Just popping by to say that GX has aged well in a disturbing way. We live in a world where ''Fortnite tutor'' is a real, genuine job. There's college courses for esports annd there's tons of news about colleges and schools treating their football teams with a fervent passion. So Duel Monsters with its awe-inspiring holograms making it more of a spectator sport than football ever was and being 100x more popular then any esport would of course take the world by storm. the written test is likely a preliminary test, if you fail that you don't get to do the practical. also, syrus is definitely supposed to be overly paranoid. hardly anyone is actually gonna be focused on his duel, but as the younger brother of the school's top student he believes anyone could be focused on him, and he has stage fright.

Great to see this. Funnily enough, despite not actually growing up with GX, it's my favorite of the Yugioh anime. Don't get me wrong, I think that 5Ds was an objectively better show, but I prefer the silly, off the walls atmosphere of GX. GX managed to have a dueling monkey and an evil duel spirit that consumed souls in back-to-back episodes, and somehow neither one feels out of place for the show. With most things, I'd say that tonal inconsistency is a negative, but GX is proud of being able to completely switch the tone between episodes and somehow turns that into a strength.

6:21 I actually think the life point cost was worth it here. From Crowlers perspective Jaden is a dumb rookie who has no clue what he's doing and doesn't stand a chance against him. He likely doesn't think Jaden could damage him for 500 life points let alone 4000 so only paying 1000 and then just having 3000 for the rest of the duel shouldn't make a difference to him. More importantly Confiscation is a DAMN good card, that card is banned for a reason. Not only does it give him knowledge of Jaden's hand but since he can force a discard he's also stripping Jaden of his resources before Jaden has even had a turn. It's the same reason everyone hates Delinquent Duo so much, though honestly Confiscation is probably worse than that card is.

The goal of Crowler was not just to beat Jaden but to humiliate him as well. Using Confiscation allows him to potentially remove Jaden's one good card and leave him with no strategy, thus making him look weak and justifying your not letting him attend. It could also play into your rewrite of Crowler where he's testing to see how well Jaden recovers from having his opening strategy disrupted. "Wait, you mean I pass?" "Yes, not only did you defeat my Ancient Gear Golem, but you didn't fall apart when my Confiscation card took away your best card and found a new strategy to overcome my monster. You may be a cheeky, tardy child, but you might have the makings of a somewhat decent duelist here, in time."

0:58 I’d argue that those are just the outliers in a long life of just playing the game out of love. Through the game, Yugi met folks who became his closest friends. Through the game, Yugi helped the Pharaoh return to rest. Through the game, Yugi eventually created his own game in DSOD. Yeah, there’s probably a lot of trauma there, but it doesn’t feel like Yugi to just drop the game entirely like that. For all we know, the reason he’s carrying a deck is because he came from a locals.

If this was the real life card game, Jaden would've lost this duel. Winged Kuriboh only blocks damage for the rest of the turn *_AFTER_* it goes to the Graveyard, so if it's attacked by a monster with piercing battle damage (like Ancient Gear Golem) then you'll still take the damage from the initial attack.

It's worth mentioning ancient gear has a built in Timegazer+stargaze effect where cards can't be activated after it declares an attack. That's pretty nuts considering cards like mirror force and negate attack where a bit more utilitous in this age of yugioh.

That’s not Atem. GX takes place at least a decade after Duel Monsters. Yugi has Atem’s voice because he’s no longer a high schooler. He’s about 28. He’s also not wearing the Puzzle, which at this point is buried after Atem has gone on to the afterlife. It remains buried to this day in the show, as the show has a different time line to that one movie, which follows the manga timeline.

I am a former wrestler and hearing you went to the US open is awesome. I am a state qualifier, I wrestled in the same arena that Bo Nickal wrestled in 8th grade and I also got to meet at ncaas the year after I went to state. I didn’t know they held the US open and World Championship where Kyle Synder became the youngest wrestler to win a world championship until Amit Elor won a world championship in 2022. Same with Olympic gold medals. It makes a lot of sense in an 8000 life point duel with proper deck synergy that can control the board in 1-2 turns. But this is barely past the GOAT format and very early on into the shift into proper archetypes. And half the life points. I wouldn't blind open with a card that costs 1000 LP, even if it was broken like confiscation. Knowledge is minimal since apparently every duelist here except Allister later on runs different decks (and apparently it's a secret what monsters do lol), and so the discard advantage is also minimal

@@roncerjani9063 I understand where you're coming from. But I mostly want to emphasize that this is for the anime, not the actual TCG. I think I mostly agree with you if this was like, Duel Links. The big issue here is that anime characters are stupid lol. More subtly, there doesn't seem to be "meta" decks in the anime, and for a very long time it seems like card knowledge isn't a given like IRL, where you can ask to read out any card effect. So getting knowledge on an elemental hero deck when you barely know much about it doesn't help. Especially when Crowler chose to discord Monster Reborn over Polymerization. i.e. Crowler didn't know E. heroes rely on fusions (let's pretend contact fusions weren't a thing yet lol. That came in like, S3) and went with the generally good card to discard.

Episode 1 and I have to wonder how Duel Academy is still in business... Crowler: Cut a third of the previous years applicants for an insanely frivolous reason, kids who probably have parents that are quite well off and could sue (no I do not care about how much money Kaiba has, he would lose that court case), spends the entirety of the series bashing those that are in a particular dorm while blatantly demonstrating favoritism towards another dorm, which would be a discrimination lawsuit waiting to happen, showed he has no issue essentially bullying a random kid with his "professional" level dueling deck, and on and on... Either Duel Academy would be sued into oblivion or Crowler would be fired so fast his head would spin.

I don’t want to pick at your picks but the written exam was to determine which dorm they would be placed in. The lower scores got Slifer, average scores got Ra, and highest got Obelisk. Think the writers forgot about Bastian because of this line but he was placed in Ra. Later, we find out you can duel your way into other dorms and not just increase rank over time. We see this with Jayden’s other roommate (forgot his name) as he says he had been in Slifer for a year before Jayden and Cyrus got there but failed his courses that year.

Sure, but what was the point of the field test then? What would make more sense would be doing it the other way around. First you duel to see if you even get in, THEN you do the written test to determine your rank As it is, it doesn’t make sense, because as you said. Bastion nails his test, and wins the exam test. How is he not blue? Another work around would be to either make Chazz a second year who’s worked his way up to blue, OR have him start as red with Jaden but quickly have opportunities to become blue. Opportunities afforded to him by his rich and influential family

For him being surprised towards burstinatrix, i think thats a dub thing, hes actually blowing dust off in the sub which makes more sense for the scene And as for the call with Shepard, again, its a dub thing. In the sub hes late due too a train wreck and Shepard calls to say that Crowler needs to give him a chance. This still might be a problem in your eyes cuz you could ask "how did he know that specifically Jaden was on the train" and to that i say, Jaden bumping into Yugi and decideing to cut through the forest made him even later to the feild test

I'm convinced that Crowler went into teaching solely because he enjoys being a jerk to children, and he decided that being a teacher would give him a "valid" excuse to do so. Now, by the end of the series, he actually experiences character growth and becomes a better person, but I genuinely can't think of a reason why he became a teacher other than bullying students which is not something that any reasonable teacher does. A better question is how he hasn't been fired yet.

No I agree, I even said in the video it’s a powerful card. And that’s THATS the card that should’ve tipped everyone off its Crowlers deck. Not the token cards that came later I was just saying. It’s a hefty cost in a 4000 LP game. I’ve seen very close games at tournaments be decided cause someone used a solemn warning too early. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn’t. I guess in my experience. I’m more hesitant with my life points.

Crowler is a type of teacher who is only willing to pass hes knowledge to students who he things deserve it, namely Obelisk blue and Ra yellow. He is playing favoritism with hes students. He clearly doesn't want all students to pass, which is why he kick out half candidates out just because they call him either "sir or mam"

Love GX but can’t stand Syrus. I get what they were going at with him. “The scared coward getting more and more brave over time” and honestly. I’m all for it but every time there felt like an inch of growth…. He goes back to square one. I also never got his PTSD over power bond…. With the way it effected him, you would have though Zane chewed his heart out over it when really all Zane did was give him criticism on how he was using it. Okay, telling him “I would have never given you that card” was a little harsh but that was the worst thing he said in a rant on just telling him “you have to think your moves through Syrus”

@@NitPik-p3r yes, yes i would, and i have. so would crowler, he kinda wants to embarrass jaiden. plus, with cards like judgement, there's never a reason not to play them, because life points aren't really a steep cost, that's just how the game evolved. a common way to put it is that life points aren't something to protect, but a resource to be spent. though i personally prefer to put it that you only ever have no life points, or more than 1. it's kinda like saying that it'd be weird if he played pot of greed. did he need to? who cares, it's free card advantage.

i really thought i'd have less to say about gx, since i can't make any comparisons to the manga because it's a different story. i expected i'd just make dumb joke or point out something the manga did differently like how jaiden runs a completely different deck, just to leave a comment so the algorithm pushes these videos more, but i managed to make 5 different comments. i guess it's because gx was my introduction to yu-gi-oh, and i know it so well as a result and have so much to say about how i've interpreted the characters and institutions.
