Oh wow, its crazy how things just suddenly break and proving to be expensive as well. I think I have decided not to go down the DCC route as for me that's way too much dependant on me knowing what I am doing and to be honest I don't, So will leave it as Analogue control to be honest. Looking forward to the next video about the NR Class loco.

There must be a thing about things all failing at once. I think I can count twelve separate issues all cropping up at roughly the same time.

Flipping eck as long as the NR loco is working:)

when dealing with failing drives instead of copying the file system you should have done a raw copy using "DD / ddrescue" or something starting at byte position 0 to the end with skip enabled then done a reverse with retries , unless their are files you really needed first then you snatch those asap

These drives were in two separate RAID arrays with redundancy. If the dead drive had the common decency to properly die, it would have gone a lot faster, and I wouldn't have lost any more data. The lost files were a result of XFS errors -- it had already fumbled those files a long time ago, unfortunately. If I had migrated the partitions to the new array (which would have been easier and faster), I'd have just preserved the corruption, not solved anything. It also allowed me to unify one filesystem for files coming from both previous arrays, rather than having separate partitions on the new array depending on where the partition was originally stored. And I could ditch XFS for EXT4.

Shot in the dark, try adding some cooling to those chips and whatnot. Might improve longevity and make it all less angry
@DongitsModelRailway Жыл бұрын
Cooling is definitely a good shout. The power electronics do have heatsinks on them, there are three on the top of the DCC controller and five on the top edge of the booster, both visible in the thumbnail :) There's even a gap in the baseboard to allow the heat to rise. That's definitely a future consideration though -- if I close over that section fully to add scenery without thinking about the electronics underneath, I will store myself up a future problem.

Ah usb type b cables. There are no good quality ones.
@DongitsModelRailway Жыл бұрын
Agreed for 'Micro-B', those seem to die after 3-6 months no matter how much you spend on them or how carefully you treat them. But this is the full size square type B, typically used for connecting printers and so on. I've not historically had problems with those. That previous cable was an extra-long one though, as I used to need the extra length to get between the PC and the layout. Now the layout has grown enough to get close to the desk, most of the distance is over CBUS and not over USB. So a shorter cable is fine.

Get your server OFF the floor, computers with fans make great air cleaners. I try to clean out the accumulated dust and cat hair every six months.
