Today's lithium ion batteries aren’t able to meet the power and energy requirements for portable electronics and electric vehicles-nor are they meeting safety and cost requirements well. Lithium/ sulfur batteries could potentially triple the energy storage capability of lithium ion cells, enough for electric cars with a 300-mile range, and at a lower cost with improved safety. Dr. Cairns will present this new battery and explain the current state of Li/S cell development along with the latest research at Berkeley Lab.

Dr. Elton Cairns is right, the Li/S batteries are much more attractive, but the problem is - nobody wants to invest into an idea before it's running and giving a torque. BUT the idea is very nice, and i would like to know more about the scale of investments needed to make such a battery in the next 2-3 years please.

I think due to the high specific volume they would not be suitable for cars, but would be for larger vehicles like trucks/lorries etc Best for applications where volume is not so much an issue.

Goodenough has developed a glass electrolyte that further raises the energy density to 8500 Wh/kg of Lithium. (Goodenough is the inventor of Lithium ion batteries)
