That descending scale at 0:20 is aeolian dominant, and it's my favorite. These guys use it a lot.

This deep cut off of the album is one that will be overlooked by many, but is maybe one of my favorite tracks from the band and it belongs in the same company as other great recent songs like "I Don't Live Here Anymore" from War on Drugs, "The Alcott" from The National, and "Megaton Mile" from Local Natives. I'm in my mid-50's and have been listening to music for years and very few modern songs really are able to resonate with me. This is on that short list of songs that still can reach me even at my age. Well done, lads.

same here too :) i do believe that these songs must come from real experience / real life, this cannot be faked leviathan seemed to come from a place of real pain, city song seems to have some kind of partial resolution but there is still something really sad about it ... an unforgettable song for certain

Yep, can't listen to this one from the LP on my commute, I start to well up as soon as the 'you're not alone' backing vocals come in. Nobody wants to see a grown man in tears on a train in the UK [or probably anywhere]. Leviathan was the track from Raw Data Feel that did the same to me. The Actor had the same effect on Re-Animator. Can't think of another band's songs that have that effect, without it being about the song reminding me of a particular time or person, EE don't even have to have those personal connections to make me tearful and that's very strange, like a kind of superpower really.
@johntate65373 ай бұрын
@@anonandonymous6045 Leviathan definitely did come from experience. The music was written by Alex while his wife and in-laws were dealing with the decline and death of his mother-in-law. Jon incorporated lyrics adapted from her eulogy. And Jon has suffered with mental health issues throughout his life, I think; so, his perspective and the feeling he imbues into his song lyrics is coming from something very real inside him. It's worth pointing out, though, that from everything I've seen, as a band they really know how to enjoy themselves, support each other and have fun. They allow the darkness in because they're very grounded and real, but I don't think they allow it to overwhelm them.
@bruhmomento41979 ай бұрын
I don't think ive listened to a song that has given me as much dopamine as this one just did, every second of it just hits the spot perfectly, how. I want to listen to this on repeat as much as i want to savour it. i realize inevitably you can only listen to a song so many times before the charm starts to wear off, so im really trying to pace myself with this album and appreciate every listen to maximum potential.

Well. The consensus seems to be, if you fall for EE you fall hard. What IS it with these guys? I come for the clever stuff (which is as clever as it gets)but there’s always at least one song on every album that breaks me apart. I’m only just recovering from Leviathan - and now this. …Why? Why? Why! Who are you, EE? The bastard sons of Peter Gabriel & Kate Bush? The Roundhead custodians of the English songbook? Very special boys.
