My grandson (13)loved khan academys coding classes. I think he learnt animation on there too. He now collaborates with a similar aged boy he mer online initially through an interactive class,they have an animation youtube channel,his friend is in Poland though the family are nomadic so he has been here, my grandson has stayed with them when they visited Portugal and is saving for a trip to Poland in the future. Online learning through various sites gives home educated kids massive opportunities!❤

Yes great explanation. This is very much how my daughters were homeschooled. One of the big benefits I found was that my science minded daughter ended up with 11 science credits when she was done because she just kept finding classes that she really wanted to take. In one more semester she will be graduating college with a science degree and 4.0 gpa. She also worked and volunteered while in high school which helped her narrow down her goals and build experience. She is super intrinsically motivated.

You can use Modern States and they will give a voucher to take the exam for free. Also, you can self study for any AP exams and take them at your local high school to get college credit.

I know so many unschooled teens (that’s the majority of our co-op) who do nothing but play Roblox and Fortnight all day. Some of their parents are getting worried the magic never happened for them now that we are entering the end of high school. What advice would you have for them? I do more child led learning and limit video games so I’m not sure what to say. I feel so bad!!

YES. My daughter goes to a homeschool co-op 2 days a week..she is an only child so I don't mind that she is on the phone with her friends while they do their homework. I love the curriculum because it is Christ centered, her and her friends do enjoy playing Roblox together though. I keep her very active too with volleyball and voice lessons..I guess it's all about balance because we all need downtime...

I would say they need to get them excited about becoming an adult. Help them think about what life will look like for them at 20, 30, 40. Then plan how to get there. The magic won’t happen if they are always gaming and not having other experiences. Gaming is fun, and even somewhat beneficial, but life is about balance. I would not just cut them off or place limits, but rather encourage them to try other things to reach their goals for the future. It can be fun and exciting … even better than gaming (but I hate gaming so maybe I just don’t get it 🤷‍♀️😆)

This is a great point. It think there are parents who intentionally create enriching environments and enthusiasm for learning in their kids from an early age. I think that involves limiting screen time. Kids don't know what they're missing (adults might not either if they didn't have a rich education themselves). Those parents can help their children succeed in a relaxed but involved way. Other parents seem to not know how to encourage learning. There is no "magic" that happens; it's whether or not parents cultivate an interest in learning.

@RaisingWildflowersHomeschool
@RaisingWildflowersHomeschool 2 ай бұрын
No issues at all with the transcripts and community college. Honestly, colleges are for-profit and want to accept as many kids as they can at the community college level 😉 Passing the placement testing was the main entrance barrier. Creating high school transcripts is a great idea for a video 😊

@@RaisingWildflowersHomeschool Can I ask, exactly how are you an unbiased determiner of your child's high school transcript? And if you admit to bias (because it's true), then great! Why is there a place for parental bias of all kinds in your child's education journey? I am so concerned.
@RaisingWildflowersHomeschool
@RaisingWildflowersHomeschool 2 ай бұрын
@danymangrove5333 The goal is for our kids to become happy adults who are able to make and reach their goals - among other things, of course. If the goal is to be accepted into college, do well in higher ed., and earn income in the way they wish - what is the concern with parental bias in childhood? Do you really think teachers are machines without bias?
@danymangrove5333
@danymangrove5333 2 ай бұрын
@@RaisingWildflowersHomeschool Nope! Teachers are certainly not machines without bias. There is the idea of the average, however, a holistic view, if you will, of a child's education that can be partially seen in a transcript with many different people, containing many different biases that is going to paint a more diverse view of a child's educational journey than one or two parent/ guardians. The concern for parental bias is not placed correctly in your argument here, you decided to fit my concerns in a more vague category at large, which by nature diminishes the argument, and frankly I am not sure what parent's bias does to - childhood- in general besides the old nature vs. nurture. I am concerned about parents' bias in their child's educational transcript especially when it concerns the competition that exists regarding college access. There is a child who is being judged by a guardian versus being judged on a more diverse view, and it is not deemed fair in my opinion. If test-taking alone can combat the bias, and the child is simply a great test taker, proving to a college through a closer (albeit not perfect) take on merit, then great! There is still the concern of day-to-day feedback to a student given by one or two family members versus the value that feedback holds in someone who did not watch your first steps. I do think homeschooling can be an option for a few, but I am really concerned about what impact channels like this may have on the many. You can turn to Kahn academy (in the same way a k-12 student can btw) and other curriculums to test and QUITE LITERALLY serve as unbiased machines in the development of a transcript, but education is the word that encompasses the structure meant for children to grow into their authentic self with many trained professionals to aid their journey. The system IS NOT doing well, I know this. I am deeply concerned about the larger push to leave education altogether, as this will have major and horrific effects globally and generationally.
@RaisingWildflowersHomeschool
@RaisingWildflowersHomeschool 2 ай бұрын
She is going to a community college, there is no competition lol. Transcripts are, quite frankly, irrelevant. She has to pass an entrance exam to attend as a high school student, but if she were 18 and didn't pass, she would still be accepted and required to take a couple remedial classes. If a more competitive college is basing entrance on a single piece of paper called a "transcript," there is a kink in the system (and, oh man, do we already know there is! lol) As far as educational feedback - we take a much more holistic approach to learning. I am a coach and guide, not a grader of papers. Real life doesn't work like that. You are consistently assuming homeschooled children do not have experiences with other adults or children outside the home. This is a huge flaw in your thinking. There are so many opportunities for kids to attend classes, co-ops, camps, sports, internships, etc. Access to adult educators/mentors is not confined to school. Homeschoolers are not leaving education; we are leaving the school system.

@RaisingWildflowersHomeschool
@RaisingWildflowersHomeschool 2 ай бұрын
The main difference is in unschooling there are no requirements. I don’t require her to choose a science or history curriculum if she doesn’t want to. She has her schedule a bit more structured now since she is looking towards college and working on high school credits. But, for example, when she was younger there were several years she chose not to do any type of math curriculum.

tbh anyone giving advice on unschool while their child is still a child and they have not seen the long term effects of such a decision and how it will massively impact their life as an adult is jumping the gun with assuming themselves an expert and it’s just not an accurate way to tell your child’s story. I would argue this should only be told by the children who went through it and at their own discretion when they get older.

My sister and I were both unschooled. She received a PhD in chemistry and is happily married with two children. I received a B.S. in computer science, and I am currently attending law school at 21 years old. I personally don't know anyone who attended a government-run school that is as successful as my sister and I are.

My least concerns are whether or not someone will be 21 and in law school or eventually married. These are really traditional models of success for a movement claiming to veer off of that for self satisfaction. My concern is lack of exposure and access to out of home opportunities that are not based on academics that school provides. I am also worried about students that could be facing abuse or neglect at home and have no/ minimal ways out. I am worried about the teenager when they are a teenager. I am worried about lost opportunity for extracurricular joy. I am glad you seem very happy with your path, but personally being in law school at 21 would have been something that took away the other valuable things about my 20s.

I don’t think the way they are being “depicted” is accurate in your description. We are more concerned about parents blocking access to school services that are beyond academics that may flag abuse in the home, feeding kids that are hungry, providing social groups outside of the parent’s comfort and preference, practice having assignments judged and evaluated objectively and not by mom or dad, like they will be in the workforce, learning the balance of work and home life and the necessary relationship between the two, access to sports and extracurricular activities that have coaches and mentors with more or at least different experience than mom or dad, practicing working with people you don’t know or don’t like to reach a common goal, practicing testing regularly and often so any certifications or higher education is available to them, navigating high school romance, friendships, and social hierarchies that will help them find an identity outside of their home.
@Ann_Bloom
@Ann_Bloom 2 ай бұрын
I was homeschooled, and I was a National Merit Scholar and tested in the top 1% on the ACT, which awarded me a full-ride scholarship to university. My same age-group counterparts from my neighborhood that attended government schools all have student loan debt because of the inadequacy of the government-run schools they attended. One problem prevalent in government-run schools is their usage of a grade-based system opposed to the more effective Socratic method. This is why homeschooling is significantly more beneficial than the inadequate ratio of government-run school classrooms. Another issue is the lack of diversity in the classroom population of government schools. It does not prepare students for higher education or the workforce, as they will not be surrounded by a homogenous group of same age/socioeconomic class individuals. I would have to also state that wanting the government to shape a child's social identity is problematic to say the least. This is on the fence of communism. Your comment is quite disturbing at best, and you seem very brainwashed.
@danymangrove5333
@danymangrove5333 2 ай бұрын
So unfortunately this comment loses its value when ending with an accusation that I am brainwashed, but I do feel like responding to the main point you are making. It’s ironic that you would use a test and data percentage to validate the success, and if I may say it seems like you feel - superior- over government school. Good job on the test, you are probably very smart. Anyway, when it comes to children, the concern is larger than academics. There is a lot of abuse and neglect going on in homes that would not be intervened if it were not for the k - 12 model we have. Schools are like mini societies, yes they need change, yes we need to improve, but this kind of parent divestment does not help the most vulnerable student that needs school to eat, provide referrals to social services, engage with peers for free, and have access to extracurriculars for free. But good job on that test though.
