In anticipation of Tom Cruise's big sci-fi movie, Edge of Tomorrow, we decided to go back to the most recent Tom Cruise sci-fi movie for sins... Oblivion. It co-stars Morgan Freeman and that guy from Game of Thrones whose name I don't feel like trying to spell... but the sins are still there, plain as day.
Thursday: Sins of another recent sci-fi film.

Tom Cruise plays Jack Reacher, a man living on the Edge of Tomorrow as the world faces Oblivion. A flashback in the beginning shows us he was Born on the Fourth of July, foreshadowing the Legend he would become. For Jack is no simple maintenance tech, but a man, a warrior, whose honor is Far and Away greater than those of other men, making him like The Last Samurai on earth. He starts Losin' It when he discovers there's actually a War of the Worlds going on, as aliens are draining the planet of water leaving deserts and Vanilla Skies. He will need All the Right Moves, and the Endless Love of his female warrior companion, his Valkyrie, to succeed. With only a Few Good Men to help, he will engage in some Risky Business and take the fight to the heart of the enemy. Out of all the guns that have tried and failed, he will be the Top Gun that will succeed in defeating The Outsiders. Unfortunately, there will be Collateral damage in what everyone had classifed as a Mission: Impossible. Though not all will know his name, he will be remembered as the one who saved the water, and life, of the planet. All will honor the ultimate sacrifice of the Rain Man.

+technobarry You know, that's exactly how Tron: Legacy is, too. I'm a huge Tron nerd, but IMO, the plot was severely lacking and hole-ridden. I just stop looking for a story and start indulging in the emotion, the visuals, and the score. It makes it all a whole lot more enjoyable :)

@@michaelmcneil4168 The water would be released as helium after fusion, that would be great because earth has very little helium in it. The small amount of tritium required could be contained in a ceramic sphere which would allow it to me used very efficently and would not require liquid cooling. The remnants of the tritium could be stored in a more convenient place because the ceramic spheres would block most of the radiation and can withstand hitting other speheres or dropping from a reasonable distance.

You usually do a good job pointing out the little things, but you missed a good one. If my memory is correct, the song that plays when Jack starts the record player in his makeshift house is Ramble On from Led Zeppelin II. That is the third song on side two, but he drops the needle on the outside if the record. Since that it is one of my all time favorite songs on one of my favorite albums, this bothered me greatly when I saw it lol.

So many critics didn't like this film, but I found it so inspirational in so many ways, the love story, the struggle for survival and the struggle to find one's self, with the music setting the emotional tone to perfection. All these things drown out the plot flaws, and leave you with a sense of loss and wonder.

10:51 - I don't think this is a fault at all. The TET sensed that Harper didn't answer the previous question honestly, so he has to answer the next one honestly. And it is the kind of answer that the TET would expect to hear - it has fooled the clones into thinking that they are saving humanity, even though they're really doing the opposite. Harper's answer is therefore honest, but he knows more than the TET knows he knows. It's hard to defend the mistakes and inconsistencies in this film. But it's still quite watchable. I enjoyed it.

Achuwally, tom cruise was supposed to be a human communicating with another human, thinking the war was long over. When he mentions saving the species he’s revealing that he knows whats up.. but he’s saying julia will be an “effective team member” so the tets like meh lettem in good enough for me. In the interest of improving their system I guess.

“Minor plot inconsistencies” my brother in Christ not one thing about this movie makes any sense from any of the actual characters perspectives… Honestly cinema sins didn’t even brush on some of the most egregious plot holes… like if any army of Tom Cruise’s had no issue conquering the world, why do they now have to be separated from one another and tricked into doing what the tet wants? So really the revelation of Tom hanks clones is only a cool twist to the audience but makes 0 sense to characters involved… and this movie will do shit like that 100 more times tbh

Ahhh, I hate the 'slamming butt of the gun into someones forehead and they black out' thing. It always seems to magically make them instantly black out, but then wake up totally fine a while later. That kind of a blow to your head would most likely be pretty devastating depending on just how hard it was. But still, they make it seem like knocking someone out is just so easy-just hit them on the forehead with you gun, and 'boom'! they're unconscious! Like this guy said in the video, it isn't some 'consciousness button', nor does one exist in that way.

Ok, the "sky tower" with the huge window and a landing pad just below really is a cool pad. Add a naked hottie and the heated sky pool and I could totally see being happy, for at least 2 days. Then I'd be on the dual sport with a rifle slung on my shoulder for the rest of time. I guess that's their point huh? Perfect man cave with options

They name the huge mothership the "Tet", presumably short for "Tetrahedron", a 4-sided 3-d shape... yet, with the cropped corners, it technically has 8 faces, making it an Octahedron, meaning it should be called the "Oct". [Ding!!] 1:18 Super-high-tech alien technology is great for everything except screens, which are limited to GameBoy-style greyscale dot matrices. [Ding!!] The drone leaves immediately, rather than help out a friendly trooper, or even play bodyguard. Drones are dicks. [Ding!!] Was New York buried in, like, a day...? Because, rebar-inforced concrete crumbles kinda quickly without maintenance. They definitely wouldn't last long enough for sediment to build up and bury them like that. And why the hell are there so many traces of buildings left after a war that destroyed the world as we know it...? Shouldn't it just be all rubble and wasteland? [Ding!!] Considering it was able to blow up the fucking Moon, shouldn't the Tet be able to hit the one rebellious Tech with an orbital strike of some kind when it was RIGHT OVER HIS FUCKING HEAD as he took off in the aircraft that it somehow can't shut down...? Buuuuut, we wanna do a dogfight! [Ding!!] 7:27 Or felt the excruciating pain of being shot by a high-powered firearm!! [Ding!!] Nuclear stuff has to glow so we know it's nuclear cliché. Buuut, at least it's not sickly green, so only half a sin! [Ding!] 9:01 Why the hell would the Oct-err-Tet come to Earth to suck up all the water? Isn't there more water on Europa, which by astronomical standards is practically right next door to us...? As well as it, like... being a whole fucktonne easier, as there's no indigenous lifeforms to put up a resistance...? [Ding!!] Well-known and outspoken advocate of alien cult $cientology is in a movie with aliens. Go figure! [Ding!!]

But not only did she see the gun fire at her, meaning she'd expect to be shot anyway, but it looks like a relatively low-velocity round, as it hit her dead-centre in the stomach, but didn't pass straight through her, hitting and shattering her spine and doing major damage to her spinal cord, or even severing it, in which case her so much as standing's a sin. :P

11:33 Cruise drops in a Scientology reference. "If we have souls, they're made of the love we share." One of the many many reasons I really don't like him. That and another reason is every character he plays is the same damn person, just maybe named differently sometimes with a slightly changed back plot.

He did have some say in small lines that he wanted to add in. Yes, I believe that was his lines. He's said many times in the past that he uses his fame, movies, money, and power to spread the message of scientology throughout the world. Also going back again to the other point, every character is the same. He's got one style of acting and that's that. Oh and he chose, begged almost, to get the role in Oblivion.

The thing about the hut is the only thing that made sense in this movie. 1. Why does Vikka not know that Jack went off screen so often to build the place? 2. How did he build the place and found the place? Easy: The clones are clearly not 50 years old, so every few years they are not an efficient team anymore and they get replaced with new clones. So a few clone generations of Jack-49 have all wandered off their path and found the lake each building another portion of the hut and collecting more stuff.

Albert Valenzuela Also, it's not a mere action movie, but contains true sci-fi elements (true to the genre, of course). It's horrible and completely destroyed my appetite. It's got this guy who collects testicles for a living I think. I don't remember if that was ever explained. It goes way too far with blood and guts. I usually like movies with a lot of blood and gore, but Planet Terror went WAY overboard, and I couldn't handle it. There's even dog that gets completely severed just instantly, and blood flies all over the place. There are also so many pointless characters. This mom gives his son a gun, and I was actually really excited to see him blow some heads off. I thought I would like the movie. But instead, he just shoots himself, and I was pissed. I can go on and on about it. It would make a lot more sense if it was directed by Roland Emmerich and Joel Schumacher.

Frei Train Omgosh. Planet Terror ROCKS! I'm talking the short version in the Grindhouse double feature along with Tarentino's Death Proof. Robert Rodriguez gives us a satirical over-the-top nightmare world full of pseudo-zombies and psychotic doctors. It is not meant to "make sense". Everything is so exaggerated it becomes funny. And the fake trailers! I will say no more to avoid spoilers. Any true cinema junkie must see this.
