There is more than that. The third eye is a religious symbol in Buddism and Indian culture. When Evelyn put on the googly eye on her head, it suggests she has looked through the multiverse (but in a hilarious way). "The third eye refers to the gate that leads to the inner realms and spaces of higher consciousness. In spirituality, the third eye often symbolizes a state of enlightenment" From Wikipedia en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Third_eye

I've seen films where characters are decapitated, dismembered, gutted, and tortured, and I handled them without blinking. And yet, in a film where some guy just gives himself a few paper cuts, I literally had to turn away in my seat. THAT is an achievement in sound design.

I'm not Chinese but as a queer black woman this movie absolutely destroyed me. When Joy was begging her mother to let her go, and saying they only hurt each other, and her mother took the time to actually understand her, I realized how desperately I needed that with my mother. There were times when I was depressed and suicidal and simply wanted my mother's comfort, but she could never give it in the way I needed. I never expected that pain to be so perfectly articulated on screen.

I think about the googly eyes a lot. The thing that stuck with me is that Evelyn puts it on only after she got encouragement from all the waymonds in the universe. And not only is the eyes a direct opposition of the bagel, it is also Waymond's--his signature tools to help him be kind and loving, as has been reinforced by Evelyn in the movie's first part--signifying how his influences finally affected her and her worldview.

Me, watching the trailer: "Hah, googly eyes." Me, seeing that moment in the film: *emotionally raw, inspired, and moved to tears* That GOOGLY EYES are such a POWERFUL statement of... hope? It's hard to summarize just what they represent. "Optimistic Nihilism" has had a moment as of late. "Nobody is born on purpose. Nothing really matters, and isn't that just a LITTLE freeing?" is voiced, in one way or another, in a lot of recent pop culture. EEAAO isn't quite the same thing, though. In an unfeeling, infinite multiverse where every decision is already made, where everything has, or will happen, where each choice dooms one version of you to the bad timeline, what could POSSIBLY matter? What's in front of you. What you CHOSE to care about. There's a Mr. Rogers quote. “Love isn't a state of perfect caring. It is an active noun like struggle. To love someone is to strive to accept that person exactly the way he or she is, right here and now.” That's ultimately the message of EEAAO. Evelyn choses to love her daughter. To love her silly, foolish husband. To love the her who made all of those "wrong" decisions and the life it left her with. Confronted with the infinite possibilities of a single mortal life. A world where she's famous, a world where she's powerful, a world where she saved the world, a world where she doomed the world, a world where life never came to be and everyone is just rocks, and, yes, a world where people evolved to have hot dogs for fingers, she choses plain old Evelyn, with her failing business, her tax troubles, and her silly husband and her daughter that isn't what she expected, but is still worthy of being loved. Of making that active decision to continue to love that person, each and every moment. Viewed through Joy's lense, the infinite multiverse is a dead end, if you've seen and experienced EVERYTHING, what's the point of anything? Viewed another way, from another perspective, one that took Waymond to show her, it shows that decisions MATTER. All of those choices that put her on her current path mattered, because SHE made them. So why not chose to love and embrace the life she made?
@jjstarrprod2 жыл бұрын
Someone also blew my mind earlier by observing that the Bagel a black circle with a white dot in it, is basically the Yin, and the googly eye, a white circle with a black dot in it, is the Yang, making the 2 of them the complement of each other. Which is very representative of Joy being the Yin, therefore dark, moody, depressed, being finally balanced by founding her Yang in Evelyn at the end of the movie.

Saw this movie twice in 2 days. Tried to go for 3 but didn't work out. It might be one of my favorite films to date if not ever. Certainly laughed and cried, but the main thing about this film that I connected with is the infinite potential we all have and our ability to decide how we want our lives to be. It's our choice. And yes, given the sheer muchness of everything, it can be easy to fall into nihilism like Joy, but things become magic when you choose to navigate it with compassion, love, happiness, etc. Either way, "nothing matters" is a true sentiment. Nothing matters in the grand scheme of things, but you can decide what matters to YOU. It's all subjective and it's all a game. Have fun. And in the words of Waynond, "Be kind..." Love you all.

This might actually be my favorite movie of all time, and I've seen a lot of great films. This movie hit me on every level, and every aspect of the production was on point and added to the story telling. I feel that, as good as the sound, choreography, editing, cinematography, soundtrack, and direction were, the best part at the end of the day was the acting. Everyone brought something to this film and this cast was special. Michelle Yeoh proved beyond all doubt that she is a very versatile and gifted performer who can handle any role. Ke Huy Quan offered an excellent performance and in many ways was the emotional heart of the film. Stephanie Hsu knocked my socks off. They all had to act out multiple versions of the same character, an interesting challenge. This movie is helping me find gratitude day to day for the life I have, not the one I could have or wished I had. It came into my life right when I needed it and for that I am thankful. As a man whos has lived life with many regrets, many failures, many unavoidable catastrophes (as is every humans life), this movie is the perfect refutation of nihilism and giving into despair. The idea that every choice we make branches off into a world where that choice went a different way, leading to infinite possibilities for our lives, does seem at first to be cursed knowledge. If there were a few key moments that could've changed the course of your life forever, then the life you're "stuck in" would seem like the worst possible thing. But the next logical step to take when learning that nothing in life matters, is that the decisions YOU made, the life YOU lived is a completely unique one that no version of you could ever have. And thats what you have to fine joy and pleasure in knowing, that no matter happens, your life is the most important thing in your world, because there's no other one like it.
@nanashipersonne41512 жыл бұрын
I don‘t think you understand that there can be a joyful reaction to nihilism. Just because there is no objective meaning in life. Does not mean you can not enjoy it. Loved this analysis! This movie has been stuck in my head for weeks, and it's amazing to see all the unique takeaways people had. Your breakdown of this new type of 'modern' nihilism born from the 'too much-ness' of it all is really well done. I think one of the underrated and best used tools in this movie is actually the pacing. The chaotic whiplash was entirely deliberate. The movie breaks you down by overwhelming you, much like Evelyn's own experience. Every moment that it appears Evelyn has a chance to breathe in part 1 is quickly interrupted, and she never has the chance to be in the moment- something else is always pulling her away. The movie weaponizes pace to give the audience the exact same sense of suffocation and anxiety. But by doing so we are brought to a higher emotional state of mania, so that these absurd gags and emotional moments hit us much harder. And it absolutely worked! Who would have thought that gags like rocks, buttplugs, and racacoonie would get through to us and make us cry? I'm just in awe of this piece of art; nothing has ever effected me to this extent. Thank you for this analysis, I'm loving the community this movie has created!
@lw80992 жыл бұрын
I love how you talked about weaponizing pace. The rock scene was the perfect palette cleanser at the right time right when our brains are about to explode, there is a peaceful setting of two rocks. But what I do love on subsequent viewings is that the dialogue syncs up so well. When Waymond was discussing how Evelyn feels she should be not be with him at all and he said "You don't have to say it....I see it." But what is messed up is literally a couple of moments later when Evelyn first jumps she tells Waymond that her life without him was beautiful. And it makes me feel that despite her life without Waymond....she wants Waymond to see it with her. Not in a way that she does not want him, but she wanted to see her at her best.
@ananythingbagel51972 жыл бұрын
@@lw8099 Agreed, the rock scene right after the seizure-inducing montage was so well done. That take on Evelyn and Waymond is very interesting! Honestly on my watches it always seemed to be more vicious and petty at that point (before it's all reversed later), but I like that interpretation. And with how complex their relationship is, there's probably no wrong way to interpret it.
@lw80992 жыл бұрын
@@ananythingbagel5197 And that is the amazing thing this film is open to interpretation. Even on multiple views (I've seen it 4 times, once in IMAX) I've interpretted some things differently and even cried at different times. I truly feel that when Evelyn tells Jobu to stop calling her that and saying she is her MOTHER that Jobu was snapped into the parking lot, where they had their final fight. I'm sure Joy was in the parking lot....but when she got into the car, it was completely Jobu....because that was when Evelyn was talking to all Joy and all Jobu. She even relates back the doubts that Jobu has during the rock scene to herself in the parking lot. As if somehow throwing the words back into her face. It was simply magic how they had that scene at night but also contrasted with how Evelyn first told Joy she was fat in the morning.

I think that too muchness angle hit the nail on the head. It’s that feeling we all get when we haven’t started an essay due in twenty minutes, and we haven’t talked to anyone for a few weeks, and the sink is leaking, and there’s a potential for a world war now, and…. just all that shit is happening all at once inside our tiny little world. It’s an aspect of human experience which is difficult to formulate into words and therefore gains the power of appearing as if it’s only happening to you, but it isn’t, and it’s ok to feel that way.
@pleaseenteraname82112 жыл бұрын
@@ananythingbagel5197 I mean it makes sense at both angles but I interpreted that she was just being brutally honest without really thinking about what she said. Like when she calls her daughter fat at the beginning. She is just saying what she thinks without much forethought

I cried just watching this video cause it was like a mini recap of all the feelings and emotions beats I went through I’m the theaters. I saw it once on a whim cause I was bored and hand nothing else to do, then I saw it again as a form of therapy almost. The movie has spoken to some part of my soul that I want from more media and people, food even. I think there’s a way to feel this way from everything.

I loved this movie too and I have come to be a fan and lover of Michelle Yeoh late. But, just now as I watched this video - probably not for the first time - I found more reasons that I love it. The last one was the comment: "We hope you see yourselves in the characters." That got to me too. Surely, that was one of the reasons I loved the movie right from the beginning, I just didn't know it. Ms Yeoh is sensational at making me, the viewer, see her as a real, earthy, honest, hard-working and bewildered ordinary, decent person and I really believe she is a really beautiful, decent, honest down-to-earth person - as I am, or at least I try to be. And all of the actors did that for me - made me see them as real people like me, whom I disliked and liked and criticized and appreciated - because I could see something of me in each of them. And in the end I can appreciate being me and I love the team of actors who did that for me

I'm heartbroken no Cinema near me was showing this masterpiece because seeing this on the big screen would have been phenomenal. It is one of my favorite movies of all time. The scene when joy is looking through the universes and tilting her head gives me so many goosebumps. This movie went hard in every possible universe, nothing felt out of place. It was surreal, complex and just emotional. THE MADE ME CARE FOR THE SAUSAGE FINGERS, A THROW AWAY GAG BECAME AN EMOTIONAL MOMENT. It's hard to put this movie into words.

Top 5 all time favs no bs. This movie hit me in ways I wasn't ready for. I laughed. Cried. Cheered and celebrated alone in my house watching this. It took me 4-5 hours to finish because I had to pause and reflect and rewind and watch again. Living with depression and anxiety I ask myself "what if my life" at least 100 times a day. To see it played out like this by an amazing actress who is funny and dramatic? Awesome. This movie WAS AMAZING. THE CAST. LOVE EVERY one from the stars to the background actors. AMAZING movie. A24 did a horrible job getting the news out about this movie. I saw it on RLM and was like wait i need to watch this so I did. God I am so glad I did. Just ordered a 4k copy and have been telling my friends all day to see it.

I saw this movie 10 times in the theater, and I would still go watch it if it were playing. I loved being fully immersed in the universe of EEAAO. Each new viewing I would pick up on something that would pull at my heart more and more. I cried with a smile on my face so much throughout the whole movie. To think, there was a scene with text for dialogue, and it moved me, because I could still feel the characters. And boy those characters, Michelle put on an incredible display of range, she changed her aura every dimension. Ke Huy Quan, his performance made me so upset we have been deprived of such a talent for so long, Hollywood standards. And then Stephanie, a Jobutopaki spin-off movie would be so ideal, can’t wait to see more of her. Plus Jamie and James, both being assholes, in the best way possible. All the awards for Everything Everywhere All At Once.

I just saw it in a foreign language that’s not my native language. The Cantonese and mandarin parts were in original voices but all the English was dubbed. The contrast between the original voices and the dubbed showed me how emotional and well delivered the lines were. I will happily see it again in its original language because it was that good and I need to!

It's a Shawshank level of movie, you hear about it being good but dont catch in theaters and then you stream it on movie night when you can't think of anything else, and BANG you are swept away, thinking what just happened?, left feeling that's the best movie I have ever watched and like some vast religious renaissance painting every square inch has some individual narrative story or allegory that is composted into a singular message. (bit pretentious but it's a wonderful film)

No doubt about it! Michelle Yeoh is a superstar. And will always be a "superstar". We love you Michelle and we are , and myself a great fan of yours. I grew up in Asia and came to America . And was firstly, mesmerized of the great talents such as yours, Jackie Chan, Donnie Yen, Jet Li, and many more actors and actresses from East Asia. So full of talents and courage to break the curtain of action movies into Hollywood. With your great passion, emotions, talent, skill, and humbleness. That's what makes you a great icon and an actress. Long live and God bless always to you. What a great contribution to the arts of movies and martial arts.. I love Malaysia 🇲🇾

The best thing a movie can have is relatability through it's message, and this movie had many perspectives from people of different age, gender, mindset, etc. to relate to. I feel like this movie helped answer questions and feelings for people that couldn't be expressed through words or even thoughts, maybe not directly, but maybe it gave someone their own interpretation and understanding of their problems or feelings through the script and movie structure that may be overwhelming due to lack of expression or different perspective. Well at least that's what it did for me. It feels so nice to finally watch a film that feels so human and full of passion and purpose that grounds you in reality under all of the overwhelming mess of overthinking and worrying about things and possibilities that will never affect you or don't matter as much as you think they do and overlooking what really matters that's right in front of you. (at least in this universe lmao)

So ive been a professional filmaker for 12 years. And honestly this film has reignited my passion for film making. After years of the inudustry feeling stale, unorrignal, and just plain boring. Along comes this film. Knowing the technical steps that went into the filming of this. The fact that it was shot in 38 days in primarily one location is absolutely mind blowing. This film proved that you dont need a billion dollar studio or budget to make an oscar winning, thought provoking orriginal masterpeice. This film does every aspect of film making To an absolute expert level.

I have never had any real difficulties with my parents, I have never had any real difficulties accepting myself or being accepted, I have never had any real difficulties with accepting (as much as I humanly can) the vastness of reality and my own relative unimportance in the face of the everything, of the too-much... and this movie still struck some of the deepest emotional chords with me, on multiple levels. Simply a fantastic work.

i saw this movie with my boyfriend last Sunday. We laughed, we cried, and we were perplexed by the absurdity and excited by the amazingly choreographed action scenes. It made me call my mom and tell her I loved her. I loved the Chinese-speaking parts (I would've been happy if the whole movie was in Chinese). The art direction is amazing. The cast is amazing, and the references are amazing. I'm so happy I saw it in the theater.
