The ST1901 movement is not as nicely finished, but it's only a tiny fraction of the price of a Swiss movement and it keeps the time accurately. And it's really nice to look at, too, as long as you're not looking at it under a microscope. I'm quite happy with my Seagull 1963. It gets a lot of wrist time. And I do own a bunch of Omegas and other Swiss made watches.

I have more watches than is rational from Chinese to Swiss and, as long as you buy from better brands, the Chinese pieces will go Toe to Toe, with Swiss pieces at 10x the price. Now, the Chinese do need to up their movement game and then it's not even close. A San Martin with a St2130 would beat any Swiss watch under 5k.

I own the same Seagull 1963 watch. What a watch for $375.00! Yeah I realize the screws are painted blue and not cured, yeah the decoration is not what you would get in a GENUINE Swiss for WAY more money, but look at the movement! Column wheel! works as smooth as butter. And it keeps better time than most of my "Swiss" watches! I own Rolexes, Breitlings, Ulysse Nardin, etc. But this watch is just amazing for the price! Good job Time Teller sticking up for watches that are made well no matter WHERE they come from! If you love watches, you love watches. And they will be done the ol fashioned way....lmao...I'm kidding ..don't ever take screws out of your movement...though u can ask your watch maker too do it when servicing the watch...peace

I love the irony of people commenting on the "crapness" of Chinese-manufactured watches, whilst using their (probably) Chinese-manufactured phone/tablet/computer to do so. Whilst also ignoring the fact that premium, "serious" watch manufacturers like Rolex or Tudor have not been without their own quality control issues. Hell, even my Seamaster 300 isn't that consistent at time keeping, but I know that's a symptom of owning a mechanical watch. Sure, ignorance and perception plays a huge part in some people's comments, but...like, reading and some basic research is a pretty good cure for this, and we're all capable of that, right? Yes, there's an audible tick with each passing second, but it's no louder than any of the more expensive quartz watches on the market and I love the simplicity and non existent branding on the dial. Welcome to the Internet..... The Seagull 1963 Chronograph has a place in watch collecting. Where else can you buy an integrated chronograph ( as opposed to modular), movement for less than $300? The same bias happened post WWII when Japan began making US (and UK) knockoffs. They even created a town in southern Japan named "USA" (pronounced yoosa). lots of tin toys. My first miniature tape player came from Japan in 1960. The US couldnt make those for another 10 years.

my dad has 2 parts to his watch collection: nice watches, and beater watches. he likes to wear a watch no matter what, can't blame him. the only issue is that his job is manual labor, and he basically destroys everything he wears. he used to wear a lot of those huge heavy duty invictas, but once he destroys them they're not worth repairing. so now he buys chinese skagen clones on amazon for as little money as possible, and they pretty much last just as long (maybe a year). so maybe someone like I cannot appreciate high-level chinese watchmaking, but there's always a place for garbage. His other watches pretty much consist of citizen promasters, a tag, some seikos, and some other misc nicer brands, and that's pretty much mirrored in my case since i had to learn about watches from somewhere before youtube.

I have no issue with "Chinese" watches, and really love the 1963, but you seem to have some of your info wrong. Boldr is a Singapore company, but they, like almost all microbrands, actually make their watches in China. Seiko also makes many of their parts in China, and make almost no watches in Japan anymore (short of GS and higher end Seikos). Casio also makes a lot of their parts, and watches, too, I believe, in China. But this is really what the entire industry is doing. Chris Vail of Nth Watches (another microbrand) uses the same Chinese factory to build his Nth Subs that Omega uses to build their casebacks, at least (he posted a picture of the Seamaster casebacks he took while touring the factory reviewing his own watches. So the point is, many, if not most, watch manufactures (including most "Swiss") have at least some parts of their watches, including the movements, made in China. So it is ignorance when "watch snobs" hate on "Chinese" watches, because almost certainly they are wearing a watch made at least partly in China.

Sea-Gull watches are improving minute by minute. The 1963 movement offers complications unavailable from Switzerland for less than £7,000. Buy a mechanical chronograph from Switzerland for around £130 - it is absolutely impossible. The dual axis tourbillon from Sea-Gull is a phenomenal watch. Beautiful movement and with features that you only find on the likes of Richard Mille for a 6 digit sum. I have 5 different Sea-Gull watches and every model has been exceptional value for the workmanship you get. As wage costs rise in China, these watches are an investment in my view. This kind of workmanship will not be available this cheaply for too much longer.

@mrsentencename7334 Жыл бұрын
Listen, i am not an expert and do not even own a seagull..yet. However from my knowledge pretty much non of them are 'genuine' nowadays. However the original manufacturer has given certain factories permission to make them and as long as the movement inside the watch is correct then that's all that really matters. A true vintage version from back in the day will cost a lot (way more than 300) but some of these 'copies' have improvements such as sapphire class and (if you like it) a see through case back, but they do have the original movement. As long as you can verify the movement is real then there isn't a problem. There's always the seagull store if you want to be extra safe but don't think the Ali express version is garbage because I'm pretty certain they also use the original real parts but it does depend where u order from exactly and I'd double check instead of just listening to me.

Most G shocks (beside their High end one which are made in Japan) are made in China and Thailand...

Not all Chinese makers are born equal, there is actually huge diversification within China. For example, you could even find Dufour counterpart like Qin Gan. For the affordable segment, I think Merkur and Vager Hauers offers exceptional watches.

this zi zuan chronograph is a reissue as you know of course. it's movement is an old venus caliber , that it's patent is not pending anymore . most of the chinese makers use copy movements . they do not design anything . they just copy anything. it's cheaper . and i am not talking about the replicas . and you do not have to apologise for getting a chinese watch . you like them, it' s acceptable . others hate them, it's acceptable as well .

I have a stauher watch that is automatic and it being a German like name it’s a Chinese watch and it looks cool and no one can tell it’s Chinese unless I say anything. They work pretty good for the past 5 years. Asian watch makers are pretty good as long as they are not (clones or replicas)

Have you ever come across Titan Watches? They are an Indian Brand.
@phillipmoodie90714 жыл бұрын
@Akhil Raj. I have a solid gold Titan dress watch that I have worn for the last 20 years as my daily Beater to save the wear and test on my 1987 gold Omega Seamaster, that I used to wear 24/7. It is a very plain watch, with a similar appearance to the Omega dress watch. It is totally reliable and looks as good with a suit as the Omega. I bought it in Melbourne Australia when Titan tried to enter the local market. The case is made to the same quality standards as my Omega, which doesn't surprise me because it was priced at the same level. But in India they have models across the entire spectrum. Based only on the experience I have had with my own watch, with it's very accurate time keeping, the top end of the Titan range mirrors Omega standards. Phil.

@@phillipmoodie9071 My Appa (Dad) had an old Titan quartz ..... probably around 1000 Rs ( about 15USD )....worked well for him over 7 years. They do have mechanical watches ....as far as I know they use a miyota movement.

@@akhilraj9412 Nice memories for you. My father who was in the Australian Navy spent a lot of time in India during the 1940s, where he developed a taste for real Indian curry at a time when all Australian dinners consisted of grilled chops with three vegetables. But my Mother used to regularly make a real Indian curry for my Dad, that I learnt to enjoy. Now with so many Indian students in Australia the CBD is smothered with Indian eating houses. And the locals really enjoy it. But back to watches. Before I bought my current Titan I bought a 1960 vintage gold ladies Titan watch in an antique shop. It was made in Switzerland and carried the logo used by the Indian company, but in spite of intensive searching I cannot find a link between the two businesses. But from time to time you will find the Swiss made Titan watches for sale on eBay. But they all seem to be pre-1960. I have been looking because they were very popular in Australia when I was a teenager, hoping for a watch for my 21st. Phil

I like the seagul 1963 and is probably the quintessential Chinese watch but wont buy one for a single reason. The handsets are mismatched and once noticed, it cant be unseen. Its a poor design choice to use one subdial with a counterbalance and the other without. they also do subdials with counterbalances on both sides from other factories ( there are about 50 factories making seagul 1963 ) which mismatches with the main handset. theres no consistency with the handset from any of the factories which cheapens the watch IMO. The original handset had no counterbalance on both subdials and this made the original version probably the best from a design perspective but no factory seems to do it this way any longer which is a shame.

I think the dislike of Chinese watches come from the fact that a lot of name brands outsourced to China to increase their profits only to wind up subsidizing knock-offs, counterfeits, and copies. It's not just a quality thing, it is the fact that Chinese watches are leading to the slow demise of uniquely innovative and distinct watch brands that used to represent the skill of labor and design for countries such as Switzerland, Germany, Japan, France, and the U.S. There are some really cool watches to come out of Hong Kong, but I find a lot of them are glitzy bling, lacking the refinement and sheer class of legacy watch makers. Additionally, some of these Chinese watches aren't even cheap, there are some extremely expensive Chinese watches out there whose price over cost margins must be enormous; brands like Longio, Rossini, and Memorigin. Another factor is that China doesn't respect trademarks and many of their watches use well known trademarks without license...Anybody want a Pagani watch? I can't make one in my country without infringement, but China can and does. Imagine if you built up a legacy around a brand name or work of art et cetera and some manufacturer steals your intellectual property and drives it right off a cliff and collects the insurance, metaphorically speaking. I can respect a watch from Malaysia, Taiwan, or Singapore because those are Asian countries that completely respect intellectual property and offer a high degree of quality control in general, unlike the PRC.

I have a Starking AM0184. For $40 I don't think you can beat it. Just realize you are buying a $40 watch and not a $400 watch and you won't be disappointed. Same goes for my Cadisen and Loreo. Look good. Run good. If they die I will throw them away without shedding a tear.

China can produce high quality just as easily as low; we just don't want to pay for anything made well in China. The perception of things coming from there being cheap/low quality comes from most distributors wanting to buy the cheaper items with greater margins. I wouldnt expect a $15 Chinese automatic and a $150 Chinese automatic to be the same, but most of us will only ever see the $15 one and assume that's all they have to offer. Goes for every type of material good you can buy.
@ivanlagrossemoule4 жыл бұрын
Not true. China can't produce as high quality all the time, because it often requires tons of acquired knowledge and experience. That being said it doesn't mean everything they make is bad nor are they limited to low quality. It just takes a lot of time and investment to get to the higher end quality.
