This cruelty exists in real life animal circuses. This is why Ringling ran out of business. @@nyxos0 Go on, say why not, prove it, because it kind of does make it better. Since it was made in a period when segregation was still very alive in the US, I rather like the idea of Dumbo being given identifitably black friends. If you can forgive the 'caricatures', it's quite a nice thing! And really what are we objecting to here, they call each other brother, joke around a bit and sing well in a musical film? Oh and by the way the name Jim Crow does not actually feature in it. What you're seeing is not really caricature, they're characters, black characters for sure, and smart ones informed by their own culture - black culture - most obviously jazz culture. What's most charming and believable about the sequence is it's the black characters who despite the jokes are the most sympathetic to the little outcast - and did you ever stop to consider why? It's because they know what it's like to not be accepted by certain parts of society, that's why the scene works so well. It's maybe not the most subtle treatment of black-ness, but it is certainly not one that er... dehumanises the crows. Would it really be better if such black characters were indistinguishable from white ones? There, nuance.
