I’m reading Emma at the moment, via a free ebook (I prefer paperbacks but free is a win, and it’s handy for squished Tube commuting!). Pride and Prejudice, Northanger Abbey, and Sense and Sensibility, though, are my fave Austen novels. I love her witty observations.

9:40 this cover cured my artistic imposter syndrome

I will be curious to hear your thoughts on Howard’s End. I read A Room with a View this summer and loved it, and Howard’s End is next up for me.

I hope your copy hasn't suffered from the same penciled stampedes that mine has!

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts after reading “Howard’s End” - Forster at the top of his game. For me, it was much more enjoyable than “On Beauty” by Zadie Smith. 📚👀

You're going to get some great new ideas from reading Perfume.

Before you even said anything (while you were referencing the Duce and his punctual trains) I thought, "He looks rather nice today."

I resent objectification 🤣

My December readings are some Nobel literature winners, January as well. I will start the year with some meaningful works, probably 1984, and some great newer works... Sheakspear as well, and, of course, Beckett, I have skipped some of his works, he is just unavoidable...

…we need to find you the Chapman edition of Austen…I suspect it’s widely available where you are, and for short money.

I suspect you will enjoy The Bostonians very much. He has been scolded for being hard on the nascent feminist movement, but he’s tough on everyone here. I think that cover image is meant to evoke Verena, btw.

But Varena is specifically and indisputably red-headed? And that front cover depicts a hardy brunette!

@JoeSpivey02 , quite so, but I will guess that the design editor stopped at "period" and "pretty." 😁

A nice collection of books, except the John Updike, a very overpraised writer. I'm not anti- American literature, but that era is grim. They make Henry James or later writer's like Pynchon shine.

I will disagree about all artist being against new things. It just sounds truthful, but it is not. It is easier to reread and find established authors from the past then go thorugh a lot of content to find a good work, but it does not mean there are not good things or that all that is produced now is bad. This all artists is a generalization, and untrue.

Writer can do a lot of ill, but all conspiracy theories, proclivities, and mistakes aside, some novels or works are just not their best, for so many so obvious reasons... This idealization is just so bad for readers and writers, it does not encourage critical thinking, and it should. The novels should become better, not stagnate with false praise and lack of real critique

Is there anything newly published in France to read this December? Some new trend, beside some really good existing writers... They do come up with something great from times to times

Ok, big mistake. I will finish readings on Hitler and his flawed youth years. Troublesome is the word, along with some other works on prominent criminals, and average workers/average people who became monsters' supporters during WW2.
