I LOVE GEEEEEESE!!!!! Things I learned from having geese: --Goslings love to chew..on everything --They don't care about rain, they'll stand in it all day long --If a gander is getting aggressive, take his neck and push it to the ground (make him submissive to you) --They are great at alerting you when someone/something is on your property --Watch out when they try to wack you with the bony part of their wings --They are so warm and soft and great to hug --Make sure they always have access to fresh water to drink

Hi Leah, maybe you can help me, but I have a male and female, they are about 5 weeks old, actually I think he is a week older, anyhow about 2 weeks of age I started noticing that she was pecking at his feathers and eating them,,,, so I’ve had to separate her since because it’s gotten worse.... and now that she’s getting bigger she really digs in there and he screams in pain. I have them out grazing all day and if I can’t watch them like I said I have her in her own coop... they have their own water bowls, food bowls,, always have... sufficient space,,, and she is mean to our chickens too... she bites their necks so hard I’m afraid she’s gonna kill them,,, they all steer clear of her and absolutely love him.... but he still cries to be around her,, it’s so bizarre..... I’ve given non medicated chicken grower, mealworms, oyster shells, and they graze like I said... just now I had to put them in this huge horse water tub but I put a gate so she can’t hurt him and they cried and cried so I gave in and put her with him and the first thing she did was bite him so hard I could feel his pain.... and she swallows his feathers.... help me!!! Please 😫

@@jtoddjb I didn't solve this, she just grew out of it. I noticed when I started leaving them outside day/night in the coop she gradually stopped. But turns out they are both females! Those silly geese!! But she is definitely still the boss, the whole flock moves out of her way still to this day, even our rooster. She is no longer mean to them and actually it's the other female, the one she bullied, that turned out to be mean to the others.
@noahriding5780
@noahriding5780 Жыл бұрын
@@aprilrain4296 With most poultry when they bully one of the others you have to temporarily separate them until the injured bird heals up. When its healed up then you re-introduce. It doesn't always stop the behavior. But part of why this behavior occurs isn't just about the behavior but about PERCEIVED WEAKNESS. Chickens do it, especially. And with chickens as long as a bird is wounded it will get 'pecked on' (picked on). (get it?) So when you reintroduce it, it needs to look healed up to not look weak. People may have to do this 1 to 3 times with some poultry species. Another trick is to reintroduce a smaller bird than the one picked on that's healthy or other birds and this resets the pecking order. If the smaller bird is faster also that will help on the reset. HOWEVER... it is a small chance also that the new birds may also pick on an injured bird so you have to watch for this. But this may work. This is also why people are fast to separate injured poultry from the others. You can try things to get things to work.

I legit just went thru this with my first pair- a pair of babies from the same clutch. The male would almost "mouth" the feathers on the female's back, sometimes pulling it (but mostly just... running it through his beak and making it SOGGY). They seem to have grown out of it all on their own so, nothing to contribute, really lol 🤷

Geese won't eat bugs or snakes or frogs. I guess you missed that. They are really strictly grass eaters. And they look at you with disdain if you try to get them to eat grain or something else. We have had to force ours to eat corn, and they are now OK with that but they are resentful. (In winter). Look up the backyard chickens forum on geese and you will hear universal stories of disgusted geese acting like we are trying to kill them by offering them something different. About 20 years ago my wife and I bought a piece of land and built a home on it. We have planted many small berry plants and a few fruit and nut trees. Our kids wanted to 'really' farm and raise animals. Both my wife and I were working full time and told them no. The youngest daughter started helping a neighbor with animals (chickens, beef cattle and hogs) and it didn't take long for her to realize how much work it is to properly care for animals. She'd been helping for about six months when we had a significant storm, she looked at me as if I was crazy when I asked when she was going over to help. Previously I had stated on your channel that being called a farmer is for me a compliment and to which I typically respond "Thanks, but I don't work that hard." Please keep up the great videos!

Restaurant ( Butchers and Catering companies) scraps are also EXCELLENT! Even in the current year and 2020, there are scraps to be found. Before the current global sh@t show my Flock kibble cost ( for around 25-35 chickens and now 9 Moscovys) about $25/month. With the lockdowns/ shutdowns it went to about $25/week. Years ago, a lot of the restaurants were getting in trouble for that. Even if they knew it would go to pigs. i worked at an army mess hall and saw the huge amounts of leaves and produce waste and they told me I wasn't allowed to take scraps home. They said it was a law.

@@whisperingsage Those laws have been relaxed/repealed in many places. The details will need to be researched in each locale but the absurdity of the situation and the sheer quantity of the waste just got to be too much to ignore. Generally you need to be able to pick the produce up inside a specific time window on the day it is pulled, which often means every single day and the grocer will want you to take everything they pull every day which for even an average sized chain supermarket outlet can be more than most people can easily handle (think hundreds of pounds of mixed produce).

She said that I was born and lived on a farm in Northern Ireland as a child and she told me how I used to throw sticks at the guard geese we had, and then when they chased me, I would run squealing into the kitchen and shut the bottom half of the split door. (I don't know what the actual name of those split doors is, but we always called them stable doors) and outside the geese would flap their wings and honk really loudly and I would giggle and totally enjoy it. She said I was an absolute tearaway back then, and more like a little boy, than a dainty little girl, lol. Decades later, nothings changed! Lol. Good times! God bless you and all those you know and love.

That name is truth in advertising, my guy. We have a small inner-city flock of chickens - 14 hens with 2 unexpected roosters (they came with Oz), and 1 guard goose, Ozzie! 💘 I love him more than I ever expected, and I'm a committed dog person. He's still very young, not yet a year old, and so still feeling his oats... Watching him have a dominance standoff with my husband is hilarious! To me, anyway. And trust me, I'm sure that my neighbors were thrilled that I was out late last night, not getting home until after 10pm, when Oz went off like the proverbial burglar alarm upon seeing me through the window of the still-dark house. Yes, I was trying to sneak in without being seen by the goose until I was ready to go out to put him and the idiot roosters (who've taken to trying to perch on TOP of the hen coop at bedtime. No dice boys, we have owls, raccoons, possums, and stray cats who would love to eat you.) to bed in their batchelor quarters, those 3 together. They're brothers - all 3 raised together. They fight like brothers sometimes, but then you turn around and see a rooster preening a goose, and the world is just a better place. I ❤my yard dragon!

Growing up, we had two toulouse geese (both females) and they truly awesome pets. They were notorious bullies for our cats but they would knock on the back door for bread. They were so good natured and only bit one person (my sister's friend) and I felt compelled to give them an extra piece of bread in recognition. I love watching your videos because it reminds me of my feathered friends, now long departed.

Interesting that you say geese are more sustainable than chickens. I haven't kept geese before (maybe I'll try it now), but I have raised chickens, turkeys and ducks. I've always found the chickens to be the most sustainable on my small farm. Mine have access to pasture and also woodland during the spring/summer. They hardly touch their feed during the warm months. The yolks develop a deep gold color and the taste is AMAZING. I credit the flavor of the eggs to the chickens being allowed to have a natural omnivore diet. Anyway, love your channel. Keep the good content coming!

Also when it comes to holding a goose, as goes for a lot of poultry. If you hold them on their back. They calm down and are also easier to handle! But it also depends on the character of the goose in question. I really loved this video! Geese are my favourite animals they're just so goofy!
@WobblesandBean
@WobblesandBean 3 жыл бұрын
You should never hold them that way for very long though, as it's difficult for them to breathe in that position. That's WHY they calm down, they're trying not to suffocate.
