I really like watching your "serious" videos like this instead of other styles of videos. This kind of content makes your channel stand out compared to other female KZbinrs! You're very professional when you talk intelligently without any cursing words, and this makes the audiences like me enjoy and want to keep watching your videos without skipping any seconds. Love your energy and honesty, especially around POC being paid less than their white counterparts. It's a massive issue in the UK too and more wage transparency will help improve this disparity. Thank you for making this content and helping educate other POC on how to play the game.

As a graduate starting out in the tech industry, this is so important to learn! I accepted a role with low salary ("Non-Negotiable") at a big company awhile ago. This week I told them I am opting out as the salary was fixed for roughly a year. Thank you for this video and for encouraging us women to negotiate! :)

Hi Chloe! Oh wow - that’s huge! Happy for you to stand your ground. A lot of first jobs are said to be non negotiable, but that’s just simply not true or it’s not a job ladder the company wants to invest in for long-term talent. I’m happy for you making a courageous choice! Wishing you all the best in your career!!!

@@chloeshih Thank you so much Chloe! I tried negotiating before accepting the offer but was slapped with a "non-negotiable" and "all graduates receive the same pay". Now I know better to counter argue that we all come with different skillsets, experience and ambition - therefore it would be unfair to be paid the same. Love your channel and energy, best of luck for your growth and have a wonderful birthday! 💛🥰🥳

Chloe, I love your videos so much! They are incredibly informative, insightful, and SO helpful! Thank you Chloe! I had an interview yesterday with Salesforce and TOTALLY stumbled on the salary question because they asked me first. I gave a number (that they said fit their budget) but after some thought, I feel I can aim for higher. I like the tactic "I don't have a number in mind right now, what is your budget?" approach. If I make to the offer round, I will use these negotiation tips.

Ahh yeah it’s always such a trap. :( I’ve had recruiters hustle me hard and I honestly just say “I haven’t had a chance to think through the compensation piece, but I’m definitely looking for something very competitive.” Then boomerang the question back. If pushed again, I say “I don’t think sharing a number right now is a productive use of our time.” And then boomerang again. It’s okay if you have a lower number in the first call. During the offer stage, you should have a chance to push it back up!!

These are some solid tactical tips! I've often heard or read about negotiating from a strategic angle, like what identifying what you're trying to achieve. But this is the first time I've heard the actual tactics of negotiating, which is very eye-opening. One thing I do wonder for myself, though, if these negotiation tactics also work at a traditional non-tech company. They may not be as familiar with these hardball tactics that tech candidates are used to at FAANG companies and just think that you're being rude. (But that might also be my internalizing of the stigma that Asians should just put our heads down and not make waves.)
@chloeshih
@chloeshih 3 жыл бұрын
I actually got most of the tactics from Never Split the Difference (Chris Voss)! His real-world examples were used to negotiate your rent, your salary (in law, consulting, or finance), and hostage situations (which I hope none of us have to experience). Unfortunately, I don't know anything about traditional companies, but nationwide numbers do say that 70% of managers do expect a negotiation conversation when talking about salary. More often than not, negotiating is expected, but we just didn't know. :/ Re: stigma that Asians should put our heads down - UGH I know. I felt horrible in my first few attempts to negotiate years ago. I felt so out of character and misaligned, but I had to have a bunch of people knock it in me that only I can own my compensation. It's truly a tough paradigm shift!

So glad you made this, Chloe! I find I have to convince my own PMs to negotiate their salaries because they are so. hesitant and I know it will negatively affect them later in their careers if they don't. There is such a strong confidence and knowledge gap between high and lower earners on the same team and that is not why people should have pay disparity. It should be based on their market value, skills and impact.
@chloeshih
@chloeshih 3 жыл бұрын
That's honestly so great that you intentionally make sure your PMs negotiate their salaries! Salaries and comp packages are really still not super transparent and it's hard to know when you're being undervalued. Super big knowledge gap! :< What you're doing is awesome though ~ They're lucky to be on your team!

This video is so helpful to me. I started my first tech role last year and was grossly underpaid, denied a signing bonus, brought in 4 levels below where people of similar experience and education were. I had no one in my life that worked in tech to ask what to expect. This video will help a lot of people transitioning into tech to advocate for themselves.

Hi Chloe. Can you do a video dedicated to whether the candidate should disclose their current salary to the hiring recruiter if they ask this? I've read many posts where it's usually not recommended because the hiring recruiter will base line you based on what you are getting paid. It's also recommended that you should avoid disclosing it especially if your already getting under paid below the current market rate. However, on the flipside, what if you are getting paid what your worth according to the market rate and you are reasonably satisfied with your current pay? Shouldn't you in this case disclose your salary because then the recruiter will try to pay more than what your currently getting paid? I'm concerned that if you avoid disclosing it, then it may influence the recruiter into perceiving that you are getting underpaid below the market rate for your industry and will therefore artificially base line you from that response. I can understand why you shouldn't disclose it if you are underpaid, but what if you aren't? Should you just avoid answering this question at all costs? PLEASE SHED SOME LIGHT ON THIS TOPIC!

The job description said Two ranges, and recruiter gave me a range right off the bat that included the higher end of that…and I said “the higher end of that is within my range”… they also said they’d like to keep it competitive and like to keep it at the top of that range … should I still try and negotiate if they try to “keep it competitive” along the higher Range that we spoke of ? Bc they said they wanted to make sure in the first call we talk about it so we don’t waste time

Hi Eliza!! Omg thank you!! I realize there aren’t many negotiation videos out there for tech in this way. The advice I’ve seen is pretty generic, which is fair given how nuanced these things are. It took me dozens of hours of revisions to get this down into a youtube-friendly video and I took out a lot of edge cases and details 😔 I’m glad that it hits the nail overall!!!

This is my first comment on KZbin. I want to say thank you for all the suggestions for salary negotiation. I am also an Asian worked in the US and now living and getting to offer negotiation stage in Germany. Salary negotiation is so difficult here but I am taking notes from you. Hopefully this can work in the upcoming weeks. THANK YOU AGAIN. YOU ARE AWESOME & HELPFUL!

Word of advice: don’t give the first number. If they push, you can offer an observation about the range you’ve researched, but don’t give a number that says “if you pay me this, I’ll be satisfied and won’t negotiate”. Aim for top quartile or half of the band for the role and level you are targeting, and don’t settle. You got this.
@chloeshih

This video was so inspiring! I just began my career a few months ago and accepted a pretty low salary because I didn't know any better. At the time, I thought it was good enough. Can the same negotiation tactics be used if you have little experience? I feel like it would be hard for me to justify a higher pay with less experience.
@chloeshih
@chloeshih 3 жыл бұрын
hi dalyssa! congrats on the new career move! and yes of course - even if you're new to the industry, you should definitely negotiate. as long as you did well in your interviews and know that your'e at the top of the candidate pool for the role, the company is incentivized to hire you. it's way more common for software engineers to negotiate vs non-tech verticals, but that shouldn't stop the rest of us from negotiating.

Hi Chloe, I recently started as a product manager at a small/mid size software company (my first job). The decision was not easy, since the salary is rather low, but I know the people are nice, I will have a lot of responsibility and the company is growing fast. The other option would have been to go to a large company with a significantly higher salary. Do you think that was a good decision, from a career and salary perspective?

Hey Chloe! Great video. I'm a big fan! I actually have a friend who knows you IRL from CKI in Socal. I was wondering if you had any tips on when you already gave them a number in the first interview? Also I think I would prefer negotiating over email, but I am afraid they'll take the offer away if I give such a high anchor number.

Chloe! Your videos are awesome. Can you share how you build relationships with your mentors?
@chloeshih
@chloeshih 2 жыл бұрын
Ah this is complicated, but: 1. I normally find them organically (through work or friends of friends) 2. I chat with them with I have a very clear objective and I need their tactical advice on it 3. Once I go through the challenge, I execute on their advice immediately and let them know how it was for me and what the result was. Mentors really want to know if the time they invested in me has meant anything. 4. I try to keep strong values for the long-term game in my life and show gratitude to them even when they weren't there to directly coach me through a process. I think I keep my mentors and the advice they give me in a place where it has compounding effects that I can apply in other areas of my life. 5. I also randomly send them messages of things that remind me of them - like a podcast, a video, or meme, etc. These are just light-weight ways to engage with them without always asking for help.
