@@carolynfiesthumel4586 Hi Carolyn! I'm sorry for your loss! I imagine how much your loyal companion must be missed. I went through this recently too. Have you ever considered adoption? There are people who rescue Chihuhuas and take care of them until they find a good home for them. Maybe this would be a good option for you. That's how I got mine. This saved me the puppy phase which requires a lot of training! Either way, the company of a four-legged friend always warms our hearts! I hope you feel better and God comforts your heart for your loss. Count on our friendship!

I have a huge bond with my Chi, I'm besotted with her. The problem with Chi's is that they tend to be naturally nervous as pups. If you expose & socialise them to as much stuff you can in a safe way, from travel, to other people, animals (dogs especially, all sizes), sounds smells etc from a young age. (Not baby them), they need to have a degree if independence from you to work things out for themselves. They grow up to be awesome, confident yet laid back & fun. You can baby them then if you want, because they've done the learning about being a dog in our world & not be afraid of new people & experiences. They will tend to be cautious around bigger dogs (they are tiny at the end of the day), so its got to be a positive experience. Another thing is an over protective parent. Obviously it's only natural to be over protective of your tiny fur ball, but at the same time you have to remember to ensure you don't pass on your fears to your dog - they sense everything. As tiny pups, and ones not had their shots yet, take them around with you in a pet carrier or doggy pram to initialise socialising them with the world. It will do them a whole load of good. They will feel safe & secure, yet able to take it all in without you physically carrying them in you've arms, this gives them that little independence from you too. But they are "safe". My Chi is so laid back! Give them Lots of love, lots of encouragement. & also training to sit/stay etc & to do tricks etc, is not just about cute, its about strengthening your bond, building their character & their confidence in you too, as well as some very useful commands when needed. I really have the best from my dog & if you get them excited when they perform well & are patient and kind with training (remembering Chi's are naturally nervous), you will lessen that fear, you will lessen later potential health problems caused by anxiety and your dog will grow up happy, healthy & content. They will start off as nervous in unknown situations & as long as they are perfectly safe they will learn not to be afraid of stuff. Like I say lots of encouagement, lots of handling by different people & going to different places and experiencing life. Another few tips if you want your Chi to share your bed with you. Teach them to learn to sleep in another room to you for the first few months, not lest you might squash them, but it teaches them to accept sleeping away from you. We can't always be with our dogs 24/7. The other is Not always to take them out with you when they are young for short periods. For them to understand you go out & come back. It will reduce enormous worry of seperation anxiety knowing you'll be back again. That's why I feel it important not to baby your dog & make it feel utterly depend on you for its emotional well-being. There are tons of books & training advice out there. You can have an amazing relationship with your Chi, if you start as you mean to go on, by not babying them to the point they depend on you for their total emotional well-being. It won't help you & it definitely won't help them. & it will deepen your respect & bond with them & vice-versa. Remember they aren't Humans, they are dogs & we totally love them for it!!

My chi is my first little dog. Her name is Diamond K, and she is a devia.
@LilBugs804 ай бұрын
@barkstreetwear Yes, it is. Most dogs, when they are aggressive is out of fear of something, losing food, being hurt by another dog etc. That's why it is so important for their experiences to be positive. My Chi started off a bit on the nervous side as did her Sister. My Chi had lots of social exposure in a safe way. Her Sister who someonelse owns, had mostly positive experiences, but she is less confident and is equally a lovely dog, but she is unsure of herself. She's not confident of her owners ability to protect her, she's not aggressive, but nervous. I myself had another Chi, she was 9 months old when she arrived, she was skinny, hair missing on her tail & far too thin for a puppy, and she shook & shook. I should have walked away! But I felt that I could turn this little girl around & my other Chi could brush off some of her calmness to her. It wasn't easy and a year later, she is far more confident, she doesn't shake anymore, she is much more confident around different people including men. One thing with her was if she heard a young male voice she would drop down to the ground & shake (make of that what you will & yes you are probably thinking the same thing). She loves to be cuddled in your arms, She's loving & affectionate, only thing with her now is she is hand shy & still doesn't like being picked up. The lady that had her had a young boy of about 6 or 7 who may have handled her a bit roughly, which is why Chi's are best off with no kids or older kids. They aren't intentionally causing the dog trauma but it does & it can last throughout that dogs life. The young months in any dogs life are crucial to their later mental wellbeing. Just like any youngster (including Humans). Like I say it is important to "think" ahead about the dogs upbringing, just like children. That includes over mothering them & allowing them to figure things out in a safe way. Over protection of carrying them everywhere (no matter how cute & tiny they are), can make any dog possessive of their owners & agression towards anyone who goes to close. They are lovely, lovely dogs. The secret to owning any dog is to treat them like a dog. I never get a puppy without visualising it as an adult & considering how I can help that pup into a happy, healthy friendly & confident dog. Enjoy their puppyhood, but you want to consider their future & used to as many things as possible in a safe positive way, allow them a degree of safe independence (ie not carry them everywhere if you need to use a carrier. Holding them makes them think that there is something to be afraid of & I have this person wrapped around my finger! Keep treats mainly to training. The odd freebee doesn't hurt! Train them Like any other dog. Not just for fun, but it instills confidence in you, that you're fun, that they want to please you & find out what they can do! They are truly, funny, eccentric- sometimes stubborn and amazing little doggletts! X

Any advice on a rescue chihuahua, he's about 2-3 years and I believe he was never properly socialized as he was only used for breeding, he was rescued together with his pups as a cruelty case, I don't have more details and neither does the shelter, only that he was kept outside and used for breeding. He barks at people and dogs when we're out walking. I've bought a carrier to take him out as much as I can so he see alot more of the outside world .. any tips would be much appreciated, when he is with us he is very affectionate and funny little character 😂

My chihuahua is two years, and she was brought to my door a month ago. She is such a sweetheart. I can’t imagine the owner giving her up. My only problem is getting her to use the pad every time. She will use it sometimes, and then go in the area, but not on the pad. She doesn’t really want to go outside. She likes to go out on the porch, sniff around, and then right back inside. I love her already. She is a Merle.

I have recently rescued my chihuahua Maddy. She is so attached to me in just the matter of a few months. Our bond grows stronger everyday. I’ve had a few dogs over the years but this little doll is the most affectionate dog I’ve ever had. And very well behaved with very little to no training she ever got from her past owners. One thing that I’m curious about is the shaking, at first I thought that she had been yelled at a lot or possibly beaten but now I think it’s just her breed because she does it even when I’m cuddling with her sometimes and when it’s quiet in the evenings. All and all though I am so happy with her and would recommend a dog like her to anyone who wants a lovable, smart, and loyal dog.

My husband and I work with a rescue we have fostered 11 litters. 🥰 Our last litter was momma and 6 puppies. All were adopted by wonderful families. The momma of the family was adopted but the family felt momma wasn't a good fit for their family. See momma has a way she shows her happiness. She smiles! Which some people see her smile as aggression. It isn't. She just smiles and shows her teeth. The family didn't understand so she came back to us. We find her smile adorable and decided to adopt her ourselves. She does have some issues from living on the streets of Tijuana but nothing we find too difficult an issue to work on. She's doing great and is a little ball of energy and keeps our pack entertained and busy by stealing toys so her brother and sister have to chase her. She's a keeper♥️

What a beautiful action you did and what a shame that the previous owners didn't understand what a jewel it is to have this breed. Ours are also adopted and they are mother and daughter. We feel sorry to separate them and that was the right choice, they have an incredible bond and of course they also have some inappropriate behavior but we even think it's funny, it's part of their personality of them being territorialist.🥰

He's intelligent and protective. Chiquita is my little female (spayed). I live in a tiny apartment so I didn't want to put my pups thru having beautiful, precious babies and then not be able to keep them. That would break 💔 their hearts and mine. Chiquita is a gorgeous blonde girl with big brown eyes and a pink nose. She's a long haired girl who looks fabulous after her bath and grooming. Pepe is brown and white, and also a long haired little guy with big brown eyes. After their baths and grooming they both look like grand champion 🏆 s posing for their photo shoot! I'm so happy and grateful for their good health, and companionship. Pepe the wonder 🐶🐕 dog, and Chiquita my princess are my little therapy dogs, my family. I pray that they live long. Thank you 💟😌💖🥰.

My Dog now is a Apple/Deer head mix Chi rescued from a dog fighting ring. He is so cute with the round head, bigger ears and a shorter than normal Deer Head snout. He is bigger than a pure Apple head at 8#'s. He was used to excite the poor trapped fighters by being swung over the fighting pit, roped and terrified. Whenever I think I can't despise dog fighting people any more they prove me wrong. Chihuahuas were not included in the Dogs I have adopted in the past but now there seems to be thousands of these little Dogs abandoned or abused. I could not resist this poor little Chi - missing teeth, stiff walk/ joint damage, a hundred fears, shaking and tremors, an attitude that said, "Just Don't" and a "wart" I wanted removed from his prepuce on his original Vet visit after adoption. He was only 5 years old. But the original Vet said better to leave the wart alone but 2 years later a new Vet diagnosed it as an aggressive cancer. Poor boy but so brave. The abuse he suffered has made him both terrified and terrifying. Children? His attitude is "Stay in your own yard!" Walk on his road? No way, No how! A Dog in sight? Attack first! Knock on his door? He actually squeezed past my blocking him the second day he was home with me and he chased off the Pizza guy after I paid for the pizza the guy was still carrying! We are talking about a 8# little rugrat! I had to meet the guy on the next block to get the pizza, but come alone he said. What show does this kid watch? My Chi has never bitten anyone - not enough teeth! He is only unleashed in our home or on our porch or drive. He stays on the porch unless we practice his training on the drive. But neighbors have told me they thought he was a Pitty when they heard him barking in our home - before they saw him. He's a loud barker, of course. He is not supposed to be living. We are almost 2 1/2 years past his "death sentence" and the cancer has just started growing again. His life is full of whatever he wants, except food choices. I fix his meals with healthy, organic, non GMO meat, veggies and fruit. I use dog safe and beneficial herbs, The Missing Link supplement, Dr Marty's Organ or Primal chicken mixed in with chicken breast cooked in bone broth or Chicken Liver or steak on special days, veggies, minced apple or blueberries with Salmon or sardines on the side. He loves watermelon as a treat. No processed foods, except a bit of cream cheese to take a baby aspirin. I really think the diet and just gentle minimum training and removing, stopping, or easing anything that stresses him is key to his fighting this aggressive cancer. I use Bach Rescue Remedy for thunderstorms or when he is nervous about something. Maybe GOD is just making up for the first 5 years he suffered. I spoil him. It must be so because everyone tells me I do. Yet he is so obedient and easy to love, except when in protective mode. He never bites he just makes weird faces and scary barking. But his eyes show fear. One spirited 4 year old who managed to evade me, picked him up and nose to nose told him she was his friend so get over it. She was his only favorite kid till she moved. He still watches for her. His beloved Godparents just retired and moved a few hours away. He is really missing them. And the cancer started growing again two days after they said Goodbye and moved. It makes me wonder. Dogs are more knowing than are given credit. Maybe his fight is aided by how accepting I am of his quirks and issues - maybe being spoiled with love helps him. I adore him as is. Feisty, Quirky, Grouchy, Overly Sensitive, Very Affectionate 24/7 for back massages, belly rubs, little apple head massages especially thumbs to the front of both ears, just always Adorable and a bit much Sneaky. What's mine is his and what's his is his. Always sleeps pressed against my leg. He didn't know grass or toys or blankies and comfortable beds 5 years ago. He wouldn't even eat meat. It seemed he lived on pizza crust and I didn't have that until his second day with me. I was ready to get him an IV. But finally by holding him like a baby and taking a piece of my food hand-feeding him he started to eat, as long as I held him. He seemed afraid of food at first-except pizza crust. I refuse to have any pizza now except what I make. What did he suffer from cruel demon people? He has finally got his perfect home to his satisfaction. Everything he sees is his. Totally different than I have trained and treated any other of the Dogs I have adopted and loved. There were always a few boundries of mine and yours, except with my last two, my sweet Puggy girl and now with my little Chi. Getting older relaxes your standard rules, I think. Dogs are worthy sentient beings who serve humans in many life enriching ways as family members as well as protection, therapy and working Dogs. Just love and care for them and their needs their whole life making sure to have loving Godparents and insurance for their care in case they outlive you. That's all there is to it. It is so rewarding because you just can't "outlove" a Dog. They are masters of Unconditional Love after all.

My boy loved to play YOU CAN’T GET ME. he had 3 variations of this game. He would challenge me to get him. If I went nears him he would jump out the way and run. Another variation to this game would be on the bed. if I reached out for him he would jump back out of the way. one time he was too close to the edge of the bed. when he jumped he went over and was holding on with his paws. i was laughing so hard i couldn't pull him up as he was out of my reach. he had a look on his face as if to say he was going to die for sure, my poor boy. he finally let go and dropped to the floor. he ran under the bed and did come back out. he wanted nothing to do with me. i told him, hey, i'm not the one that pushed you.😅 the third variation he would run under the bed and stick his head out the oposite side and look at me. when i went to his side he would run under the bed and stick his head out the other side and if i went for him under the bed he would go again.

I have 2 Chihuahuas. 1 Deer head, and 1 Apple. The Apple Selina, is my personal dog. She loves her dad and is rarely far from me. She hates walks, but will play all day, and chew her bones. (need to buy stock in the bone company) The deer head is my wife's dog. Loves walking, and is very nosey, she is our streets dog gossip queen. The play together, but when it comes to settling down, they go to their person. Both are short hairs.

I got a chihuahua from a lady who works at the hospital I work at. She was looking to find their chihuahua a good home, and I wanted to find a friend for my 95lbs female bully. I found out that her husband would beat the chi anytime it marked inside the house. So when I got him, he was very fesr aggressive, especially towards men. He was the hardest dog I ever had. He bit me many times, and even bit my face, but I was not going to give up on him. Just a couple months of properly training the dog, and just providing him love and stability, my little boy has turned a 180. I could never put my face close to him, or risked him biting me. Now I give him kisses, he is good around kids, and he is properly house broken. Oh, and my bully and him are best friends. They are tiny, but do require a ton of patience. Please, if you have a chihuahua, and its frustrating you that they pee on your stuff, please dont give up on them. If you truly love them, with enough patinece and time, youll have a wonderful and hilarious companion.

I have a deer head long-haired chihuahua. Buster is tan/white/black with mottled markings on paws and muzzle. He is a very chill chi but sure likes his car rides. He is my medalert service dog. His obedience training was over a year. With AKC coc ribbons and will rally trial in near future. He tends to gain weight easily so I have to watch closely. He is a big chi at 11 pounds. He does FastCAT but chooses when he will run😂. So it is taking longer for titles than his sister that loves to run. He has been a great ambassador for his breed. Several people have been amazed a chi could be so well trained. But I will say, if you don't keep up the socializing, chis will easily backside to being barky.

When anything is near the house they have extremely good hearing. I always say Mike is here and mouse fart. Very loving but it will pick their own owner. My mail since like most anyone, but always comes back to me. My female only likes me and my father.. So make sure that you spend time with them early off because they will end up picking one person over the other but they will like everyone in the house. But they were all just like one more than the other.

I have two chis; my little male is 12 years old with CHF (6 lbs.), and my female is almost 3 (17 lbs.). I got her when she was about 5 weeks old. Both of them are very stubborn and jealous of each other. I've tried petting and loving them both, but my female is REALLY jealous and territorial. This evening I was holding her when my male came and jumped up on my leg. She began growling and I tapped her on the nose and told her no. She then turned very aggressive and bit me on the mouth hard, bringing a lot of bleeding. I then swatted her, placed her on the sofa and told her to stay there. After feeding them, I placed her in her crate. I've heard other trainers advise against giving them too much freedom. She will attack my male if she sees another dog, if he comes into the room while she's eating, and now, she bit me when my male got too close. Her normal demeanor is otherwise delightful. She likes to play catch and is very snuggly. What can I do differently? I'm sure it must be something I'm doing wrong. I've had several chis over my lifetime, and I've never encountered a problem like this. Thank you

I recently rescued a 6 year old chi-terrier mix. She was never leash trained and she barks at everything. I have tried to get her to walk with me on a leash but she just tears around zig zagging and I’m afraid she’ll make me trip….(I’m 80 years old). She has serious chronic bladder issues and makes struvite stones. Any suggestions from experienced owners?
@danahenley1418 Жыл бұрын
Idk about the issue with the stones, but you could pad train her so she can relieve herself whenever she has the need to go...🤷🏻♀️
@barkstreetwear Жыл бұрын
Hi Patricia! I had the same problem with mine! Don't use a neck collar, use a harness, it's safer to start training. However, if there is a risk of you tripping, perhaps the best option is for a dog trainer or have a dog walker. If you still want to training by yourself I suggest starting slowly and using treats as a reward. For example, if she is a certain distance away from a dog and doesn't bark, you give her a treat. And as slowly she approaches the other dog and rewards her. If she barks, you take a step back and wait again until she stops barking. This way she will understand that this behavior is wrong and that when she doesn't do it, she will be rewarded. The same thing for walking, if she try to pull you, you stay at the same place until she calm down and then you start walking again. At first you will stop every two steps but with practice she will improve. But don't put your health at risk! I hope it helped you! Regarding the bladder problem, unfortunately I don't know what to answer.. In this case, it is better to have veterinary advice.

My advice for Chihuahua and other small breed dog owners is to litter train your pet, as opposed to training them to go outside. As it is very easy and much faster to litter train your pet. Other advantages to litter training your pet is your pet never needs to go outside. Thus, there is no need to give your pet poisonous flea and tick products or heart worm medication. You also don't have to worry about your small pet being attacked by a larger and more powerful animal. You don't have to worry about leaving your pet alone for extended periods of time. You won't have to worry about setting aside the time it takes to take your pet outside to eliminate. Lastly, you won't have to worry about the weather. If it is snowing, sleeting, raining, too cold, or it being too hot. All of those concerns are eliminated when you litter train your Chihuahua or small breed dog. Moreover, I recommend the litter material be pine pellets which you can purchase at Tractor Supply Company for $7.50 per forty pound bag including tax. As you will use about three bags a year. Why pine pellets? Because it eliminates virtually all odors and I recommend flushing all solids down the toilet as soon as you see them. I constructed a litter box from a 24 x 18 inch plastic container with 15 in high sides that I purchased from Walmart for about $13 dollars and some change. I then cut out an opening on one side of the container big enough so my Chihuahua can enter and egress it easily at will. Then once I did that, I added a one inch layer of pine pellets to the floor of my new litter box. Next, I pushed the opening side of the new litter box to the opening side of the 24 x 18 dog crate I also purchased and budded them together. In the doggy crate I put a pet bed, blanket, some toys, and a dog water bowl and a food bowl. The idea was my pet would live, sleep, and play in his new doggy crate and then eliminate in the litter box. You know what, it worked perfectly. As in a matter of three weeks, my Chihuahua puppy completely trained herself to always use a litter box to eliminate. Oh yeah, I also purchased a sifting litter box that I use strictly for cleaning my doggy litter box in which I do every seven days .When pine pellets are urinated on, they disintegrate into saw dust. Thus, once a week I poor the contents of my doggy litter box into the sifter and then sift the sawdust that was generated into the litter box below the sifter. When all that remains in the sifter are only pine pellets, I then empty those still good pine pellets back into my doggy litter box and add a couple of scoops of fresh pine pellets to replenish the used pine pellets. Lastly, I dispose of the sawdust in the trash, as it is odor free.

It sounds like your dog never interacts with you or other dogs, but knows how to eliminate in a crate. I took my Chi. everywhere with me and socialized him alot We had so much fun and he was happy. He passed amonth ago at age 13. To have your dog never go outside, lay in the sunlight,play with others to me is terrible. Why have a dog??
@bullfrog5037 Жыл бұрын
@@sandyboyd9436 I don't know how you reached your idiotic assumption, but the first three weeks I took the new puppy home, most of the time, I kept her in a doggy crate attached to a litter box on the other end. So most of the time for the first three weeks she would eat, sleep, and play in the doggy crate and eliminate in the litter box. As puppy's instinctively know not to soil their living area, provided you don't buy a doggy crate too large for your breed of dog. Not to mention that her doggy crate is her refuge and her safe place. As she loves her doggy crate. However, at the same time, during that three week period, often times after I witnessed her recently eliminating in her litter box, I would take her out of her doggy crate for bonding time and play time.. After three weeks of maintaining that regimen, I slid the litter box about a foot away from the doggy crate permitting her full freedom. I then closely monitored her for several days to make sure she was still eliminating in the litter box as she is supposed to and luckily for me she was. As this was the first dog I have owned that actually potty trained herself. As previously I trained dogs to go potty outside and it always took several months to do it. However, back then I had a back yard with a privacy fence around it, a patio, and a swimming pool. However, I sold that place a couple of years ago after my wife died and I now live in an upstairs apartment. Meanwhile, over the course of several days, I slowly slid her litter box to its predetermined permanent location, where it remains today. In fact, this was the first puppy I ever potty trained that never eliminated not even one time on my floor. How many people can say that? Meanwhile, in stark contrast to your idiotic assumption, my puppy, now dog, was exposed, socialized, and assimilated to all my family members and many friends and unlike a lot of Chihuahua's, she does not growl or ever try to bite people. As she is very well behaved and always sweet. In fact, she has a perfect temperament. Not only that, but I've taught her to sit, to lay down, to roll over, to stand, to speak, and to get in her crate on command. In fact, I also trained all my previous dogs to do the same thing as well. The only thing that is different this time around is she always stays inside my upstairs apartment. However, I'm not a hermit and I'm always entertaining friends and family members on a daily basis and as a result, she is always exposed to a lot of people daily.. However, I don't take her anywhere with me other than to the Vet because I don't want to have to use flea, tick, and heart worm solutions because those things employ harsh chemicals that are very harmful in the long-run to the health of your pet. I take that back, when I go visit my children out of town, I'll take her and her litter box with me. Meanwhile, most Chihuahua's easily live beyond 13 years of age. So I have to assume that all those harsh chemicals you employed to stop fleas, ticks, and heart worms obviously shortened the life of your Chihuahua by several years, as I've never heard of a Chihuahua dying so young. Congratulations, you are the first. Finally, of course, I scoop up the solids and flush them down the toilet as soon as I see them and the other thing is I clean out her litter box and doggy crate once a week, which takes me about ten minutes for me to do because I also vacuum the inside of her doggy crate and her bedding and the surrounding area. Nonetheless, employing a litter box, sure beats having to maintain a set schedule along with the time involved to let her out, strapping her harness on and putting her on a leash, taking the elevator down stairs so she can go eliminate, scooping her waste up to put in bags for disposal, and then having to put up with the weather on top of all of that. As litter training your Chihuahua or other small pet, which in my case took only three weeks, is a far easier solution to the other alternatives.

@Bullfrog thank you for sharing, pine pellets beat buying pee pads, I’m definitely going to try that. Also, how did you get your Chi to speak? I’ve been trying to get mine to howl but she only speaks like that when my 5yr old won’t leave her alone lol.
@bullfrog5037 Жыл бұрын
@@SharleyPaul Teaching a dog to speak on command is hard and takes a lot of patience and time. First, you must always have treats on hand and then second you have to do something that gets your dog to bark, like grabbing their favorite toy and then getting him or her really excited enough to bark and when they do, you mark it with the speak command and reward them with a treat. Then you must repeat the process over and over again ad nauseam until they learn to speak on your command. Teaching your dog to speak on command takes a long time and requires a ton of consistency and patience on your part. Good luck.

@barkstreetwear Жыл бұрын
Hi Linda, I had the same problem with a pinscher. This is a common problem, but you should avoid it so it doesn't become a habit. Maybe putting her in the kennel is not a good option in this case. Try to channel her energy into toys, show her that she can use toys to bite (let her destroy the toy, that's healthy). And be clear by saying NO when she tries to bite you, but not in an irritated way as this can trigger bad behavior as they are very sentimental. This phase is more common when they are changing their teeth but it can happen when they are very excited too. With patience and understanding she will understand and you will have an excellent companion, don't give up, training takes time but it increases your bond of love and loyalty. I hope it helped. Keep us updated, please. Love, BSW.

This is caused by their fear. Imagine you being a tiny person next to dinosaurs, scary right? that's how they feel at the vet. And that depends on the raising too, but I can guarantee you one thing, with their owners they are the most loving creatures you can imagine!

I've worked closely with many veterinarians. I was allowed to inject Euthanol. The 1 beast that came in ultimately required 3 60ml syringes injected directly into its heart by the vet to FINALLY put it down. It snapped and barked the whole time. It's owner couldn't take it any more and requested a humane euthanasia. I hate the little brutes and wouldn't own one if it were abandoned. The older they get, the worse they are.
