Regularity is your friend. Learn the expectations of lenders and the key dates in their cycle. I discovered by accident that if I paid a credit card on say the 28th of a month, then the 3rd of the second month following, the lender marked that down as no payment in that middle month. Even though one payment was early and the next easily on time. It was just there was no payment in the calendar month. Now I know and use their key dates regardless of when I may have or receive funds. If the due date is the 15th I make the payment on the 10 every single month like clockwork.

One of my 1st credit card limits was $9,000 😳 I was 18 and that's crazy. Since working on becoming debt free (paying off all consumer debt), my score has shot up 🚀 it's excellent at a time I consider it the least (my focus is more on building wealth in savings, investments, etc) I agree that you need to check that report/score, assess what it means to you, and make changes. This is helpful!

This- if you have the privilege of access. My parents made me an authorized user on their card when I went to college, in case of emergencies, and now my credit report says i've been using credit responsibly since I was 2 years old because that's when they opened the account. Credit scores basically only measure how much access to wealth you have.

The FICO score is incredibly tilted in favor of financial institutions. It's way too complex to track what activities raise/lower your score assuming you aren't missing payments or running bills to your spending limits. I've had my score raise or lower by dozens of points in a single month where nothing in particular was happening.

It's what end up on your upcoming statement that could be reported as irresponsible. Say your statement is on 27 th of every month, owing that $600 on 27th is then irresponsible because then your utilization is high. Your utilization before your statement they don't see! So if you spend say $600 on 5th but pay balance in full, and say you owe $ 90 of your $1,000 limit only on 27th, so your utilization is reported as 9%

I work in credit and one thing that I see a lot of people do is close out accounts and see a credit score drop. The people with some of the best credit only have one or 2 accounts with balances, but have seasoned credit lines with no balance. I think the system needs to be revised so that people can close out accounts without hurting their score, but in the meantime I recommend to never close out credit accounts that don’t have high fees to avoid the credit erasure. Also, it’s counter intuitive, but sometimes making payments toward old collection/charge off accounts can hurt people’s credit because it turns it into a recent derogatory account. The best and most useful thing that I do personally is to set up auto draft of the minimum payment on all my credit accounts so that just in case I forget to pay it off one month at least the minimum payment will have been made. I’ve also avoided paying off my subsidized student loans which are around 3% and are a low balance so that I do not lose my oldest credit account. I’m paying unnecessary interest, but I think it’s a small price to pay knowing how much of an impact having lower credit can make on bigger debts such as mortgages and installment loans.
@risamaeve
@risamaeve 3 жыл бұрын
If you have multiple accounts, closing some doesn't hurt. I'm lowkey into churning and as long as you keep your oldest card open it doesn't really matter. It's only if you have only 1 or 2 cards that closing one really hurts you.

Don’t ever be accidentally late with Kohl’s. I had $30 on my card. It never went to collections, but they refused to forgive the late payment. They waived the $35 late fee, but informed me that they have no grace period. I sent a letter to corporate to request they remove the ding and they replied in a letter telling me they could not erase the ding because then my credit history would be inaccurate. It took me down 40 points that I can’t seem to earn back. I owed them $30 in total and their douchebaggery cost me a year of progress. I googled it, there are thousands of us!

Terrific advice that's not at all limited by income. I'm in my 50s and only learned this year about the 30% rule. With COVID this year, I had to utilize more than 100% of my available credit - ie. using it all, paying it all off more than once a month to oder essentials. I could not get my cc provider to increase the limit despite having a pristine payment history for a few years now. I ended up finding another provider and secured a higher limit card. Between the two now I have significantly decreased my spending to available ratio and this brought my rating from 480 to 600 in - get this - under 4 months! Wish I'd known about this rule decades ago

@@xowdavis In my particular case, paying off my student loans caused my score to drop because they count towards your credit history. They were by far my oldest "accounts" because they were opened when I started college, and I applied for my first credit card after college (because I was scared of them, haha). So you should open at least one other account now if you don't have one already! It's definitely frustrating but still great to have the loans paid off, and your score will increase over time as your accounts get older and you keep making on-time payments. You didn't discuss the most important thing: how to _build_ credit. If your credit isn't good, how can you get the number up? You can't just take out loans or apply for cards to use them and build the credit, so what kinds of things can you do to get it back up? (It's easier to _lose weight_ than to increase the credit score. 😕) I've seen some KZbinrs be sponsored by some companies that boost your credit rating for doing things like paying rent or bills on time, but those seem to be exclusive to the US. 😕

Great video! Yes for beginners keeping utilization below 30% is good. Keeping it 9% or lower is when your more experienced. And credit bureau only see what ends up on your upcoming statement. So if I have $1,000 limit and use $ 900 but pay off that $ 900 one or two days later. But on your statement date, say you owe $90 then utilization is 9% they don't see utilization before the statement.

I have a question on raising my score. I basically treat my credit card like a debit card. I use it just to get points. It is tied to my bank, so every Friday I pay my balance off in full. Oftentimes, my statement says that I owe $0. My credit score has stayed the same for an entire year. Should I stop paying my card off every Friday and only pay my statement balance on the due date? Will that help my score go up?

I know that every card has a window of time where your balance gets reported to the credit builders before the due date, so it can be beneficial to have some amount of credit listed. I would either call them to figure out when exactly that is or experiment with it. For example, if you use more than 15-25% of your limit in a week, pay off that difference weekly but only pay off the full amount every other week.

There are 3 key dates that seem to make a difference: the date the score was pulled by the credit bureau, the closing date of the monthly cycle of my card, and the payment due date. If you had a $1,500 balance on closing date on Wednesday, and the report was pulled on Thursday by the credit bureau, and you paid all that off on Friday, the credit bureau doesn’t know that you paid off your card! They still think you owe $1,500! (Friday payments sometimes are pending until Monday or Tuesday, btw!) I had to track this for about a month (pulled out a couple of statements from previous months to figure out closing dates) and then I made payments strategically on certain days for about 2 more months to finally see a change in the credit score. It took a lot of spreadsheet tracking but for me it was totally worth it, because I really needed to see those wins. If you want to read more about it, google “closing date versus payment due date” and hopefully that gets you some good articles.

I wanted to get a credit card so I can not use it at all but build a credit history (in case I want a loan or a mortgage like ten years from now) but literally even rehab cards or cards designed for people in my exact situation (students wanting first credit card) say I'm ineligible because I have no credit history, then these rejection webpages redirect me to a page saying I should get their credit card to improve my score and oh my god I could scream. I just have to keep not using my paltry maximum overdraft and wait until I'm on a salary at the ripe old age of 29 (if the job market is kind to me after I finally graduate) before I can start building a history :(

Would love a video about waiting for the limitation to pass on debt. I know, no financial expert ever wants to discuss that or advocate for it, but I'd rather that transparency. I have a lot of debt and while I'm willing to get rid of everything else, I have a vehicle that was totaled in an accident (either someone racing or someone trying to pass up another vehicle on a curve. Either way, they slammed headfirst into my little brother, who was driving the vehicle. I didn't have insurance because I was jobless at the time though my mom was going to add me to her insurance the next day on Friday as I'd been pulled over the evening before the accident for a headlight being out. Yeah, very terrible timing for that accident. Hilariously enough, the day after, I got a job offer.). Anywho, I don't make enough to pay for that car (which is about $12,000 and much, much higher than any of the other debts) and another vehicle (my current car, which is paid off, is old and needs so much work, nobody is offering me more than $200 for it and I keep running on a hamster wheel trying to fix everything with it, just for something else to break down. At this point, I might as well have a car note), and also pay for my bills and any other incidentals. So, the debt for the vehicle is almost at the limit for my state and I'm not going to be paying on it. Would like a video on how this might affect someone like me. I'm not looking for crisp, perfect credit. I've managed to get by on 530 this long, it can't get worse than that if I pay off everything else. I'm curious to know if creditors though are forevermore going to be able to see that vehicle. If so, so be it, but just want to know.

Derogatory information can, in most states, remain in your credit file for 7 years. That said, though, if an account is sold to collections, the original account may drop off your file after 7 years but the collection account (which had other derogatory indications that go along with it) can still remain for 7 years. And collectors can usually resell that debt to other collectors, who resell it again, and again, and again. Fluffymiyster @steelerbear is right. I would also add that I was told by a lawyer years ago if you work with a collection agency or respond in any way, in most states the clock on the debt gets reset. Essentially, if your debt gets sold and it’s been 6 1/2 years since the debt has been on your record and you have communicated/indicated responsibility with the new agency, the debt is now 0 years old. There might be more online about this. Good luck!

There are so many random pieces of mail and sketchy looking websites that I don't really know if I should trust any of them to help me try and consolidate my debt? Not gonna lie, that story you told at the beginning about how you got into financial trouble in the first place sounds super sketchy on the bank's part. Marketing credit cards to high schoolers on their lunch break? Yeah, that's definitely not setting them up for bad financial decisions. I wouldn't be surprised if you weren't the only one who got badly burned there. On my part, I had my credit screwed by ROTC demanding I repay my scholarship (on rather questionable grounds, but that's another story) and then sending the debt to collections because *they* sent my mail to the wrong address, causing me to never receive it. I'm currently looking into options for legal redress, but it's difficult because the military is, in general, not beholden to civilian law. I'm improving my credit by otherwise being financially responsible, but word of advice: at least until there's a change in leadership, stay the hell away from the US Air Force. The people currently running the ROTC program are incredibly shitty, and I do not trust the leadership structures that put them in charge. I am far from the only one recently screwed over by them.

They likely use different scoring models. You'll see the same thing happen if you apply for, say, a car, a mortgage, and a credit card all in the same day. It's three different types of industries, so you'll get three different scores--they weigh info in your credit file differently, that's all. The key is to make sure that the info on your credit file is accurate, up-to-date, and as good as possible.

@@BellaMichel Yes, the higher score - especially over 800 gets you better interest rates on car loans and mortgages, or any loan really. In times of high interest rates, this is especially helpful. It can also get you better pricing on things like car insurance, believe it or not. I am in my 50s, score over 800, and have lived and learned everything spoken about in this video. @halimak12
@halimak12 3 жыл бұрын

@thisuniquechica
@thisuniquechica 3 жыл бұрын
The problem seems to be that when you pay off your student loans, those debts will be removed and your total credit limit will go down, right? You’re 23! Try being in your 30’s. We older people can’t go back in time. You’re so early worrying about this that you could try getting a credit card now that would become your oldest card when you finally pay off your student loans in the future. I wish I could go back in time to keep that college card I had. I’m not providing financial advice here as much as highlighting what most of us would do if we could go back in time. Also, for me, I do firmly believe paying off debts and not paying interest is always good, even if it means a lower score. Incidentally, some financial advisers say that we shouldn’t care about our credit score once we become debt free. Most people think that a great score is an asset, and it can be. But for some people, it’s also a responsibility, a super power, that they can’t handle, so it could be more of a liability. If you’re worried about your score because you want to buy a house in the future, you should look into how those loan decisions are made. From what I remember, credit score isn’t the only factor, the dollar amount of debt you have also plays a major role. So, if you pay off student loans, having a good credit score instead of a great score might not be an issue when looking for a mortgage. Again, best to do your research, but hopefully this gets you looking for the strategy for your goals.

If the creditor won't work with you, try contacting the credit bureau (TransUnion, Experian, or Equifax--you should be able to find contact info on their website) to dispute the information. Unless you have emergency medical bills, having credit card debt is never justified. If you have non-medical related debt you are spending beyond your means. That new phone, tv, laptop can wait. I have 4 different credit cards and by using them as debit cards I have never paid a dime in interest.

Chelsea, once you have 7 years of credit, dropping to 6 is not a big deal. Another year will pass soon and you'll be fine. Don't keep paying an annual fee, even $25, for a card you don't use. Also, a card with good payment history will stay on your credit report for 10 years after you close it, so you'll have plenty of time for your current cards to age up before it actually drops off your record completely. Please close that old card.
