Yeah I thinl there's truth to that and it's not talked about enough. We saw with covid that by the time the government took action on it, it was already spreading like wildfire. I don't think the government is going to take serious action on bird flu before it becomes an emergency, so we need to take action ourselves with the information we have

Molecular virologist here, just wanted to give a few thoughts/corrections here. 4:28 on the video mentions that recombination of H5N1 can increase transmission between humans. This is misleading in two ways. The first one is that influenza is not likely to undergo recombination, it is more likely to undergo reassortment due to its segmented genome. In studies where they co-infected ferrets with H1N1 and H5N1, reassortment did occur and happened most with the HA and NA segments. The reassorted virions, while more infectious within the host, did NOT transmit to other non-infected ferrets. That was my main issue with this video. While I appreciate ASAPScience attempt to educate the public, they did not put enough time to place into context where the data lies right now. The video states that H5N1 becomes more suitable for human infection but it does not state that efficiency of replication within the host does not always translate to increased transmission. In fact, there has not been any documented cases of human to human spread of H5N1. Another thing to mention is that the mortality rate of this class is not as high as other avian influenza clades (or subtypes). As the video states, there has only been 2 severe cases of infection. There is no need for panic among the public right now. The CDC has ordered for subtyping of all Influenza A positive samples and we are monitoring the situation closely. Please like this comment to send to the top! I typed this on my phone on the way to lab so if anyone has any questions i can answer them to the best of my ability

Question, what, in your professional opinion, should Trump do to ensure the safety of his victims-I mean fellow countrymen?
@davidvillafuerte1385
@davidvillafuerte1385 7 күн бұрын
@ I may be biased given that it is my field of work, but it does worry me that he will pull funding for infectious diseases. Subtyping and surveillance is important because it allows us to stay on top of outbreaks and to see how the virus changes in real time. Do not get me wrong, I do understand the new administrations viewpoints that chronic illness is affecting more Americans. But that does not mean that infectious diseases aren’t important at all.

Would you agree that viruses and bacteria are smart enough to learn? As in, while the first few cases may be fatal or nearly fatal, a virus wants to live and it can't do that when it destroys its host. Therefore, it's never really necessary to worry too much about any kind of airborne illness. The regular influenza virus still offs people on a regular basis, just no ones talks about it anymore.
@davidvillafuerte1385
@davidvillafuerte1385 7 күн бұрын
@ Thank you for acknowledging that seasonal influenza is still a problem for some people! As far as being conscious, I don’t think that is the case for bacteria or pathogens. The reason we see a reduction in mortality rate is due to two main reasons. The first - as we get repeatedly infected with something, our bodies get better and better at fighting it off. The same applies to influenza and it is why we see that infants and older people get severe disease. Infants have an “inexperienced” immune system, and older people have a less efficient one. The same was seen with COVID. The virus was new for a lot of people and our immune system didn’t know how to fight it. Secondly, pathogens, like all living (including viruses in living here for the sake of argument) are subject to natural selection and evolution. As you stated, it benefits the pathogen to be more transmissible rather than deadly. A virus can change from more deadly to more transmissible but it doesn’t come without some “evolutionary cost”. Think of it like a video game where you have to spend tokens to customize your character (i.e. spend more tokens on strength or speed) I’m paraphrasing here, but I hope it makes sense

My 3 kids, husband and I all just had bird flu. We got tested and confirmed for it. It was HELL. It still is. It’s been 2 weeks and we still all feel just run through. It made it impossible to get out of bed for days, we all struggled so bad, I couldn’t believe how awful this has been. We have 12 hamsters so I was terrified they’d catch it too and we’d just circle it around our house over and over. We avoided their cages and super cleaned our hands before feeding. I learned my lesson with COVID. With all of the previous scares we had with SARS and swine flu, I remember talking to someone in March 2020 and I just brushed it off and said it was probably only a few hundred people out of millions. That's when I was told it was 80,000 and rising. That was the moment I realized COVID was something different. The world shut down less than a month later. And COVID "only" has a mortality rate of 1.5% AT MOST. It's just because literally like 1 in 10 people worldwide got it that it was so deadly. Remember the daily death toll counters?

I fear this has been a real concern and not overreacting for much longer than 5 months been one 20+ years of this being a possible pandemic. We usually just didn’t pay attention to it outside of people in epidemiology or medicine because the previous H5N1 outbreaks happened in places most Americans can’t find on a map. Now that it’s hit our shores don’t really have a choice.

The problem with all of this is everyone starts talking about something, a few people do panic, we take sensible precautions, a few people do overreact, then BECAUSE of the precautions nothing happens. And a certain amount of people go, "Look at all that talk and precautions and nothing happened!" and manage to somehow conclude, "We never needed to do anything! Then or ever!". "There was an ice storm this afternoon so I took it really easy home and then stayed home yesterday while it melted. I didn't die in a crash! It took four times as long to get home! And what a ridiculous waste of a day. Next time I'm driving home twice as fast and not only going to work but drive-thru for lunch."

BUT being sick at work with a fever and not taking the proper precautions such as wearing a mask or at LEAST washing his hands is the issue. He refused to wash his hands and coughed out into the open air or into his hand. He even coughed into his hand then offered that same hand immediately to someone for a high five. How do you know it was bird flu? Why would you get bird flu and not the farmer? I guarantee the farmer there has a lot more frequent and close contact with actual bird feces, birds, and other pathogenic material. Unless you were rolling around in chicken shit. Don't just say you had bird flu because you self diagnosed like a 16 year old claiming they're OCD because they have to tie their shoes a certain way. Or bipolar because they're a little moody. You don't get flu from rolling around in grass. Grass is incompatible with all strains of influenza.

The US specifically has had such drawback of regulations that it is not even paying attention to what state these diseases are at. Clinics and hospitals do not test for these diseases unless someone is dying. If you go to the doctor with symptoms they tell you it's "the flu" and they don't determine the strain or any map of infection. If this disease takes off, it's not going to be discovered in the US. The huge increase in cases are probably just because of an increase in testing after the pandemic. It's not a coincidence that the US suffered the most cases of Covid-19, because we do. not. test. In the minds of the people supposedly in control of keeping track of this, if you don't test, there are no results so there is no problem. We are not prepared for disaster, be it pandemic, fires, floods, hurricanes, or any other mass fatality events here. And it's about to get worse.

@@Rekles What’s so crazy about not being/not wanting others to be unhygienic in public? I mean, besides vaccines and masks which are more controversial and dependent on the person, both the original comment and my reply are something most adults can agree on lol. Would you not prefer to be around people who have the basic decency to cover their sneeze/cough or wash their hands in a public restroom? Kids are still learning so that’s understandable, but grown adults being unhygienic and ill mannered in public is lazy and irresponsible. I was under the impression that this was pretty universally agreed upon.

I hope not. Every flu pandemic has likely originated from Avian-Human flu reassortment. While I do worry about natural mutations history for flu pandemics shows that the biggest danger for flu pandemics erupting is from reassortment with human flu strains. It’s a rare occurrence but with how much H5N1 is in animals these days and Seasonal human flu strains picking up in the colder months there’s always the opportunity even if small. All it takes is one unlucky person or animal.

Re “What we can do” - - This is often overlooked, but nutrition helps with immunity. Adopting a whole food plant based way of eating that is high in cruciferous vegetables (especially raw) will boost immunity. Another benefit of more and more people adopting a WFPB diet is reducing the demand of billions of farmed animals. Less farmed animals unnaturally packed together means less bird flu and other potential diseases. 🌱
