My mother struggles with severe mental illness and was very abusive toward me and my siblings and as we got older and started fighting back and calling her on her behavior this was literally her biggest explanation why she can do whatever she wanted to us and we just have to deal. Honor your mother and your father. She kicked my dad out and raised us alone so it just came down to honor your mother. And she felt like that gave her free reign and zero responsibility for her actions.

To you and Art Bok. A virtual hug through the internet. You awareness of their shortcomings and understanding that it is not you but them, will stand you in good stead in life. People who have not had parental love can have self loathing feelings and be taken advantage of by those who pretend to be a friend or lover. Glad you sound ok. Take a look at Theramin Trees who does some great talks on the damage all this does to folks, if interested.

@@onedaya_martian1238 thank you! I have been through the self loathing faze. I’ve questioned more times then I can count why she treated us the way she did. I haven’t seen or spoken to her or my siblings in several years and I’ve spent a lot of time reflecting on our relationship and come to the simple fact that it’s not that she just didn’t love me, I’m sure she does in her own way, but because of her illness and trauma she’s not capable of seeing her actions and how truly harmful they are. She only sees the good times we had and doesn’t see the screaming and hitting and tears. She doesn’t remember the manipulation degradation, but all the sacrifices she made to raise five children alone. My husband is bipolar and if he’s off his meds and falls down a rabbit hole, he doesn’t remember it very well afterwards. I see similar behavior in my mother but he chose to get help and treatment to be better she hid behind her religion and fake smiles. I know this happens to kids every single day and my heart bleeds for them, I want them to know they’re not alone and that the suffering is temporary. We are here for you if you need us. 🖤

There are at least 40,000 different Christian denominations because none of them can agree on what the Bible says. And no two Christians interpret the Bible the same way. What all knowing god couldn’t have his supposed word written so everyone could understand it and interpret it equally? If simplicity is genius then god is an imbecile.

There are 4 sets of commandments and 613 laws by ‘god’. Almost all of the 613 laws pertain to the primitive era in which they were written but both ‘god’ and Jesus specifically state that all those laws will be in effect until the end of time. You could understand primitive writers of the Bible to believe their backward era would never change. But a god or Jesus who are all knowing KNEW things would change and almost all of those 613 laws wouldn’t apply in modern days. This proves that no god wrote those laws. Men did. I’m amused at many of them. One of the 613 says is a man sleeps with his daughter in law then both the man and the daughter in law must be executed. But later in the Bible Mr Lot’s daughters get their daddy drunk and rape him on successive nights. Another law says if a child curses at his father that child must be executed. So according to god it’s okay to drug and rape your father but if you cuss at him you get executed. And it’s okay to god to rape your father but it’s a death sentence if a man and daughter have a consensual affair. No wonder Christians are the most prolific cherry pickers in the history of cherry-picking. If they actually adhered to god’s 613 laws none would be alive or have eyesight. Jesus said to gouge out your eyes if you feel lust. Every normal human experiences lust so if you see a Christian without a seeing eye dog he’s a damned hypocrite. Christians like to weasel out of laws by saying “Well, that was in the old testament so it doesn’t count”. That’s bullshit since the Ten Commandments were in the old testament and they want to erect the Ten Commandments in front of every building in the country. Christians try to excuse god’s horrible wrath and the draconian laws in the Old Testament by saying those laws ceased to be in effect when Jesus arrived. But they are not being honest and they haven’t even read the Bible they say is the word of the god they worship. In Matthew 5:17-18 Jesus says he has come to ENFORCE the Old Testament laws. And to Christians who say Old Testament laws cease to be valid when Jesus appeared why do they say they follow the Ten Commandments in the Old Testament? MATTHEW 5:17-18 “Think not that I have come to abolish the law and the prophets; I have NOT come to abolish them but to FULFILL THEM!” “For truly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, NOT one iota, NOT a dot, will pass from the law until all is accomplished.” Jesus loves the laws of the Old Testament and likes having people stoned to death, even innocent rape victims. And he believes if you eat shellfish you’re going to hell. And if you masturbate you’re going to hell. Jesus’ affirming all the Old Testament laws in Matthew 5:17-18 completely debunks the myth that Jesus is all about love. Jesus even said “Slaves obey your masters, even the cruel ones”. Jesus was pro slavery. (1 Peter 2:18) The Bible says you can beat your adult and child slaves almost to the point of death. What just or moral god could advocate ownership of other humans and beating them almost to death? SD1026211431JC

I tried to be a christian for 50 years, but it never took. I wasted so many years thinking I was the one who was broken, because my mind couldn't accept any of the bible as truth. I bought a copy of Robert Crumb's illustrated *Book of Genesis* for my 19 year old son ten years ago, because he's an artist and I knew he would love Crumb's style. It's a brilliant book, because it changes nothing as it's written. There are graphic depictions of famous bible scenes, such as Lot's daughter's getting dad drunk and riding him like a pony. It was actually reading the book of Genesis, and especially hearing Hemant's excellent series of Genesis videos that finally helped me see there was nothing wrong with my "lack of faith". I may have "lost" most of my evangelical family, but I'm free from their hateful, misogynistic, genocidal fantasy world forever.

That's because the Bible consistently describes women and animals equally with them having the same purpose (to serve men) and them being described in parallel e.g. "hire of a whore, or the price of a dog." The commandments also make much more sense if you imagine women the same way you would dogs, instead of human beings. They are expected to serve men for their divine reward, not directly follow man's commandments (except when it's them explicitly).
@UniDocs_Mahapushpa_Cyavana
@UniDocs_Mahapushpa_Cyavana 3 жыл бұрын
As a side note, the price of a dog being illegal is a lot more sinister than it sounds to us today. Dogs are a vital part of keeping livestock safe and have so many essential uses, Having complete control over who gets dogs by making selling them "immoral" the cult this was written for (not yet softened its positions) has massive control of its followers and ensures compliance. This a good example of why you shouldn't trust the Bible's authors or have faith in their morality.

Thanks Hemant for your as usual irreverent and refreshing take on the Bible. Your emphasis on the silliness of some of the verses really drives home that these could not possibly be the words of a God such as Christians depict Him. I have always wondered why would a being with the power to create the universe be jealous of anything? What could possibly diminish his might? If his omnipotence is real, why is he so insecure? But a human tribal warlord would need to assert his dominance on a constant basis, lest some young upstart try to take his place. All worship the Alpha male primate!

Look at it this way. Vague sayings in a book with god's "wisdom" allows people to get people together and be told the interpretation, and then they pay money for those holy people to do that. Yeah, the Jews never call them ‘the ten commandments’, which in Hebrew would be ‘aseret ha’mitzvot’. They are referred to as ‘aseret ha’d’varim’ (the ten words) or ‘aseret ha’dibrot’ (the ten statements). As mentioned, the Jewish law (Hebrew: Torah) has 613 commandments (Hebrew: mitzvot), most of which Christians don’t observe, while Orthodox Jews do (though there are some mitzvot that cannot be observed today due to the lack of a Temple). Interestingly, Jehovah’s Witnesses base their refusal to accept blood transfusions on the Jewish commandment (mitzvah) to abstain from eating blood. Yet you never see them keep any of the other 612 commandments (or even the literal interpretation of the commandment against eating blood; I don’t think they only eat kosher meat).

The exposure when going up steps interestingly has a parrellel at least twice, maybe five times in the bible. 1) Noah gets drunk , falls asleep and his three sons see him. David dances in the temple (? like a dervish?) and his outer garment rides up. 3) Possibilty that Jesus was crucified without any undergarments on, this may have been a standard punishment as part of roman crucifixtion. 4) Jesus is quoted as 'I was naked, and you clothed me' ie expanding the idea that society has a responsiblity to provide the basic needs to its people even if those people cannot afford the most basic of a single shrift garment. 5) The tearing of clothes by priests/kings/prophets to make a point either to implore God to do something, or to implore their listeners/followers/citizens to turn from their wicked ways. 6) possibly, one of the Sins of Sodom I think was to steal the clothing of visitiors to their city (see also Good Samaritan providing clothing in Jesus ' parable after theft). We know that clothes could be a symbol of status, or making a statement (Joesph for example), Overall though the post-amble (or footnote) seems a practicallity, and this is one of the problems of the Bible, some writen from the Temple and Priestly point of view, clashing with the narrative of the Kingly 'scribes' , which in part led to the later split of Judah vs Samaria / the 11 tribes lands as how, when and where worship was acceptable to the Lord.

Some notes: this is one of three sets of the ten words in the Bible. This at Exodus 20:2-17 is one of the copies of the ethical decalogue, supposedly adapted by the Priestly source, perhaps from the Elohist source. Exodus 34:11-26 has the ritual decalogue, from the Yahwist source. Deuteronomy 5:6-21 has the other copy of the ethical decalogue, adapted by the Deuteronomist, perhaps from the Elohist source. Of the differences between Exodus 20 and Deuteronomy 5, most notably, the reason for the Sabbath in Exodus is because Yahweh made the world in 6 days (based on the Priestly creation story in Genesis 1:1-2:3), but in Deuteronomy it's because you were slaves in Egypt, and so you and your slaves should rest on the seventh day. (Sabbath is from sunset Friday to sunset Saturday. It is not Sunday.) Another difference is that Exodus uses the same word for coveting wives and the other possessions. Deuteronomy has one word for coveting possessions, but uses a different word for coveting wives. The commandment to not have other gods before/besides me is literally to have no other gods "against my face". The script used for Hebrew at this time was the old Paleo-Hebrew Canaanite script, not the modern square script which evolved via Aramaic. Also, rather than each stone tablet having half the words it's more likely that each stone tablet had all ten words, two identical copies, like copies of a contract or treaty. If you're going to have replicas/monuments of the ten words, at least get the script right, yes? (Orthodox Jews might say it was the Aramaic/square script, which was then somehow lost, and magically rediscovered later. But that's utter nonsense, about as ridiculous as saying that God magically gave Paul of Tarsus a King James 1611 English Bible.) And which of the three instances of the ten words will you use? Exodus 20? Exodus 34? Deuteronomy 5? You are correct, Exodus 20 does not call these the ten words, and does not mention the stone tablets. The stone tablets are mentioned in Exodus 34. Deuteronomy 5 does claim to contain the ten words, and Deuteronomy 10 asserts that both sets of tablets, the ones Moses broke, and the replacements, contained the same content.

P.S. a few more: The greatest commandments according to Jesus (Mark 12:28-34; Matthew 22:34-40; Luke 10:25-28); are to love Yahweh with your whole heart, soul, and mind, and to love your neighbor as yourself. While Exodus 20:6 and Deuteronomy 5:10 do mention loving Yahweh, Jesus was instead quoting Deuteronomy 6:4-5 (including the "shema" in Mark. "Hear, Israel. Yahweh our gods, Yahweh is one".). Love your neighbor is from Leviticus 19:17-18, and Paul considers it a summary of the law. (Romans 13:8-10; Galatians 5:14). The oldest copies as far as we know of the ethical decalogue are in the Nash papyrus, and the Dead Sea scroll 4Q41 Deuteronomy. I'd rather have replicas of these, which we can objectively copy, than try to make speculative reconstructions of the stone tablets.

@@wprandall2452 It would only serve to prove their own hypocrisy, not to mention how easy it would make it for people to realize the Ten Commandments have very little to do with actual law. Freedom of Religion in America for example goes against the first commandment. On slavery and not killing - you can see the writer/s having a very human trait - treating something as wrong not because it is wrong by itself, but because “it was done to me”. On the sabbath - it can be seen somewhat as a social rule to give people some rest time. Of course it was modified to be something else.
