18:47 This happened in the last 30 days: helping a friend buy a car at carmax and discovered one he liked however the entire side had been poorly repaired and painted store manager said they’d fix it before my friend purchased. Several weeks go by and they call him up to come inspect/purchase car. Upon inspection it looked as though the car had received a mild detail to “correct “ the paint (ignoring the very thick amount of body filler underneath paint). We point this out to sales person and again they wouldn’t stand by the obvious body work. At this point they transferred in a different identical car free of charge (that’s right, no transfer fee) and unfortunately it was discovered that this car had an incredible amount of mold growth inside from being wet (flood car?) . Mold was completely cleaned out but they forgot about the seat belts coiled in their holders. This 2nd car was rejected by my friend. A 3rd car was transferred in (no fee again) and this one had the entire left side re-painted with significant left side door repairs that were poorly done. Friend rejected that one too. Carmax was trying to make good but it is apparently obvious that they are having a lot of trouble getting quality cars right now. Buyer beware.

I was happy with the price of a new vehicle we bought from carmax in January 2021. Straightforward price, no dealer added options. We saw the vehicle early in day, told salesperson we'd be back in a few hours with a cashier's check.. Came back and everything was ready, was in and out in 45 minutes. I was impressed.

In October I went to Car Max in Pensacola to look for a vehicle. I previously sold 2 cars to them at 2 locations and was very happy with that process. I also had been on the lots before and saw very nice looking vehicles. On this trip almost ever car had body damage, burns on the seats, and extremely dirty interiors. I test drove an MDX listed for $43,000 it drove fine but the body was damaged in 3 spots. The cargo area and back seat had straw littering the area and the Carmax sticker was placed upside down on the window. I talked to the MGR he blamed it on lack of help. This was sad since I always liked them.

Shopping recently at Carmax (Oregon, March 2022) I’ve found a significant amount of cars on the lot with body damage repaired cheaply with poor paint quality and an unethical amount of body filler being used. This has not been always been a case there as I’ve purchased 2 cars there in the past. Carmax refuses to warranty the very obvious prior damage on their otherwise great warranty program. I think that Carmax has dramatically lowered their standards recently due to supply shortage. Also - these cars with body damage ALL had clean carfax’s showing that they had not been in accidents. Do not trust the carfax because a car can be repaired without going through insurance and it will never show up on a carfax.

Thank you! I was considering CarMax at first, because I love the idea of being able to drive it for a while and then return it if I don't like it. However, If the person who owned it or drove it before me was not respectful of it, then it's probable that someone who is test driving it for a few weeks dinged it up and then returned it. I think I will look around at the warranties and offerings of other dealerships as well. I am not going to know after test driving an automobile for 10 minutes whether it's going to be something that will be a good fit for me long-term.

My daughter and I went to Carmax in Loveland CO. The parking lot is not fenced off from the inventory. We could just walk over and see the cars. Overall is was a pretty painless experience. She paid cash and we didn’t tell them that until after the deal was made. No haggle, and the price could have been a little more than what she would have paid, but a Prius in Colorado is still much in demand so we felt lucky. So far the car’s been great.

Sadly they take advantage of those with poor credit a lot of vehicle with high miles at high non negotiable pricing. Their financing is usually pretty bad too the interest rates are pretty high. I do know Carmax has been popped a few times for selling vehicles that have recalls or existing damage or in need of serious drivetrain repair work.

I bought a car from carmax a few years ago. The interest rate was not great, but I did refinance it with my credit union not long after for half the rate. The process was pretty easy, I don't mind the price. The whole point is for convenience, and you just try to find the best price possible. Or you can try and haggle at a dealership. They negotiate with thousands of people, so the chances of a random person walking in and suddenly being able to out negotiate the dealers is not likely. The car I got was great, and the only issue was the ac going out, but I got a nice rental from them, and they fixed it quickly. There are no issues from Carmax for me.

Because they are buying up all the good used cars from the public arena to keep the prices sky high. They are in cahootz with big stealerships (all owned by same globalist corporations) to keep people hopping. Either buy the overpriced used one or buy an even more insanely priced new one. These greedy corporate psychopaths study us and they know the public will buy all used and put the new stealerships out of business if they don't take over the used market as well. And they cleverly do it in such a way as to make you think these are separate companies......😉

That's what I said too until I realized they are siphoning up all the good used cars and jacking up prices. The local stealerships advertise lower "bait prices" that are not the real price. Once you add on their markups and BS fees the price is close to what Carmax is asking, plus usually no warranty at the stealerships. IF a good deal pops up at the local Mom N Pop side of the road used car joint, it gets POUNCED ON before I can tie my shoe laces. Very very frustrating and infuriating. They have all their bases covered to keep us hopping and in debt to our eyeballs.

A few notes: 1) The transfer fees you mentioned are probably good for a dealer in the center of the country, but the fees get outrageous if you live out west and you're looking at cars back east. In Las Vegas, if you want a car from anywhere in the eastern time zone, the fee will run from $1,600 to $1,900. From the central time zone, it will be $1,000 to $1,300. From the pacific northwest, maybe $600 to $800. So, you really only have access to a fraction of a national network to get any kind of reasonable cost. 2) I don't, and won't answer any of the standard questions designed to "help" the sales person identify what I can afford. I know what I can afford. I also know that the best salesperson at any car dealer is the finance guy. They don't care what car you can afford, they care what payment you can afford. Those are two completely different things. The add-ons are far more profitable than the cars themselves. I'm not going to give them one tiny bit of help in their attempt to extract the maximum profit from me. I don't care what the sales person needs. I only care what I need and what I want. 3) My local CarMax dealers do indeed have the structure designed to funnel you to the sales person, but the lots are not behind a high fence. If you can step over a 1 foot high barrier, you can get directly on to the lot and look around. You know what makes the sales people go berserk and chase you down? When you start looking at the newly arrived cars that have not yet been cosmetically spruced up, so that you can see what kind of condition they were in when they arrived. That in turn tells you a lot about how they were cared for by the previous owners. The CarMax guys will throw you off the lot if you try to inspect those cars too closely. That tells me something.

1: Not everyone is worried about budget and are willing to pay top dollar to get the very specific vehicle they are looking for. The transfer option is not necessarily a feature for those looking to save money. It's for people who know what they want and aren't afraid to spend the money to get it. 2: Your sales person is the person that's going to run your financials. And they need to know certain things to get the application filled out. Not answering their questions only hurts you, not them. Are they supposed to guess your annual income and length of employment? Not answering questions doesn't make any sense. These are things the financer need to know, or no loan. 3: The fact the CarMax puts their cars through a reconditioning process is not a bad thing. It's a good thing. They are fixing any issues before it goes on the lot. Of course they wouldn't want you looking at them because they aren't even ready for the lot yet. Why would they want to waste time on something that won't lead to a sale that day? Honestly I don't even know why you'd be looking at cars at CarMax. If you know what you can afford, are mechanically inclined, and want to haggle price, you'd be better off shopping a traditional dealership. CarMax isn't for everyone.
@ednafronkelbarger8601
@ednafronkelbarger8601 2 жыл бұрын
@@theNebrAlien (1) "not everyone is worried about budget" equals roughly 0.2% of the possible CarMax buyers. The other 99.8% care a lot about the budget (2) The sales person doesn't need to do a single thing with the financials until a car has been chosen. The sales person is most definitely not the last person in the chain, and not the person who is going to try to load up the sale with high-margin extras, based on whatever the sales person squeezes out of you as far as what you are prepared to spend. Once again, what car you can afford and what payment you can afford are two different things. The goal of the finance guy is for that payment to include as little car and as much high-margin extras as possible. . I don't need anyone to tell me what I can afford, because I know roughly 25.0000 times as much about finance as any car salesperson on the planet. Finance is my area of expertise. Sales is your area. (3) You missed the point. It's not about reconditioning, it's bout what the pre-reconditioned vehicle tells you about how the previous owner took care of the car. Which CarMax most definitely does not want customers to know.

I don't get #2. I work in sales and my job is to help find what you want to buy. You're budget is none of my business if you refuse to surrender information. I let the customer bring up their budget, I never ask for it. It's up to the customer to decide at the end if they can or can't afford what they've chosen to purchase. I do very well for myself!
@theNebrAlien
@theNebrAlien 2 жыл бұрын
On #2: What sales position are you working that you haven't run into people who don't know what they can afford? All too common in automotive and housing markets where someone doesn't realize how much money it's going to cost them per month for something they "think" they can afford. Not knowing a customers budget can kill the deal in Automotive and Home sales. Getting a customers budget is pretty standard practice in big ticket sales. This isn't a couch they're buying.

Question; I purchased a car from Carmax 10 days ago .. The wheel 🛞 liner came off on the front passenger’s side. According to receptionist at the service repair office said it’s not covered by my warranty… it cost me $300 at Toyota to replace. 2 days ago I notice the bumper paint doesn’t match the rest of my car. I’m embarrassed for noticing so late but I’m frustrated with Carmax for not correcting it before it was considered fully inspected and ok to sell. @theNebrAlien
@theNebrAlien 2 жыл бұрын
If you don't like the answer you got from your local branch, escalate your concerns to the corporate office... However, when buying a used car, previous damage / accidents will pass their inspection. As long as the damage was repaired. So even if the paint isn't an exact match it will still pass. Their warranty is geared more towards major mechanical issues (like transmission or engine failure). But, I feel like they should have covered your wheel liner issue being that it was only 10 days since purchase. They do have a 30 day money back guarantee. If it were me, I would have returned the car instead of paying the $300 to get the liner repaired. They may have been more open to repairing your car if you were standing in the lobby with keys in hand ready to return the car they were unwilling to fix.

Carmax, like any business, has to make a profit to stay in business. I bought a preowned 2015 Jeep Wrangler in July 2022. It was in like new condition inside and out. I’ve previously owned 2 Jeeps and had recently disposed of my antique 1997 Wrangler TJ. Buying any used Wrangler is risky. They absolutely require a through inspection by a qualified mechanic BEFORE you commit to buying the Jeep. I had a lengthly list of criteria any Jeep I would consider purchasing. I’d already checked out more than 500 Jeeps on line. Then this Jeep popped up at a local Carmax. I’d heard the name Carmax but knew virtually nothing about them. This is my experience with Carmax. I’m retired and financially comfortable. First issue. I was told the advertised 24 hour test drive had been rescinded. I was told I could have a 24 minute test drive. I drove the Jeep to a near by parking lot and did an inspection of the vehicle. I confirmed their 30 day return policy was in force. That’s a nice benefit and the only reason I ended up buying the Jeep. I downloaded the original window sticker. It originally listed for $32,450.00. Carmax price was $29,995.00. Wrangler’s hold their value but not that well. The Jeep was overpriced by about $4000. I checked several sources for my trade in vehicles value. It ranged from $13,000-$18,000. I was looking for $15,000. Carmax offered $5,000. I should have walked away, and would have, except the Jeep they had was the only Jeep I’d found that met every one of my criteria. Based on the condition of their Jeep and it’s options I decided to write a check for their asking price. I kept my trade in vehicle and disposed of it myself. A year later I’m completely satisfied with the Wrangler I bought. It was and is a quality vehicle. It is probably worth what I paid for it. As admitted in this video Carmax over charges for their vehicles and under values trade vehicles. That’s how they make profit., Carmax 30 day return policy is the best benefit they offer and incentive for doing business with them.

Thanks so much for this great resource, big guy. I hope you do more CarMax videos since there can never be too much consumer info regarding car buying. I was was wondering a couple of things...what if your sales associate just rubs you the wrong way? Can you choose someone else? And what is required from the customer for a 24 hour test drive? I would definitely need that in order to have my regular mechanic evaluate the car's worthiness.
@theNebrAlien
@theNebrAlien 2 жыл бұрын
You can switch. You can do it the less obvious way by rescheduling and calling in to speak to a sales manager, then asking for a new sales person over the phone. Or the more obvious way by asking your current sales associate to go get a sales manager and then asking them on the spot. But you can definitely swap for something better suited to your personality. A 24 hour test drive is a little more comprehensive, so they will qualify you as a legitimate buyer before letting you take it. But even after you decide to buy you are given plenty of time to return the car no questions asked. ( So long as you don't cause damage or rack up a bunch of miles). It's pretty much a 30 day test drive

How open are they with outside mechanic shops doing work on your car? I have a trusted mechanic I used on my 03 accord who is amazing. Or even better, could I take it to Honda and have them do a full inspection and fix anything they see that needs to be done? Would that be covered? Is it reimbursement basis?
@theNebrAlien
@theNebrAlien 2 жыл бұрын
For general maintenance, I don't believe it matters, But they are kind of like health insurance when it comes to warranty work. The mechanics doing the work have to be "in network" with the CarMax mechanic shop being the preferred provider. You would have to read up on the warranty for specific details, because I don't believe they will approve any mechanic shop outside of their network to do warranty work. Also, I'm not sure how to go about reimbursement (or if they do it at all). They want you to take it where they already have a relationship / billing set up. The process will always go "report issue to CarMax, have approved vendor inspect issue and send to CarMax for approval, then CarMax decides on whether or not it is a coverable issue based on shops findings." They most likely won't reimburse for a scenario where you got repairs done without getting them approved through CarMax first.

Question, I’m already pre approved and plan on putting 1500-2000$ on a car that’s roughly 15000-18000. What fees would I have to pay upfront or how much should I plan on bringing with me? Is the down payment enough or how much extra would I need?

It's been a while since I've been there things will definitely be different now with used cars in such high demand, but 1500 should be plenty to go in with. I'm not sure what, if any, fee's they would have that would come as a surprise. Just say "I have 1500 to spend, no more than that."

Great video with excellent information. I beg to differ in the contention that Carmax doesn’t offer good interest rates to good credit customers. I bought a 2018!Lexus GX 460 in December 2021 with 42,000 miles for $42,000 and I put $10,000 down. My interest rate for a 60 month loan was 2.95%. Two credit unions I use couldn’t match that. This is a follow up: You don't need to respond these are just some things that could be put in another video. Is insurance a state by state issue? Usually you have thirty days to transfer or add a new car if you have a policy. Does carmax insure the car for the day or is it like a rental and how about the thirty day for insurance. Do you take in a certificate or just acknowledge the risk is the purchaser. If you only have liability and pay cash is the liability for damage to carmax? For that matter if you pay cash do you get thirty day return and they give you a check or credit card return?

During the 24 hour test drive you can and should take it to your favorite mechanic. CarMax won't allow any work to be done on the vehicle, but it's good getting an opinion from a trusted mechanic. If your mechanic finds something wrong the best you can do is report it to CarMax to have it fixed (by CarMax) before you make the decision to buy it.

This left out a large part of the car max experience. You can't just call a car max location. Its very automated and they route you to a corporate location who doesn't know specifics on the car and calling a dealership is not easy. Smaller dealerships have better customer service .Why should someone have to go into the store just to ask a question, once you got ahold the employees themselves were nice , they don't make up how the corporate process works.

I live in Las Vegas but am domiciled in South Dakota. I use a mail fordwarding service company up there,- both of my vehicles are registered along with my banking, voting, medical etc. etc up in SD. (I travel a lot around the country with my RV - thats why I am domiciled in SD) The people up in SD tell me that if I let Carmax register the car, they will use Nevada as my home (where the car will be delivered), then I am told I will then have to pay an extra fee to register the car in SD. I will pay cash for the car to Carmax,(cashiers check), so thats not a problem. The people in SD tell me this happens all the time: people buy a car in another state, they are told by the dealer that the car will be registered properly, only to find out that there is an additional fee to be paid to the state of SD, when they try to register it in SD. So the question remains: will Carmax deliver the car to my Las Vegas address, get paid with a registered check and let me assume the responsibility to register the car in SD?
