I really enjoyed Passengers, and am eagerly waiting for Stella. I was introduced to McCarthy with The Road, but his Border trilogy is my favorite work of literature ever.

I enjoyed that very concise and well phrased summary of McCarthy’s back catalogue there. I thought you perfectly summarised what a McCarthy Curious reader needs to know if they’re considering entering his dark, yet addictive world. Yes, I’m a huge fan of McCarthy’s and utterly thrilled that he has these two (count them! TWO!) novels coming out in such close proximity. I’m told that one or possibly both of these books delves into the confusing world of quantum sciences, which I am a lay enthusiast of, so I’m genuinely excited for these books in a way that I don’t think I have ever been before about an anticipated new novel. He’s certainly the best American novelist I can name (in my personal view) closely rivalled by Edith Wharton, Raymond Chandler and Ursula K Le Guin (and yes, I have read Twain, Hemingway, Steinbeck and F Scott Fitzgerald, etc.) with that ability to encapsulate Americana and tread a thin line between poetry and prose, philosophy and art. I’m dyslexic, so I will be listening to the audiobooks, mostly whilst walking my dog, or doing chores around the house. But if past experience is anything to go by, I’ll also be spending a lot of time just standing there, attracting quizzical stares, as I gaze into the middle distance, pondering the vivid images in my mind’s eye, put there by a man who has trained his imagination to misbehave; to paraphrase Stephen King. I just cannot wait.

I am a massive fan and have read all his book and looking forward to receiving my copy of the passenger on Friday, you have done a great job in the video to get someone who's thinking about plunging into these magical works... lucky them.. great job.

Thanks. Big CM fan here. I'm reading The Passenger now and need to pre-order the followup book soon. I've never read the early work but have read all the novels from Suttree on.

I just picked up The Passenger today. I'm very excited to read it. Blood Meridan was my first introduction, and though I read All the Pretty Horses, it wasn't until The Road that I came to appreciate Cormac McCarthy. I've since reread the others and also read No Country for Old Men. I now very much like his books.

Talk about a baptism of fire! Of all the books to start with, that one must have blown back your hair. The most shocking thing about that novel for me didn’t come until years after I’d read it, when I discovered (almost by chance) that the only truly fictional character in the book was the protagonist, the kid. Almost everything Judge Holden is accused of in the novel is based on fact! From his name to his child murdering ways! It drew me back to a second reading of Blood Meridian, with very different eyes.

Blood Meridian is still my favorite book. Apparently the kid comes back in his new book.
@thetheatrezoo36032 жыл бұрын
@@purefoldnz3070 yes, the Kid is Alice's lead hallucination. He has flippers for hands, which I think must be a deformity due to her father's work. Not sure yet how much he really shares with the character from Blood Meridian.

I have had the border trilogy sitting on my shelf forever waiting to be read. Thank you for inspiring me to finally pick it up! I am intrigued by the synopsis of the new releases…

You are in for a treat. They are highly, “masculine,” novels, with a lot of subtext addressing what it means to be a man. But they are also artefacts of great beauty, with such memorable prose and sensitivity, despite their frequently bleak outlook. I hope you enjoy them.

Recommend getting on line and finding the translations for McCarthy's passages written in Spanish. I don't know why he did this, but he did. But folks have translated just those passages. I really loved the border trilogy.

I enjoyed the Passenger. His most introspective novel. Really autobiographical in its own way. Huge McCarthy fanatic here.

I have the box set coming for his newest next week. I personally don't care much for his obsessively barren dialogue punctuation. BUT His prose is nearly without peer. You have to slow down and absorb his nuance. It's lyrical ... beautiful.

I came in at Suttree and have since read everything at least once. The man has no equal, for my money. I’ve just finished The Passenger, which, while not his best is still pretty freaking good. I wonder if anyone else picked up on some similarities between Bobby Western and Suttree (one of the most indelible characters in modern fiction, imnsho).
@thundercheeks19892 жыл бұрын
Well said. Suttree is my favorite of his. I loved the Passenger, found it a joy to read and began it again as soon as I finished it. I cant believe i didnt see the similarities between Bobby and Cornelius, but youre so right! Now i gotta read it again!

I was thinking when she said that, that McCarthy’s writing is far more graphic and violent than anything that’s ever been depicted on the screen. If she can stomach his descriptions I should imagine the movie would be fairly easy to take by comparison. It feels like a shame because it’s such a good movie and such a faithful adaptation of the novel; a rare thing in Hollywood. And the performances are so masterful. She’s really missing out.
@DThron2 жыл бұрын
Totally agreed! I hope she gets to check it out; it's so rare to have an adaptation that's as much of a masterpiece in its own own right.

What I learned from this video is that the American versions of Cormac McCarthy books are butt ugly, and the UK version are quite nice looking. Normally I wouldn't care, but McCarthy is one of my favorite authors and his books are always on prominent display in my home. The UK box set is gorgeous and I already put it on my Christmas list. Now begins the hunt to replace my other hideous American versions with nice looking UK editions. Helpful video, thank you!

Outer Dark is not a post apocalyptic novel. It's kind of misleading to say he mostly writes in the western and post apocalyptic genres since only The Road qualifies there

In spite of their flattering nature I'm not sure some of comments below are authored by true persons in the traditional sense. I'm hoping this one is. Since I've anticipated the publication of these novels like a promised eighth day of the week for well over a decade, you'll assume I've grabbed at every hint rumor lie and shadow one can without sacrificing their own physical and psychological welfare. Recent attempts have touched upon some let's say peculiar expressions and revelations not the least of which including literate folks pissing & moaning about how the Passenger and Stella Maris are lacking in some kind of plot structure. Buddha on butter n' bread what's wrong with these people? Have they read any of the works mentioned in your video? Did they infer some definite catalyst for the world's end in the Road? Do they know John Grady Cole didn't fund a scholarship in Abuelita's name? Are the upset every time they frequent a soup kitchen and Cornelius Suttree isn't passing out cookies and Abercrombie & Fitch paraphernalia to the homeless? Fuckers must've had their brains scooped out at dress-rehearsal. Das ist immer so. Guten tag.
