuff for higher profits while also keeping their buddies in the medical industry flushed with customers. Thankfully, the situation with a certain Beer company and Hollywood has revealed their power isn't as absolute as it seems.

We (US Americans) can't have Kinder eggs because our youth have become too stupid. They can't distinguish food from non-foods. They eat the toys in Kinder eggs, as well as Tide pods, magnets, etc.

In my country, we still have it, sold in most of convinience store. No one bother because it is too expensive in here, and when kids buy it, they usually already in the age that understand about choking hazard.

I'm surprised rice crispies are banned in the EU? We've had them in Britain for decades, and we were in the EU for most of that time.
